3. SYMBOLIC
ASPECTS OF ‘SYMBOLIC’
• LIGHTING AND COLOUR
• POSITIONING
• SETTING/LOCATION
• FACIAL EXPRESSIONS
• BODY LANGUAGE
• OBJECTS
• KEY SIGNIFIERS/ IMAGES
• CLOTHES AND HAIR AND MAKE UP
The lighting in this front cover is natural, emphasising the context of this
regional magazine, the countryside. This is also emphasised with the colour
scheme. Earthy colours associated with nature, such as dark greens and
browns are the most prominent and dominant on the page. These colours
are also often associated with the autumn season, as well as the orange on
the pumpkins signifying Halloween and the autumn period. Making the time
of this image and likely this magazine being September, October or
November. The positioning of the Stag is forward-facing and direct,
dominating the image and signifying importance and strength over the
reader. This positioning can also signify pride which could translate to pride in
regional identities. The setting is clearly in the countryside which is strongly
associated with Suffolk, the region in which the magazine originates. The
earthy colours and strong animal can also be seen as a representation of the
people of Suffolk, stereotypically down to earth and strong characters.
4. WRITTEN
ASPECTS OF ‘WRITTEN’
• SLOGAN
• FONT
• HEADLINE
• CAPTIONS
• STYLE
• CHOICE OF WORDS
• EMPHASIS ON WORDS
The name of the magazine is “East Anglian Daily Times
Suffolk” however the first part is very small and resting
above the word ‘Suffolk’ which is considerably larger than
any other text on the page. This appeals to those in the area
as it will be one of the first things to catch the audiences eye
and draw them to the magazine. The fonts are clear, easy to
read and simple. This could reflect the calm simple
personality of stereotypical countryside residents. Emphasis
is put on the subheadings by making them larger and often
in a different colour. The choice of words is also important in
attracting a certain audience as it uses words synonymous
with country living, such as ‘fayre’ and ‘country chic’.
‘Spooky’ is also linked to Halloween and the time of year.
5. TECHNICAL
ASPECTS OF ‘TECHNICAL’
• CAMERA ANGLES
• FRAMING
• CROPPING
• JUXTAPOSITION
The framing of the cover image is symmetrical portraying a strong
and stable look. The stag is also at eye level making it seem as
though the reader is on the same level as the stag and that animals
and the countryside is just as important as those that live there.
This could be because the countryside is what makes Suffolk its
own.
6. AUDIENCE PROFILE
When thinking of this
magazines audience, I imagine
this;
• Country side
• From Suffolk
• 30+ (probably more towards
an older generation)
• Likes walking as a hobby
• Not rich but average money
and happy with the simple
country life.
