Definition
In garments industry making of garments parts
by cutting of fabrics from the spread or lay of
fabric accurately and fairly as per the drawing
of the patterns, is called fabric cutting.
Requirements of fabric cutting
 Precision of cut
 Clean edges
 Infused edges
 Support of the lay
Precision of cut
To ensure the cutting of fabric accurately according to the line
drown of the marker plan.
Clean edge
By avoiding the fraing out of yarn from the fabric edge. Cutting
edge must be smooth clean. Knife must be sharp for smooth or
clean edge.
Infused edge
During fabric cutting, the friction between the fabric and blade;
the blade produces temperature in the temperature may be
up to 3000c. To avoid the problem.
Support of the lay
Surface of the cutting table depends on methods of fabric
cutting. The table surface should be capable to support the
lay as well as to ensure that all the plies are cut at a time
during fabric cutting.
Methods of fabric cutting
There are mainly three types of fabric cutting:
Manual method
 Hand operated scissor
Semi-automatic
 Straight knife
 Band knife
 Round knife
 Die cutter
 Drill
Automatic
 Knife cutting
 Cutting by water jet
 Laser cutting
 Plasma torch cutting
Scissor is a cutting implement consisting of two blades
joined by a swivel pin that allows the cutting edges to be
opened and closed. Hand scissor is hand operated. Hand
Scissors are used for cutting various thin materials , such
as paper , cardboard, metal foil, thin plastic, cloth, rope,
and wire. Scissors can also be used to cut hair and food.
 It is the first & oldest machine for fabric cutting
 Very Easy to operate.
 This is used for cutting one or two plies of fabric.
 Good for fancy cutting.
 Most cheep machine.
Advantage of Hand Scissors
 Over head cost less.
 Good for individual production.
 Easy to operate & Risk is low.
Disadvantage Hand Scissors
 Large production is not possible.
 Not suitable for economical process.
 Fabric wastage is very high.
It is the most useful cutting instrument in apparel cutting. In apparel
industry, more than 99% cases this knife is used. This machine is
called straight knife cutting machine because its cutter is straight in
shape. It is used for both woven & knit fabric. In this machine
different types of straight knife are used according to the different
cutting objects. This machine provides good efficiency.
Features of Straight Knife Cutting
Machine The main parts of this machine are straight knife, electric motor, handle,
grinder, base plate, stand/ knife holder, lubricating unit, wheel etc.
 Could be used to cut higher depth of fabric.
 Knife height is 10 cm to 33 cm.
 Knife stroke is 2.5 cm to 4.5 cm.
 Motor r.p.m. is 3000 to 4000.
Advantages of Straight Knife Cutting Machine
 Automatic grinding.
 Automatically lubrication.
 Comparatively cheep.
 Suitable for straight line & curve line.
 Can be cut high curve line than round knife.
Disadvantages of Straight Knife Cutting Machine
 High speed of the machine causes high risk of damage.
 Faulty knife could damage fabric layer.
 Risk is high for physical damage of operator.
Band knife cutting machine is an endless and looks like a loop.
It is used for the cutting of fabric rolls without cardboard-inner
tube. It is important instrument of cutting fabrics.And it could
adjustable speed to fit different fabrics.
Features of Band Knife Cutting Machine
 An endless knife is used here.
 A large size of table is used to support the fabric & for cutting.
 Automatic grinder is used.
 High speed r.p.m. motor is used.
 Required a large space for it.
 This is like a saw mill cutter.
Advantages of Band Knife Cutting Machine
 Very large productivity for limited product
 Such as collars, cuff, placket etc.
 Automatic grinder grind the knife instantly
 Possible to cut 900 angle of the lay.
Disadvantages of Band Knife Cutting Machine
 Not suitable for large component due to the length of the table.
 Running cost is higher.
 Required fix space.
 Not possible to cut fabric directly.
This machine is called round knife cutting machine because
its cutter is round but slightly octagonal in shape. This
machine is small in size, flexible & used for small
production. It is also a popular cutting machine.
Features of Round Knife Cutting
Machine Knife diameter varies from 6-20 cm.
 Manual grinder is used.
 Motor r.p.m. is 800-1600.
 A handle for the cutter to direct the knife.
 Easy to handle & movement due to low weight.
Advantage of Round Knife Cutting Machine
 Suitable for cutting single ply as well as multilayer (say 20-30layers).
 Easy to handle & operate.
 Suitable for gentle curve line cutting.
 To cut the larger part of the garments.
 With a same r.p.m. its efficiency is 10 times greater than the straight
knife.
Disadvantage of Round Knife Cutting Machine
 Very low r.p.m. & knife height.
 Manual grinder is used.
 Difficult to cut small components & high curve line.
 Not suitable for large production.
 Lubrication is manually done.
Die cutting is the process of using a die to shear webs of
low-strength materials, such as rubber, fiber, foil, cloth,
paper, corrugated fiberboard, paperboard, plastics,
pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes, foam and sheet metal.
Features of Die Cutting Machine
 Mainly two types of die cuttings are available namely: Presses &
Checkers
 Main parts of all die cutting m/c are Blade, Ram Head, Die, Motor &
Operating System of Ram
 Die is made by metallic strip
 Most useful to cut sharp & small parts
Advantages of Die Cutter
 Very accurate and excellent for small components
 The greater the blade movement, the faster the blade cuts the
fabric & the more rapidly
 The oparate can be easily & push the Machine
Disadvantages
 uses sharp blades so can be dangerous
 can be quite expensive if not used often
 new ones have to be made for each design
 has to be mounted onto a strong plywood base beore cutting
Where reference marks are needed away from the
edge of a garment Part, such as for the position of
pockets, button hole, darts and similar features, a hole
is often drilled through all the plies of fabric in the lay.
Features of Drill Machine
 The drill mounting includes a motor, a base plate with a hole to
allow the drill to pass through, and a spirit level to ensure that the
base is horizontal and hence the drill vertical.
 The momentum of drill is completed at 90 ̊ angle in the fabric lay
by the level of sprit.
 For tightly woven fabric the hole is permanent for a long time.
Advantage of Drill Machine
 This machine is needed to mark on the end of components of
dresses specially for setting pocket, dart & so on.
 It can make the hole permanently for a long.
Dis-advantage of Drill Machine
 The use of machine is limited.
On board computer with high capacity hard disk and monitor that
can independently memorize the cutting graphics. Tukatech's
automatic fabric cutting machine saves both time and money.
BEATING HEART OF THE MACHINE. High frequency oscillating
knife with option to control the angle of sharpening.

 This method provide the most accurate possible cutting at high
speed
 Marker is not necessary to put over the fabric lays during
cutting

 Very fast cutting operation
 Speed of can be controlled
 No need of marker
 Less labor cost
Disadvantage
 Very expensive m/c
 Higher maintenance cost
 Skilled manpower required
A water jet cutter is an industrial tool capable of cutting a wide
variety of materials using a very high-pressure jet of water or a
mixture of water. The cutter is commonly connected to a high-
pressure water pump where the water is then ejected from the
nozzle, cutting through the material by spraying it with the jet of
high-speed water. The features of water jet cutting machine is
given below:
Features of Water jet Cutting Machine
 In water jet cutter, water or mixture of water is used to cut fabric
which is controlled by computer.
 Special software is used to cut fabric.
 To improve the cutting speed, it is needed to adjust the pressure &
radius of the jet.
 Water Jet Cutting Machine .
Advantage of Water-jet Cutting Machine
 Most effective to cut hard materials such as leather & plastic.
 Sound of cutting is less.
 Higher cutting speed.
Disadvantage of Water jet Cutting Machine
 There is a danger of wet edges.
 High costly.
 Not suitable for high lay of fabric.
 The sound of jet need to control.
Laser cutting is a technology that uses a laser to cut materials,
and is typically used for industrial manufacturing applications, but
is also starting to be used by schools, small businesses, and
hobbyists. Laser cutting works by directing the output of a high-
power laser most commonly through optics.
Features
 This method, fabric is cut by a ray of light in a very fine spot using
a laser.
 Radius of spot of light is 0.25 mm & high powerful
 Fabric is cut at a speed of 13 meter per min
 Cutting head is controlled by computer
Advantage
 Very fast cutting operation
 Can be cut in a proper line as the cutting head is controlled by
computer
 As the fabric is cut by ray off high so that no need of sharpening
operation
Disadvantage
 Not suitable for cutting of multi-layer of fabric
 For thermoplastic fabric the cutting edge should be fused
 Very expensive cutting method
Plasma cutting is a process that cuts through electrically conductive
materials by means of an accelerated jet of hot plasma. Typical
materials cut with a plasma torch include steel, Stainless steel,
aluminum, brass and copper. Plasma cutting is often used in
fabrication shops, automotive repair and restoration, industrial
construction, and salvage and scrapping operations.
Features
 This system, fabric are cut by a thin through the
nozzle which is made by Argon gas.
 Most useful for cutting single ply of fabric.
 One or more fabric plies can be cut.
Advantage
 Automatic torch height control system
 Automatic torch explosion system
 Easily networked
Disadvantage
 Higher number of fabric not cut
 Need higher skill operator
 Costly

Definition In garments industry making of garments parts by cutting of fabrics from the spread or lay of fabric accurately and fairly as per the drawing of the patterns, is called fabric cutting. Requirements of fabric cutting  Precision of cut  Clean edges  Infused edges  Support of the lay
  • 3. Precision of cut To ensure the cutting of fabric accurately according to the line drown of the marker plan. Clean edge By avoiding the fraing out of yarn from the fabric edge. Cutting edge must be smooth clean. Knife must be sharp for smooth or clean edge.
  • 4. Infused edge During fabric cutting, the friction between the fabric and blade; the blade produces temperature in the temperature may be up to 3000c. To avoid the problem. Support of the lay Surface of the cutting table depends on methods of fabric cutting. The table surface should be capable to support the lay as well as to ensure that all the plies are cut at a time during fabric cutting.
  • 5. Methods of fabric cutting There are mainly three types of fabric cutting: Manual method  Hand operated scissor Semi-automatic  Straight knife  Band knife  Round knife  Die cutter  Drill Automatic  Knife cutting  Cutting by water jet  Laser cutting  Plasma torch cutting
  • 6. Scissor is a cutting implement consisting of two blades joined by a swivel pin that allows the cutting edges to be opened and closed. Hand scissor is hand operated. Hand Scissors are used for cutting various thin materials , such as paper , cardboard, metal foil, thin plastic, cloth, rope, and wire. Scissors can also be used to cut hair and food.
  • 7.  It is the first & oldest machine for fabric cutting  Very Easy to operate.  This is used for cutting one or two plies of fabric.  Good for fancy cutting.  Most cheep machine. Advantage of Hand Scissors  Over head cost less.  Good for individual production.  Easy to operate & Risk is low. Disadvantage Hand Scissors  Large production is not possible.  Not suitable for economical process.  Fabric wastage is very high.
  • 8. It is the most useful cutting instrument in apparel cutting. In apparel industry, more than 99% cases this knife is used. This machine is called straight knife cutting machine because its cutter is straight in shape. It is used for both woven & knit fabric. In this machine different types of straight knife are used according to the different cutting objects. This machine provides good efficiency.

Features of Straight Knife Cutting Machine The main parts of this machine are straight knife, electric motor, handle, grinder, base plate, stand/ knife holder, lubricating unit, wheel etc.  Could be used to cut higher depth of fabric.  Knife height is 10 cm to 33 cm.  Knife stroke is 2.5 cm to 4.5 cm.  Motor r.p.m. is 3000 to 4000. Advantages of Straight Knife Cutting Machine  Automatic grinding.  Automatically lubrication.  Comparatively cheep.  Suitable for straight line & curve line.  Can be cut high curve line than round knife. Disadvantages of Straight Knife Cutting Machine  High speed of the machine causes high risk of damage.  Faulty knife could damage fabric layer.  Risk is high for physical damage of operator.
  • 10. Band knife cutting machine is an endless and looks like a loop. It is used for the cutting of fabric rolls without cardboard-inner tube. It is important instrument of cutting fabrics.And it could adjustable speed to fit different fabrics.
  • 11. Features of Band Knife Cutting Machine  An endless knife is used here.  A large size of table is used to support the fabric & for cutting.  Automatic grinder is used.  High speed r.p.m. motor is used.  Required a large space for it.  This is like a saw mill cutter. Advantages of Band Knife Cutting Machine  Very large productivity for limited product  Such as collars, cuff, placket etc.  Automatic grinder grind the knife instantly  Possible to cut 900 angle of the lay. Disadvantages of Band Knife Cutting Machine  Not suitable for large component due to the length of the table.  Running cost is higher.  Required fix space.  Not possible to cut fabric directly.
  • 12. This machine is called round knife cutting machine because its cutter is round but slightly octagonal in shape. This machine is small in size, flexible & used for small production. It is also a popular cutting machine.
  • 13. Features of Round Knife Cutting Machine Knife diameter varies from 6-20 cm.  Manual grinder is used.  Motor r.p.m. is 800-1600.  A handle for the cutter to direct the knife.  Easy to handle & movement due to low weight. Advantage of Round Knife Cutting Machine  Suitable for cutting single ply as well as multilayer (say 20-30layers).  Easy to handle & operate.  Suitable for gentle curve line cutting.  To cut the larger part of the garments.  With a same r.p.m. its efficiency is 10 times greater than the straight knife. Disadvantage of Round Knife Cutting Machine  Very low r.p.m. & knife height.  Manual grinder is used.  Difficult to cut small components & high curve line.  Not suitable for large production.  Lubrication is manually done.
  • 14. Die cutting is the process of using a die to shear webs of low-strength materials, such as rubber, fiber, foil, cloth, paper, corrugated fiberboard, paperboard, plastics, pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes, foam and sheet metal.

Features of Die Cutting Machine  Mainly two types of die cuttings are available namely: Presses & Checkers  Main parts of all die cutting m/c are Blade, Ram Head, Die, Motor & Operating System of Ram  Die is made by metallic strip  Most useful to cut sharp & small parts Advantages of Die Cutter  Very accurate and excellent for small components  The greater the blade movement, the faster the blade cuts the fabric & the more rapidly  The oparate can be easily & push the Machine Disadvantages  uses sharp blades so can be dangerous  can be quite expensive if not used often  new ones have to be made for each design  has to be mounted onto a strong plywood base beore cutting
  • 16. Where reference marks are needed away from the edge of a garment Part, such as for the position of pockets, button hole, darts and similar features, a hole is often drilled through all the plies of fabric in the lay.
  • 17. Features of Drill Machine  The drill mounting includes a motor, a base plate with a hole to allow the drill to pass through, and a spirit level to ensure that the base is horizontal and hence the drill vertical.  The momentum of drill is completed at 90 ̊ angle in the fabric lay by the level of sprit.  For tightly woven fabric the hole is permanent for a long time. Advantage of Drill Machine  This machine is needed to mark on the end of components of dresses specially for setting pocket, dart & so on.  It can make the hole permanently for a long. Dis-advantage of Drill Machine  The use of machine is limited.

The cutter is commonly connected to a high- pressure water pump where the water is then ejected from the nozzle, cutting through the material by spraying it with the jet of high-speed water. The features of water jet cutting machine is given below:

Features of Water jet Cutting Machine  In water jet cutter, water or mixture of water is used to cut fabric which is controlled by computer.  Special software is used to cut fabric.  To improve the cutting speed, it is needed to adjust the pressure & radius of the jet.  Water Jet Cutting Machine . Advantage of Water-jet Cutting Machine  Most effective to cut hard materials such as leather & plastic.  Sound of cutting is less.  Higher cutting speed. Disadvantage of Water jet Cutting Machine  There is a danger of wet edges.  High costly.  Not suitable for high lay of fabric.  The sound of jet need to control.

Features  This method, fabric is cut by a ray of light in a very fine spot using a laser.  Radius of spot of light is 0.25 mm & high powerful  Fabric is cut at a speed of 13 meter per min  Cutting head is controlled by computer Advantage  Very fast cutting operation  Can be cut in a proper line as the cutting head is controlled by computer  As the fabric is cut by ray off high so that no need of sharpening operation Disadvantage  Not suitable for cutting of multi-layer of fabric  For thermoplastic fabric the cutting edge should be fused  Very expensive cutting method
  • 24. Plasma cutting is a process that cuts through electrically conductive materials by means of an accelerated jet of hot plasma. Typical materials cut with a plasma torch include steel, Stainless steel, aluminum, brass and copper. Plasma cutting is often used in fabrication shops, automotive repair and restoration, industrial construction, and salvage and scrapping operations.
