This project will create a video advertisement and app mockups for a proposed Harry Potter augmented reality game set in York. The video will showcase the app's features like battling monsters and learning spells by scanning QR codes around York. Mockups of the app's design and gameplay will be created in Adobe XD, taking inspiration from the Harry Potter aesthetic. One actor will be filmed in locations around York linked to the franchise like the Shambles. The video will be edited in Premiere Pro to overlay monsters and add special effects. Color grading will give the video a darker tone to match the Harry Potter films.
3. RESEARCH
In my research I found that people who visit York like to enjoy
the scenery and visit shops. I need to make sure that the tour I
create caters to this by taking people around to the main sights
in York and advising them to go along the main roads and
streets that are very scenic. I also found that people who stay in
York only stay for an average of two nights. This means that
the activities in the tour need to be quick and compact so
people can get the most out of their stay and enjoy the game to
its fullest potential before leaving. This means making the
game tasks simple and enjoyable so that everyone can have a
good experience with it. I found that the age range that
commonly visit York are aged 45-55. This means that I will
need to make sure that the game I create makes their stay fun
and can engage with the demographic well as younger people
clearly donât feel as though there is much that interests them in
York.
4. RESEARCH
In my existing product research I looked into the past and
current popularity of the game PokĂŠmon Go. This game
has a very similar concept to my game so looking at
download statistics helped me see how popular the game
continues to be after its release in 2016. Whilst the
number of downloads have decreased over the years the
numbers stay consistent around 11 million downloads.
This shows that, whilst its popularity has decreased, it
has levelled out and has consistent success. It show that
this AR type of game has been popular and successful
which was risky because before this it wasnât a very
common game feature.
I also looked into how the Apps design maintains player
satisfaction and how the games aesthetics draw in new
people encouraging them to play the game. Easy to reach
buttons means that players won't get frustrated whilst
playing from having to reach to the top of the screen.
5. The game has made use of simple lettering and bright
colours so that the game is nice and calming to look at
making it fun and addictive to play. They have also made
sure to keep the game looking sleek by ensuring there
arenât too many buttons overcrowding the screen. This
shows the importance of making sure that the apps
design is aesthetically pleasing and simple so players
donât feel bombarded with information.
I also decided it was important to look into the Harry
Potter films success. Since the Harry Potter films came
out throughout the 2000s, People of the targeted age
group grew up with the films. I looked at a chart
that proved this as 79% of people aged under 30 had
seen the films. I also looked at the game Hogwarts
Mystery to see what made it successful. It reintroduced
familiar Harry Potter features and characters whilst
also introducing a new storyline to engage with fans.
This makes it a nostalgic experience whilst also giving
new story in the Harry Potter universe. I can make sure I
implement familiar features to engage with fans.
6. POTENTIAL APPROACHES
It is important for me to look into ways I can portray the
Apps features in a video. I would like to film a phone that
is using the camera and edit a monster on top to show
how the AR feature would look if you were playing the
game. For the video I could layer a still image of a
monster on top and show effects of somebody using
magic to destroy it. I could animate them to turn red
when they are being hit with a spell. I could then make an
additional concept on photoshop that would show the
app in more detail, showing what menus and other
screens are available.
7. POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES TO
USE
I will have to use lots of editing techniques to complete
the video to its best potential. I will need to use keying
filters to overlay videos on top of one another to create
the effect. I will also use garage band to create sound
effects which will be important for the game. I will also
have to do some animating on photoshop to design the
app and the AR features that I want to implement. I will
also alter the colour of the video shots to make it look
more gloomy and dark. I will make sure that it has cooler
tones by increasing the blue and decreasing the red
using the RGB scales. I will also learn to use Adobe aero
which is software that I am familiar with. This should
help me to create the AR for the app. I will also be using
adobe Aero to create the Augmented reality.

9. SUMMARY
This project will help me to practice my video making
and camera skills. I will also get the opportunity to learn
more challenging things in premiere pro. I will also have
to think about what music to use as this is an important
and recognisable part of the Harry Potter films so, I can
also practice making more sound effects and improving
my skills on garage band. It will also give me the
opportunity to practice my planning skills as this has
been a weakness in past tasks. I need to make sure that
my shot lists and storyboards are detailed so I know
exactly what I need to do when I start production. I can
also practice and improve my time management skills by
making sure I schedule enough time to complete
production tasks.
10. SUMMARY
One restriction for the project is the augmented reality. It
will be difficult for me to do show the AR characters in a
video project. In order for them to work and look good I
will need to animate them which is difficult and time
consuming. I also donât have a lot of practice with
animation so there is room for it to go wrong. It will also
be difficult to shows off all the features that I have
thought of in one video so I will have to plan it out
carefully. Another restriction is that I will need to learn to
use new and unfamiliar software to create the concepts
for the app that will go alongside the video. This means
that there will be room for error as things can be more
difficult and can take more time when your learning to
use new software since I will be using adobe XD and
Adobe Aero which I am unfamiliar with using.
11. FINAL IDEA â RATIONALE
I decided to do this idea because Harry Potter has a lot of
connections with York. There are a few places that are
linked to the franchise for example the train Station and
the Shambles which was the inspiration behind Diagon
Alley. I want to do it in video format because that is the
area I want more practise in. I already have skills in
premiere pro and feel confident using the software. I will
also be able to further improve my planning and time
management skills. Its important to manage my time
carefully so that I can complete the project in time.
Why this idea? Why this format? What skills do you have
that support this and what are you looking forward to
exploring more.
12. FINAL IDEA â CREATIVE
CONCEPT
I want to create a video that advertises the Harry Potter
AR game. It will take players around to different places in
York by encouraging people to learn spells and attack
monsters that are over York. The style of the app with
take inspiration from harry potter by using colours like
blues, grays gold and brown. I will also make use of the
house colours like red, yellow, blue and green. I will also
make sure that It is stylized like Harry Potter by using the
recognizable fonts from the films. I will also design
loading symbols and buttons that use the known Harry
Potter icons like the lightning bolt or wands.
What do you want to make, reference the look, style and
type of project. This could be a synopsis of the piece and
some visual reference points. Reference content and the
themes you are wanting to explore and resources that
might help you to achieve your aims.
14. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make it.
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are on Teams.
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
15. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTION
OUTLINE
Yorks Wizard Adventure
I am going to create a video to advertise a Harry Potter
game that gives people a tour of York. I would also like
to create a mockup of what the app will look like on
Adobe XD including gameplay, title screens and other in
game menus. The advert will showcase the apps features
and I will try to animate monsters to show what they
would look like in game. I will film the video with a
camera and tripod and can edit using premiere pro.
16. LOCATIONS
The one location I will be filming in is York. I will go to
the shambles, the station and the York minster. A
limitation of filming in the city is that it can get quite
busy. This will get in the way of filming shots. It will also
cost money to get me and an actor in as we would have to
get a bus or train. This can cause complications if the
actor isn't willing to do this. Filming in an outside location
can also cause complications with the weather as it can be
unpredictable. I will want to ensure continuity with the
shots with the same lighting and weather so checking this
beforehand is a must. If there are limitations to days that
actors are available I will need to make sure that I plan
around this and check what days they are available for
filming in advance.
17. EQUIPMENT
The equipment I will need is a camera, tripod and an
iPhone. I will also need to use the college computers to
use premiere pro and garage band. I will need to book
out a slot for the camera and tripod so It's important that
I check what days the equipment is free so I can plan my
filming schedule around this. If the kit isnât available on
the days when I need to film then I will use my phone to
capture the footage.
18. PERSONNEL
I will have one actor who will assist me with project. I will
need to pay to get them into York which usually costs
around ÂŁ5.80 on the coastliner for a return ticket. This
will be the only necessary cost for production as I won't
have to feed them since we are filming in the afternoon
after she has been at college. I only have a couple of
shots needed with an actor so It wont take too long to
get all the footage.
19. PROPS/COSTUME/CONSUMAB
LES/ETC
The main prop that I will need for the advert is a mobile
phone. This will be held up in front of the camera to
visualise the games concept by showing the game being
played by the actor. I will also need to print out a fake
QR code to put up on a wall to show the spell feature. I
will have a shot of somebody going over and pretending
to scan it to show how the feature works. I will need to
make sure that my printer works and if not then I can
print it out in college.
21. PRE-PRODUCTION: VISUAL
PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual/creative
planning of your production. This is WHAT you want to
make
You should use this section to develop what is it going to
look/sound like and establish what the visual design is
and the desired sequence.
It is important that you âpre-visualiseâ the project before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process.
The following tasks should be part of your visual
planning, including:
ď Pre-visualisation and concept boards
ď Storyboarding
ď Shot list
ď Flat plans
ď Colour plans

28. CONCEPT BOARD
DISCUSSION/EXPLANATION
I want to have a Harry Potter colour scheme for the apps
design. I think that the house colours are very
recognizable along with lots of browns, greys, blacks and
golds. They are often associated with Harry Potter. I also
want to have the Harry Potter font that has a gothic feel
to it. This will make the app feel more connected to the
films. The colours of the magic should be bright blues
and greens to look more abnormal and to make them
stand out amongst the grays.
For the advert I want it to have a darker tone by editing
the colours in post production. This is to mimic the dark
tones from the films when monsters are attacking. The
advert will make York look dark and gloomy to make it
feel like York is in danger. I will edit the blue tones in
premiere pro to give this appearance.
I also want to show the different locations that I will film
the advert in as they have links to the films like The
29. SHOT LIST
1. A shot of the shambles in York. Somebody then holds
up a phone in front of the camera that shows a spider on
the screen in front of where they were standing.
2. Cuts to the same shot with the phone held in front of
the camera showing the museum gardens with a
dementor in front.. The voiceover explains how York is
overrun with monsters.
3. Same as shot two but with a third location, In the York
Minster but with a flying pixie. The voiceover explains
that the player needs to help save York from the
monsters.
4. First Person camera of somebody walking in the
shambles, The camera then glitches and switches to the
App which has spooky Lighting and shows a map on the
road in front and information giving directions to
the player at the bottom of the screen

5. Shows somebody holding their phone and walking up
the shambles with a map on the bottom. A notification
pops up at the bottom of the screen showing how close
they are to their destination.
6. Somebody walks up to a QR code and scans it. The
voiceover begins to explain how the QR codes work.
7. Shows the phone screen explaining that she has
learned a new spell. A notification then pops up at the
bottom telling her that she is close to a cafĂŠ.
8. continues to show the screen but now in a different
location with a monster in front of her. She begins to
fight it by swiping up on the screen and blue magic goes
towards the monster until it disappears. Voiceover
explains how the players an fight the monsters.

Include names, contact info, and defined roles at
difference stages of production, using a table is
suggested

37. LOCATIONS
The shambles: The roads can be quite
uneven and narrow which could cause
people to trip over or bump into other
people. There might also be a lot of
people getting in front of the camera.
I could avoid filming on weekends
when the town is at its busiest. I could
also make sure to film in early
morning when it will be quieter.
Museum Gardens: The gardens are
quite big so it would be easy to find a
spot that isn't too busy. There is grass
and mud in the gardens which could
cause a hazard in rainy weather.
Making sure I stay to the paths is
important if its rainy so I can prevent
any accidents.
38. LOCATIONS
York Minster: This is also
a busy area where a lot of
tourists go. Making sure I go
on weekdays and at an
earlier time
can prevent issues that
a busy crowd could cause.
For example, people could
get in front of the camera
and knock me or actors
over. It is also close to a
busy road so I should be
aware of cars and should
make sure to stay away from
roads when filming.
39. LOCATIONS
York Station: This will be
quite busy at most times
because many people use the
station weather they are
travelling to York or switching
trains to go somewhere else.
This means there is a high
likelihood of it being busy at
all times of the day. This
could be especially dangerous
because people could be in a
hurry and so they are moving
quickly and not noticing their
surroundings. I should make
sure I limit filming time here
to a minimum and to watch
out for other people so as not
to get in their way.
40. LOCATION
The river: There is the risk of
somebody falling in the river
if we are not careful. I should
make sure to stay away from
the edge and if it the river is
slightly flooded then I should
not film in the location.
After heavy rainfall the size of
the path is
decreased, and rainfall will be
more likely at this time in the
year.
41. RISK ASSESSMENT
â˘People could trip up on the paths in York. I need to make
sure that actors are being careful, so they don't fall over.
â˘Camera equipment could get broken. I need to make
sure that I wear the camera strap around my neck at all
times and to put the camera in its bag when not in use.
â˘The roads and paths could be slippery in bad weather. I
need to make sure that everyone wears good shoes and
is careful on Slippy roads.
â˘Muscle aches and eye strain whilst editing. I should make
sure to take regular breaks from the computers.
42. RISK ASSEMSSENT
â˘Curbs on the sides of raods are tripping hazards and
could cause somebody to get injured. Will need to make
sure that we look where we are walking when filming and
I will make sure I don't require actors to go across them.
â˘There is a risk of somebody fall in the river. I will make
sure that we don't film close to the edge so that nobody
can fall in.
â˘Knocking into people or getting knocked over by
somebody. York can get busy during the day so I will
have to make sure that we are filming in quieter areas to
avoid busy crowds.
43. CONTINGENCY PLAN
â˘It could rain on the day of production. I would need to
make sure to check the weather before planning a
filming schedule. If weather Is unpredictable, then I need
to make sure that the weather between shots is
consistent by making sure it is rainy and overcast
throughout all shots.
â˘Actor could get sick and won't be able to film on a
certain day. I can make sure to schedule multiple days so
that the actor is free or have a backup person who can
fill in last minute.
â˘For people who are travelling in on public transport, the
bus or trains could be delayed. This would cut into
production time. To prevent this, I should make sure I
schedule enough time to allow for people to be late,
whilst still allowing plenty of filming time.
44. CONTINGENCY PLAN
â˘Not being able to get the filming equipment on the days
actors are available. If I can't get the filming equipment, I
will be able to use my phone to capture footage. If this is
the case, then it's important that I charge my phone up
fully before filming. This gives me as much filming time
as possible. It would also be good to bring a portable
charger so that there is no risk of the phone dying
during production.
â˘The computer could crash whilst editing and delete
recent progress. To prevent this from happening I should
make sure to save regularly. I should also make sure it is
saved to OneDrive so that it auto saves.
â˘It might take a long time to learn to use new software. I
will be using new software to create the apps concept.
This could cause delays in the schedule if I struggle
45. CONTINGENCY PLAN
ď§ Software not working could cause delays in production.
Software could not start up correctly or could crash
regularly. If this is the case I should make sure I think of
back up solutions and other ways to create my project
using other programmes.
ď§ Noise in the background of audio. I can try and re-
record audio if there is the time. If not I will have to work
in adobe Audition to clean up and issues in audio.
