As you have seen, music, sound and lighting has a huge impact on horror movies and also adds the suspense and effect to horror and as technology has increased it betters the movie. If there was no sound ,the film wouldn't be frightening but can be gruesome. Which tells me that horror movies rely on the sound to make effects .
