This document provides an analysis of the symbolic, written, and technical elements of the cover, contents page, and a double page spread from a Cornwall lifestyle magazine.
The cover uses natural lighting, blue colors, and signifiers of Cornwall like rock beaches and boats to represent the seaside location. Key words are prominently displayed to emphasize the magazine's focus on Cornwall. A mid-shot divides the cover neatly between sea and shore.
The contents page contains many small images and writing in distinct sections, prioritizing information over attention-grabbing design. Images are cropped to focus on their meaning.
The double page spread uses bright natural lighting and green colors to depict the countryside. A high
2. Symbolic -
Bright natural lighting and blue colours represent the sea life and the light and
simple way of life in Cornwall. The setting/location is clearly in Cornwall by the
sea. They have chosen a summer day to present Cornwall in its best light. The key
signifiers are, the rock beach, the little wooden boat and the choppy sea.
Written –
The choice of words is important here as key words and signifiers are
most dominant and obvious, such as ‘Cornwall’ ‘light’ ‘St Ives’ and
‘treasure house’. The fonts are still simple, clear and neat.
Technical –
An Eye-level mid shot is used here to create a clear and neat cover,
using the break between the sea and shore as a divide on the cover
exactly in the middle creates a clean look. Having the boat (the main
focus) on the right gives space for the writing.

3. CONTENTS
Symbolic –
The layout of this contents page appears to be cluttered but
it is still in sections. All the images are in one section and the
writing in another. So the layout is still simple and neat. The
images are still key signifiers with the cheese, which is most
likely local produce.
Written –
There are no emphasised words or attention grabbing
parts, even the headers for sections are quite small.
Overall there is a lot going on in this page and a lot of
small writing. Less about the attention and more about
information. This is emphasised by the simple fonts.
Technical –
Each of the images are cropped so that the main focus fills the image. This is because with little space and lots of
pictures, you don’t want to waste space with parts of an image that add no value. Having mid shots or close ups
instead of long shots, keeps focus on the meaning and on the article.
4. DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
Symbolic -
Bright natural lighting gives a sense of nature and open
areas. Green colours are associated with the country side
and nature, another key signifier of Cornwall. The house is
positioned up and the river down, giving a sense of height
and hills.
Written –
The writing is small, simple and neat in straight columns.
The simple layout of the article is in-keeping with the style
of the magazine.
Technical –
The ground show and high shot are important in creating levels and height. Hills are key signifiers of Cornish
countryside so this is an important aspect to use in this images.
