Media music magazine photos mary keren
1. I took these photos of my friend Mary in Birmingham city centre, the markets
and Digbeth. I wanted an area that was familiar to her, and was grimy and
urban. All indie artists start off playing local shows in underground venues, and
so the choice of a grim looking background fitted, without looking too hip-hop.
We didn’t have any instruments, so for an improvement I could get her to play
guitar in a shot, looking like she’s busking or playing an intimate gig.
2 of the images were taken outside music venues that Mary has played at, and I
can link this to my double page spread story. Modern indie artists are often in
pictures in similar scenes, so this photoshoot was fairly stereotypical of an indie
artist, with a more personal angle.
Her outfit is casual and practical, with her ‘mom style’ jeans giving her an indie
twist, and her green coat suggesting a Liam Gallagher influence. Her make up is
not too overpowering – she doesn’t look made up enough to be on the cover of
a pop magazine, and it’s not dark enough to be a heavier genre’s magazine
either.
I took these photos in a portrait frame so they would fit well into a whole page
of a magazine. I ensured she used direct address to engage with the reader. I
could use one of the top left pictures as my cover image – she’s positioned in
such a way that coverlines, masthead and dateline would fit in well. The lighting
is bright, one’s a medium close up, the other a mid shot. The 6th picture has
unique lighting, it would be unconventional for a cover image but may fit into a
double page spread, or contents page.
2. The first 2 pictures shows 2 girls
looking apathetic from a low angle
shot. The dark lighting adds to this
atmosphere. This is typical of an indie
band, and so would fit in with my
magazine.
I think this could look good on either
my contents page, or as a cover line's
accompanying picture on the cover
page. The mise en scene contrasts
the other pictures; it’s plain instead
of busy.
I’d edit the lighting and make it
brighter, less contrasting and add a
magenta tone to even out the
colouring.
I used Keren as my model, and I took photographs of her in the
music studio. This is a clear sign that my magazine is music based,
and by having used 4 female models by this point, it’s also clear
what the USP of my magazine is.
The pictures of Keren in the studio are stereotypical of an indie
musician, especially one who’s recording music which would make
for a relevant article.
Her dark red hair shows her individuality and personal style,
alternative/indie.
These could be good photographs for a double page spread
possibly, or perhaps on the contents page.
3. I took these photographs of Keren in
college, and the direct address, portrait
frame and pose would work well for a
cover image.
It’s fairly stereotypical of an indie
magazine, though could perhaps look
too posed.
I’d edit the background to even out the
shadowing. Her hair colour represents a
genre that promotes individuality and
subverting from the norm.
