It was developed by James Hanson
and his assistant Charles Martel.
It was developed in 1897.

The first schedule, E-F History: America
(Western Hemisphere), was published in
1901 and was followed in 1902 by Z
Bibliography.
The first edition of the scheme was a 44-
page pamphlet and was based on
Dewey’s view of the world of knowledge
which is still used today.
There are 10 main classes. There are 21 main classes.

it is more suitable for large
academic and research libraries.
DDC has an abridged edition, with
numbers that are the same as the
numbers of the full edition, except
shorter.
LCC notation does not lend itself to
abridgment, except to the summary
level.
DDC notation uses only Arabic
numerals. Some notation is mnemonic.
The notation is alphanumeric.
