The document outlines plans for a student's film and media production (FMP) project. The student proposes creating a comedy TV show trailer. They chose this project to build skills in video editing and learn new techniques. The intended audience is teenagers and adults aged 13-30. The trailer will have a funny, lighthearted tone and bright, colorful style to capture the mood of comedy shows like The Big Bang Theory. Key influences on the project include characters from shows like The Big Bang Theory and Fawlty Towers for their humor styles. The student provides a draft plot and mind map to develop their ideas further.
2. Pre-proposal
Tell me in no more than 30 words your initial thoughts about your
FMP? E.g. what would you like to do, etc…
My first thought was to make a video trailer, either for a drama
storyline, a new TV comedy or make a sequel to my music video, but
without music.
Why have you chosen this as your potential project? I chose to make a video which is a trailer for a new tv comedy
because I’m inspired by shows such as The Big Bang Theory and he
Young Sheldon.
Who is the project for? Think about the intended audience…basically,
what’s the point of it/what is it’s purpose?
The audience is teenagers and adults both male and female (13-
death). The purpose of it is to advertise a new TV show and to
entertain.
What about your project makes it personal and important to you? I want to be a film/video editor in the TV Industry and thought making
a video would help me learn new skills/build on the skills I have.
Describe the tone/mood/style of your potential product[s] [which
techniques/characteristics are you employing?]
Tone: I’m going to add a funny song and play it in the background.
This will keep the comedy flowing throughout the video.
Mood: The video will be funny/humourous.
Style: The video will look bright and colourful. It won’t be dark
because it will look like horror more than comedy.
Techniques: I will use close ups to show the characters
reactions/facial expressions. I will use distance shots to show any
slapstick (e.g someone falling over)
Why have you decided to work in this style/genre? Because it’s something I’m interested in and it will help me to build
on my skills and learn new skills for the future.
5. Mood Board Analysis
How does your mood board inspire your project?
The colour yellow repeats in the set images. Their light which shows most comedy shows use light colours rather than
dark. If they used dark colours, it would look more like horror than comedy.
I picked images of characters with big personalities and ones that people will recognise, to help me create my
characters for the trailer. They all have similar personalities. Sheldon (The Big Bang Theory) and Alan Harper (Two and a
Half Men) have similar personalities because they’re both stubborn and behave like children when they like to.
Whereas Baldrick (Blackadder) and Officer Crabtree (Allo Allo) are both dumb witted.
I picked images of DVD front covers because I want to create one for my video. This is something most comedies do
when they’re going to release a new series or DVD.
I found some images of comedy sets showing what equipment they use and what colours they use to make the set look
good. This will help me to decide how to make the set look and what equipment to use when filming. The sets and
locations are real places. They’ve not been drawn.
I found images of explosions to because I want to add a stunt/special effect towards the end of the trailer, making it
end on a cliff-hanger.
How will your mood board influence your final product?
• The images of characters from various shows will influence my final product because it will help me create the
characters and there personalities
• I used images of TV comedy sets to help me with how to make my set look.
• The still image shots will influence me to make a front cover with all the cast and the title.
6. Key Influences – Sheldon Cooper
• Sheldon Cooper is a big influence because he’s a character which most
people will recognise. The character is different to what is seen in other
comedies because he’s very stubborn and very set in his ways. Most of the
time his humour is unintentional (e.g Instead of you being my x men, you
will be my c men), but sometimes he understands and comes up with a
good punchline.
• The Big Bang Theory is broadcast on E4 and last up to 20 minutes (without
adverts) . With adverts it’s on for half an hour.
7. Key Influences Officer Crabtree from
Allo Allo
• Officer Crabtree is a big influence because he has an unintentional sense
of humour. He is a character which most adults will recognise. His famous
catchphrase is ‘good moaning’ which is ‘good morning’ in French
according to him. This leads to him using this kind of speak in every
sentence (e.g If you do not swotch it of it will get a flit bittery) meaning if
you do not switch it off it will get a flat battery.
• Allo Allo was broadcast on the BBC and lasted between 25-35 minutes. It’s
now repeated on Yesterday and is 5 minutes longer because of adverts.
8. Key Influences Mrs Brown
• Mrs Brown is a key influence for my video because she has a very good
sense of humour. She is a character which most young people will
recognise. She knows when she’s being funny and She’s very sarcastic. She
gets away with anything, but when a situation comes up with one of her
children (mostly the boys) she tries to help them out.
• Her most famous quote is ‘I used to say f*** off. Now I say That’s Nice’
• Mrs Brown’s Boys is broadcast on BBC 1 and is on for half an hour each
time. They made three full series, but now broadcast two episodes at
Christmas.
9. Key influences – Basil Fawlty
Basil Fawlty is a big influence because he’s one of the biggest characters in
comedy. He manages to get into bad situations, and make them worse than
what they are. He doesn’t care about what he says, and doesn’t care about
who it will affect (e.g in ‘The Germans’ episode). He also gets very paranoid
because he thinks other people are thinking he’s behaving odd, which makes
him ramble on about what he’s supposedly doing.
Fawlty Towers was broadcast on BBC 2 between 1975 and 1979. most
episodes were 25 minutes, but two episodes were 35 minutes. It’s repeated
on Yesterday (Freeview) and Gold (sky channel) which needs to be paid for.
10. Key Influence – Rimmer from red
dwarf
Rimmer is another key influence because he has
a sarcastic sense of humor.
11. Key influence – The Big Bang Theory
set
The Big Bang Theory set is a key influence to my
project because it’s bright and colourful with a
great colour scheme. This is roughly how I want
my sets to look. I don’t want them to be dark
because it might make people think it’s a horror
show instead of a comedy show.
12. Plot
Two friends are living together in an apartment. Ryan is working
on ben’s laptop. Suddenly, it cuts out, and Ryan panics. He rings
Lee (another friend) and asks him what he should do. The laptop
starts smoking and Ryan runs towards the lift with it. He puts it
in the lift and sends it to the ground floor. The apartment
building goes silent, then a loud bang happens. The lift explodes.
Will Ryan be ok? How will Ben react when he finds out what
happened?
Collection of images related to your product/inspirational/visually interesting
At least 15 needed. These should not just be just existing products. Anything and everything that inspires this project should be here.
Make the theme obvious – make it clear what you’re trying to get across
Use a combination of images sizes – or build around a larger central image
Incorporate text
Look beyond the internet – use books, your own photos, etc
Be a curator – create links between the content, the ‘thread’ will make it easier to understand
Make more than one! If you want to examine different themes or cover different aspects of the possible outcomes of your project, create multiple boards to convey you thoughts and intentions
Identify at least 3 key influences and discuss how and why they will influence your project.
