2. Protagonist
The main protagonist in our film is Iby Wanas,
he is a relatively young adult in his twenties,
this is portrayed through the items of clothes
that he is wearing. Shown via Mise-En-Scene .
We understand that he has a troubled start in
life with the initial monologue played at the
start of the sequence, this identifies the
background and gives additional information
which the viewers need to know so that the
sequence makes sense. The types of clothes
he is wearing represents different things, for
example, his hoodie. This allows the
stereotype of a troubled young man with gang
affiliated issues to come into play. We also
used this character to illustrate and represent
our target audience who maybe can relate in
certain ways to this character. Also the fact
that we understand his wife has been
kidnapped and his child is in possible danger
allows us as the audience to route for this
character via empathy for these reasons and
the fact that he is trying to switch his troubled
life completely around.
Grey Hoodie – Stereotypes of ‘chavs’ and antisocial
behavior. Represents subconsciously who are aimed
target audience is, maybe people who can relate to
the troubles our protagonist is going through.
Urban area – Represents social class and
subcultures, for example gangs. Also matches our
genre convention which is a urban/thriller feel.
Cigarette – Portrays possible prior substance abuse
and how he handles stress. Also portrays disregard
for health which causes people to think why this may
be.
3. Antagonist
This is our sequences antagonist, as you may
be able to distinguish for yourself. He
represents a lower social group in society as his
job isn’t legal. We understand that he is
considered the ‘mule’ as he follows up on
orders which the ‘boss’ provides for him in the
car. The urban background gives of subliminal
information, for example… he is a part of a
minor subculture found in urban areas such as
shown above. We as the audience are aware
that the clothes Jordon’s wearing aren’t
matching his stereotypical social class, this
allows for the audience to receive an overall
ideology on how he makes his money,
predominately drug related.
Urban background - Shows the
background of both parties and allows
the audience to understand what sort of
urban background these characters
originated from.
Clothes - The colour of his clothes are
relatively dark, this was done purposely
as it connotates to being a trouble-
maker and a slight sense of evilness.
This was done for another reason, and
that reason being distinguishing the
difference between the protagonist and
antagonist.
Gun – finally, the gun portrays a variety
of different things, especially gang
culture, which is stereotypical of a
relatively young urban man. It also
represents the sort of life our antagonist
lives, and in a way it gives a flashback as
to how our protagonist used to behave.
4. Iby’s wife
This is the main protagonists wife and the only women shown throughout the sequence,
after the viewers have listened and watched the start of our opening sequence we realise
that she has been kidnapped by the gang her husband was associated with. As you can see
she is tied up, and is in obvious distress, the fact that she is tied up and is helpless portrays
the stereotype of women being vulnerable, this is also shown via the high angle shot,
again used to show her weakness and emphasize her vulnerability.
5. Overall
Overall my media product represents a few social groups, shown through the obvious
stereotypes portrayed from each individual character. Males from urban backgrounds
are represented in two ways from our opening sequence, the first way is young males
complying to gang affiliated culture, and using crime as a source of anger, almost as if
it wants to payback society for labeling them as failures before even being given a
chance. Hence why young males from ethnic/poor backgrounds are likely to conform
to gang culture. The second way young males are represented are through the fact
that he is trying to rehabilitate himself, despite the fact that he has had a rocky start to
life, it’s the fact of the manner that he is trying to do everything he can in order to
prevent the gang culture making another negative appearance in his life. Finally, the
woman, (protagonists wife) is represented in a number of different ways, mainly be
certified as the lesser sex, shown through it being a woman who was taken hostage
and tied up. The audience would get this reaction by the use of high angle shots
whenever we see the woman, almost as if she is being looked down upon.
