Story
• “I was home alone for a weekend a few years ago while I was still in
high school. After school one day I was driving home, and when I
passed in front of my house I thought I saw some old lady in white
clothes in my sister’s room looking through the window. I thought it
was stupid, so I went in the room to check out what it actually was,
but I couldn’t find anything. I pretty much forgot about it until later
that night I got a call from a very panicked and scared neighbor
saying there was some old lady pacing back and forth in my sister’s
room. I still have no idea what it was, and I’ve never seen anything
like it since.” — TylerTimoj
The Black Lagoon
To celebrate their first year in university, six friends went camping in the wilderness.
After driving for several hours from the nearest town, they discovered a lagoon,
nestled beside a cliff ideal for diving. They set up camp in the woods nearby and
spent the evening swimming in the warm, clear water. As the sun sunk below the
trees, one of the friends went up to the highest point on the cliff and jumped off,
while the other 5 watched. Their laughter slowly subsided as they waited for him to
surface. It only took half a minute for them to dive in after their friend. Struggling
and sputtering among the reeds in the lagoon, they searched hopelessly for him.
Finally they disentangled themselves and came up, but they never saw their friend
again. Heartbroken they returned to the city and passed a strange and lonely year in
which their only solace was the knowledge that they would return to the lagoon to
honor the anniversary of their friend's death.
A year passed and they returned to the lagoon as a memorial, but as they
approached they saw their friend standing there, head bowed. Excitedly they called
to him and began running towards him, but he didn't turn. As they got closer they
called him more desperately, but still to no avail. With joy they ran towards him, but
stopped dead when they saw not one but five crosses on the waterside.

Working Title:
What is it called? Watery grave
Audience:
Who is your audience? my story is not very scary so the age I am aiming for is young teens as it
will be more spooky to them. The gender I will aim at is primarily male as horror fans are usually
male at that age. Social status doesn’t mean much when it is aimed at kids who don’t know much
about these things. The book is very short making it great for people with a short attention span ,
usually kids have a short attention which is another reason I am targeting them as my primary
consumer.
Project Concept (approx. 200 words)
I plan on making a short audio book on a horror story, the story I am using talks about a group of
people going too a lagoon, while there one of them ends up disappearing under the water and
they make a small cross for him after they realise he is dead, the following year they all go back
and find their friend stood there next to crosses.
Experiments
Foley
The Foley work I did consisted of making the
sound affects and putting them over a clip of
Shawn of the dead, the task was very
challenging as I had never used an audio
recorder and I had never made Foley audio
befre, overall it sounded good and my final
product was better than I expected.
Recording
• Write about your experiences of recording in different places.
Recording was easier than expected, we made short audio clips of us
reciting nursery rhymes, I recorded mine in a silent room so that there
was no background noise behind my voice. I recorded some foley
audio as well, al of this was recorded outside and added to make an
atmosphere
• What effect did it have? How will this influence your project?
Having my voice very isolated with no other audio was very useful as I
could add whatever atmosphere I wanted to. I added some old street
audio form the internet and then added my foley work to create a
nursery rhyme which sounds like it was being told at the time of the
plague
Garage Band
• Include your work with Garage Band, and some
writing about what went well, what could be
better and what you have learned.
As there was a problem with adobe I had to make
my final project on garage band, it was fairly easy to
use although I needed to use many layers to change
the audio volume on each, this made it very messy
and confusing to use but I got it done. Before this
the only experience I had on garage band was just
trying to make some form of music.

Evaluation
Research
My research gave me some basic understanding of audio, going into this project I
had no knowledge on things like foley audio, or how audio is recorded. My
research gave me a better understanding on characters and how to make my
project more ambient. While doing research we looked at clips missing their foley
audio to see how different they where from the original, we then looked at ways
to make certain sounds. This was very useful and when making some foley sounds
for myself the knowledge I learned in the research really helped.
I wish I had done more research on things like garage band and the effect music
can have on a piece of audio, this was something I didn’t do in my final piece and I
think It would have made it a lot better, so this research may have convinced me
to put one in if I did it.
In our research we also made an audio clip of us reading out a nursery rhyme. This
was very useful as It made us see that with the right foley, speed, and tone you
could make a happy children's nursery rhyme a very dark sinister story, I ended up
trying to put the same voice on in my final project as I used for the nursery rhyme
Planning
The hardest part of my planning was finding a story I liked and making it
better. I found a very short and boring script online which had an okay story
but lacked a lot, I decided I could work on this and added characters with
voice lines, this was better than all of them having no personality and only
being known as things like the group.
Once my script was complete and I was happy with it I gathered some people
to voice the different characters, I assigned people to the role that they fit
into best. Later on after recording some of my script I realised I needed more,
to strengthen the story and make it longer, so I added a few more lines.
My other planning was easy but less useful, I planned on making my own
foley noises with a list of different items, it all seemed like it would work until
the items I picked didn’t make a sound remotely close to what I needed.
However I did make a list of all the sounds I was going to produce which was
still very useful I just had to get most of the sounds online rather than making
them myself as it was too hard.
Time Management
My time management was good, I completed my planning, recording and
editing all on time with no issues.
I did need to add more to it after I finished and I never prepared extra time
for this possibility, luckily I had more than enough time to create some more
lines, record, edit and then add sound affects behind them.
If I had more time to produce my work I would have put a lot more effort into
the foley, since I didn’t book out an audio recorder as I didn’t have free time
at home to record, getting foley noises was very hard at college, if I had extra
time I would have booked a recorder out and spent a good few days going to
different places to get the sounds I needed.
Technical Qualities
My work was good in my opinion, It was my first proper audio piece and I used a
wide range of skills. I think my work was to a good standard because had a variety
of characters as well as a narrator, a large amount of audio effects and ambient
sounds in the background to set the scene. One of the things I was most proud of
was later into the story there is some dialogue between two characters, this is the
only part of my story not set at the lagoon, to show this I found some audio
recorded in a bar and added it quietly behind the two of them talking, this made it
very clear they where in a different place and made the story feel like it was more
than just all at the lagoon. The use of all the background audio makes mine similar
to most recorded short stories, as well as the characters and having a narrator
who Is not a character. I think mine is quite similar to most existing products as I
was basing it off a lot of the videos I watched in my research and did not have the
creativity to make it very different as it was my first try at an audio project. I think
my work was complicated enough but I could have added a lot more affects if I
was able to do it on something other than garage band, it really limited my ability
to edit each clip.
Aural Qualities
I think my work sounds okay, I had to be the narrator as I didn’t have anyone else
who wanted to do it, and I personally don’t think I had the right voice for the job, as
well as this we had some difficulties with the audio recorders and my first 5
recording where I put the most effort and really tried to put on a voice all never
saved ad the memory was full. This was an issue as I then had to record again but
this time on my phone, and I didn’t put the same effort into my reading making it
just not sound as good.
Other than this id say my actors all did very well and it sounded good overall.
Audience Appeal
My target audience was (Who is your audience? my story is not very scary so the
age I am aiming for is young teens as it will be more spooky to them. The gender I
will aim at is primarily male as horror fans are usually male at that age. Social
status doesn’t mean much when it is aimed at kids who don’t know much about
these things. The book is very short making it great for people with a short
attention span , usually kids have a short attention which is another reason I am
targeting them as my primary consumer.) and I would say it is still wuite appealing
to my target audience, I think I could have put on a weird voice as the narrator I
would have made it a lot better for the audience I have chosen but it should still
be okay. I think the sound affects, character voice acting and twist at the end make
it appealing to my target audience but there are definitely some parts I would
need to change.

  • 5. Existing Products Research • The Archers (audio drama) • All diegetic All of the sound effects are what the characters can actually hear, e.g. door sounds • Not many sound effects Primary focus on the acting and emotion in characters voices, less about ambience and surroundings • Focus on acting • All voice acting • No narration • Foley sound effects
  • 8. Story • “I was home alone for a weekend a few years ago while I was still in high school. After school one day I was driving home, and when I passed in front of my house I thought I saw some old lady in white clothes in my sister’s room looking through the window. I thought it was stupid, so I went in the room to check out what it actually was, but I couldn’t find anything. I pretty much forgot about it until later that night I got a call from a very panicked and scared neighbor saying there was some old lady pacing back and forth in my sister’s room. I still have no idea what it was, and I’ve never seen anything like it since.” — TylerTimoj The Black Lagoon To celebrate their first year in university, six friends went camping in the wilderness. After driving for several hours from the nearest town, they discovered a lagoon, nestled beside a cliff ideal for diving. They set up camp in the woods nearby and spent the evening swimming in the warm, clear water. As the sun sunk below the trees, one of the friends went up to the highest point on the cliff and jumped off, while the other 5 watched. Their laughter slowly subsided as they waited for him to surface. It only took half a minute for them to dive in after their friend. Struggling and sputtering among the reeds in the lagoon, they searched hopelessly for him. Finally they disentangled themselves and came up, but they never saw their friend again. Heartbroken they returned to the city and passed a strange and lonely year in which their only solace was the knowledge that they would return to the lagoon to honor the anniversary of their friend's death. A year passed and they returned to the lagoon as a memorial, but as they approached they saw their friend standing there, head bowed. Excitedly they called to him and began running towards him, but he didn't turn. As they got closer they called him more desperately, but still to no avail. With joy they ran towards him, but stopped dead when they saw not one but five crosses on the waterside.
  • 9. Idea Generation/Initial Reaction Voice over lots of diegetic and non diegetic noises Sound track I will read the story and be the voice over Ambience, lots of water noises/splashes etc. cars, walking etc. Spooky music and eerie noises I will make a song on garage bad to play the story in

  • 11. Proposal Working Title: What is it called? Watery grave Audience: Who is your audience? my story is not very scary so the age I am aiming for is young teens as it will be more spooky to them. The gender I will aim at is primarily male as horror fans are usually male at that age. Social status doesn’t mean much when it is aimed at kids who don’t know much about these things. The book is very short making it great for people with a short attention span , usually kids have a short attention which is another reason I am targeting them as my primary consumer. Project Concept (approx. 200 words) I plan on making a short audio book on a horror story, the story I am using talks about a group of people going too a lagoon, while there one of them ends up disappearing under the water and they make a small cross for him after they realise he is dead, the following year they all go back and find their friend stood there next to crosses.
  • 13. Foley The Foley work I did consisted of making the sound affects and putting them over a clip of Shawn of the dead, the task was very challenging as I had never used an audio recorder and I had never made Foley audio befre, overall it sounded good and my final product was better than I expected.
  • 14. Recording • Write about your experiences of recording in different places. Recording was easier than expected, we made short audio clips of us reciting nursery rhymes, I recorded mine in a silent room so that there was no background noise behind my voice. I recorded some foley audio as well, al of this was recorded outside and added to make an atmosphere • What effect did it have? How will this influence your project? Having my voice very isolated with no other audio was very useful as I could add whatever atmosphere I wanted to. I added some old street audio form the internet and then added my foley work to create a nursery rhyme which sounds like it was being told at the time of the plague
  • 15. Garage Band • Include your work with Garage Band, and some writing about what went well, what could be better and what you have learned. As there was a problem with adobe I had to make my final project on garage band, it was fairly easy to use although I needed to use many layers to change the audio volume on each, this made it very messy and confusing to use but I got it done. Before this the only experience I had on garage band was just trying to make some form of music.

  • 22. Resource List Resource Owned/Cost What sound effect will it be used for? See weed Not sure how much it costs Lagoon noises Audio recorder Borrow from college This will record everything Car Owned Car sounds water Owned Lagoon noises
  • 24. Research My research gave me some basic understanding of audio, going into this project I had no knowledge on things like foley audio, or how audio is recorded. My research gave me a better understanding on characters and how to make my project more ambient. While doing research we looked at clips missing their foley audio to see how different they where from the original, we then looked at ways to make certain sounds. This was very useful and when making some foley sounds for myself the knowledge I learned in the research really helped. I wish I had done more research on things like garage band and the effect music can have on a piece of audio, this was something I didn’t do in my final piece and I think It would have made it a lot better, so this research may have convinced me to put one in if I did it. In our research we also made an audio clip of us reading out a nursery rhyme. This was very useful as It made us see that with the right foley, speed, and tone you could make a happy children's nursery rhyme a very dark sinister story, I ended up trying to put the same voice on in my final project as I used for the nursery rhyme
  • 25. Planning The hardest part of my planning was finding a story I liked and making it better. I found a very short and boring script online which had an okay story but lacked a lot, I decided I could work on this and added characters with voice lines, this was better than all of them having no personality and only being known as things like the group. Once my script was complete and I was happy with it I gathered some people to voice the different characters, I assigned people to the role that they fit into best. Later on after recording some of my script I realised I needed more, to strengthen the story and make it longer, so I added a few more lines. My other planning was easy but less useful, I planned on making my own foley noises with a list of different items, it all seemed like it would work until the items I picked didn’t make a sound remotely close to what I needed. However I did make a list of all the sounds I was going to produce which was still very useful I just had to get most of the sounds online rather than making them myself as it was too hard.
  • 26. Time Management My time management was good, I completed my planning, recording and editing all on time with no issues. I did need to add more to it after I finished and I never prepared extra time for this possibility, luckily I had more than enough time to create some more lines, record, edit and then add sound affects behind them. If I had more time to produce my work I would have put a lot more effort into the foley, since I didn’t book out an audio recorder as I didn’t have free time at home to record, getting foley noises was very hard at college, if I had extra time I would have booked a recorder out and spent a good few days going to different places to get the sounds I needed.
  • 27. Technical Qualities My work was good in my opinion, It was my first proper audio piece and I used a wide range of skills. I think my work was to a good standard because had a variety of characters as well as a narrator, a large amount of audio effects and ambient sounds in the background to set the scene. One of the things I was most proud of was later into the story there is some dialogue between two characters, this is the only part of my story not set at the lagoon, to show this I found some audio recorded in a bar and added it quietly behind the two of them talking, this made it very clear they where in a different place and made the story feel like it was more than just all at the lagoon. The use of all the background audio makes mine similar to most recorded short stories, as well as the characters and having a narrator who Is not a character. I think mine is quite similar to most existing products as I was basing it off a lot of the videos I watched in my research and did not have the creativity to make it very different as it was my first try at an audio project. I think my work was complicated enough but I could have added a lot more affects if I was able to do it on something other than garage band, it really limited my ability to edit each clip.
  • 28. Aural Qualities I think my work sounds okay, I had to be the narrator as I didn’t have anyone else who wanted to do it, and I personally don’t think I had the right voice for the job, as well as this we had some difficulties with the audio recorders and my first 5 recording where I put the most effort and really tried to put on a voice all never saved ad the memory was full. This was an issue as I then had to record again but this time on my phone, and I didn’t put the same effort into my reading making it just not sound as good. Other than this id say my actors all did very well and it sounded good overall.
  • 29. Audience Appeal My target audience was (Who is your audience? my story is not very scary so the age I am aiming for is young teens as it will be more spooky to them. The gender I will aim at is primarily male as horror fans are usually male at that age. Social status doesn’t mean much when it is aimed at kids who don’t know much about these things. The book is very short making it great for people with a short attention span , usually kids have a short attention which is another reason I am targeting them as my primary consumer.) and I would say it is still wuite appealing to my target audience, I think I could have put on a weird voice as the narrator I would have made it a lot better for the audience I have chosen but it should still be okay. I think the sound affects, character voice acting and twist at the end make it appealing to my target audience but there are definitely some parts I would need to change.

Editor's Notes

  1. Go over as many slides as necessary. Research at least 3 products. Discuss the use of sound effects, music and performance. How have the producers suggested a location/time period and created a tone/feel Try to break down what you can hear. How do the different sound elements work together? How do sound effects add to the drama? What part does music play in the work? Try to listen to a variety of different types of radio programme. If you listen to drama and documentary, you will give yourself a better understanding of what exists and what is possible. It will also help guide your project.
