2. Ordinary World
● Shrek is a green ogre who is kind hearted and doesn't want to hurt others.
Although, he can also have a bad temper.
● Shrek’s ordinary world is a swamp.
● Shrek lives on his own because he wants to.
● He has everything he needs in order to live his life and survive in the swamp.

3. Call To Adventure
● Fairytale creatures were dumped by Lord Farquaad on to Shrek’s swamp.
● Shrek wanted his swamp back, so he goes over to Lord Farquaad’s castle to tell
him to give him his swamp back.
● Shrek’s task is to go and rescue Princess Fiona to get his swamp back.

4. Refusal Of The Call
● Shrek really wants his swamp back, even though he didn’t want to leave it, which
cause him to be hesitant about going ahead on the journey with Donkey.
● Even though he didn’t want to leave his swamp, he went ahead on the journey
with Donkey.

5. Meeting The Mentor
● Donkey is Shrek’s mentor as he helps him
gain confidence and do things that he is
hesitant to do throughout the story. He
reassures Shrek and guides him to make
the best decisions.
● Donkey helps Shrek do things such as:
rescue Fiona from the castle and the
dragon, confess his love to Fiona, and
fight off different foes.

6. Crossing The Threshold
● Shrek decides to make a deal with lord Farquaad to
rescue princess Fiona who is trapped in the castle.
In return, lord Farquaad agrees to get the fairy tail
creatures out of his swamp so that Shrek can live
there once more. The reason that he wants Shrek
to rescue Fiona is because Farquaad wants to
marry her so that he can become king.

7. Tests, Allies, Enemies
Tests
● Shrek has to defeat lord Farquaad's knights
● Shrek and donkey have to cross the very weak bridge above the lava to get to
the castle
● Shrek and donkey have to defeat the dragon to get to Fiona
Allies
● Gingerbread man, pigs, Donkey, Dragon, big bad wolf.
Enemies
● Lord Farquaad, Dragon (before she falls in love with donkey), townspeople.

8. Approach to the Inmost Cave
● Lord Farquaad makes a deal with Shrek
and says he will leave him and his
swamp in peace if he goes on to rescue
Fiona
● Shrek makes the decision and agrees
● He and Donkey proceed to make their
way to the Dragon’s Keep
● Fiona is in the tower that the dragon is
guarding and that is considered the
“Inmost Cave” in this story/movie

9. Ordeal, Death and Rebirth
● After the long and difficult quest,
Shrek and Donkey arrive at the
Dragon’s Keep
● There is a wobbly bridge with lava
underneath and they must cross it
● Despite Donkey being afraid of
heights, they cross safely
● They reach the castle
● They split up to search for Fiona

10. Reward, Seizing the Sword
● Shrek finds Fiona and wakes her up
● Meanwhile, Dragon is keeping Donkey captive
● Shrek saves him too
● The Dragon chases them, but they escape and go across the bridge safely

11. The Road Back
● Shrek is on the way back to Lord
Farquad's palace with Fiona and
Donkey
● On the way Shrek spends time with
Fiona and falls in love with her, but
they get in a fight when he thought
he overheard her calling him an ugly
beast
● Without thinking he let Lord
Farquad take Fiona to become his
wife in return of his lonely swamp to
the way it was before

12. Resurrection
● Shrek crashes Fiona’s wedding telling
her that Lord Farquaad doesn’t
actually love her, and only wants to
marry her so that he can become the
King
● The climax is when Shrek tells Fiona
how he feels and risks her rejecting
him

13. Return with Elixir
● Shrek returns back home to his
Swamp, marrying Fiona
● He changes by allowing others
into his life and learns to love
● He faced physical and emotional
challenges but now he's ready to
move on and start a new life

15. Hero - The Chosen One
● The hero of the story is Shrek.
● He rescued Fiona like he was told to.
● When he rescued Fiona, he ended up getting swamp back.

16. Villain/Shadow/Devil Figure
● The “devil figure” of the story would be Lord Farquaad.
● He was the one who dumped the fairy creatures on Shrek’s swamp.
● He is also the Lord of Duloc, or some say Ruler of Duloc.

17. Platonic Ideal
● Shrek’s best friend is Donkey.
● He was by his side the entire journey.
● He was there with Shrek when he need to go to Lord Farquaad’s castle to get his
swamp back.
● He went to go help Shrek rescue Fiona as well.

18. Trickster
● The Trickster in Shrek would be Donkey as he would lie/deceive foes in order to
help shrek advance in his quests. An example of donkey lying would be when he
told the dragon he liked her so shrek would advance. He lied because at first he
didn’t like her.

19. Ally or Allies (Sidekick)
● The sidekick of the story was Donkey
because he would always support
Shrek
● Donkey distracted the dragon while
Shrek went to rescue the princess

20. Damsel in Distress
● Fiona was the Damsel in Distress
● She was waiting for her true love to rescue her from the dragon and kiss her to
make her become permanently a human
● She wanted her true love to rescue her, and refused Shrek to take her to the
kingdom because she wanted Lord Farquaad to save her

21. The Gentle Giant
● Dragon is considered the gentle giant in this movie
● She originally began as an antagonist, having to
guard Fiona in the castle
● She takes a liking to Donkey when he sweet-talks
her in desperation to not get eaten
● When Shrek and Donkey are leaving the castle, she
chases them, not wanting Donkey to leave
● She helps Shrek later and eats Lord Farquaad so
Fiona doesn't marry him

22. Comic Duo
● Shrek and Donkey are the original comic duo
● A hero and his sidekick
● As they accompany each other on their journey,
they form a bond
● They find out they have things in common
● They are loyal to each other and stick together
● They joke around or share a laugh together every
once in a while

23. Nemesis/Challenger
● Lord Farquaad is the main antagonist and nemesis of
the movie
● He banished all the fairy-tale creatures from his land,
making them come to Shrek’s swamp and angering
him
● This is what made Shrek travel to the country in the
first place (he wanted to regain his privacy)
● Lord Farquaad wanted to marry Fiona in her princess
form
● He only wanted to marry her in order to become true
King and he didn’t love her as Shrek did
