INTRODUCTION
In apparel industry, the cutting department is nothing without
fabric cutting machines. There are so many cutting tools have
used to cut the fabric in the apparel sector. Straight knife cutting
machine and Band knife cutting machines both are vastly used in
the apparel manufacturing industry.
STRAIGHT KNIFE CUTTING MACHINE
The machine which is used to cut components of differing size is
called straight knife. This is the most frequently used equipment
for cutting garments in bulk. It is moved along the cut contours,
while the fabric spread remains in a fixed position. In apparel
industry, more than 99% cases this knife is used.

FEATURES OF STRAIGHT KNIFE MACHINE:
★ Different types of knife edge are used for cutting such as,
straight edge, wave edge, sew edge etc.
★ Machine weight is around 12-15 kg. Knife cut the fabric very
fast due to high speed of motor.
★ Knife guard is attached to the front of the knife.
Sharp and heavy corners can be cut.

STRAIGHT KNIFE MACHINE PARTS WITH THEIR FUNCTION
A base plate: Usually in rollers for easy movement.
An electric motor: It is used for transmit motion to blade.
Handle: For the cutter to direct the blade.
Knife: The main function of knife is to cut the fabric.
Knife guard: It used as safety device to prevent any accident.
Grinding wheel: Used to sharp the knife during cutting.
Roller wheel: To move the machine over cutting table easily.

WORKING PRINCIPLE OF STRAIGHT KNIFE MACHINE:
# Firstly, machine operator spread the fabric lays in the cutting
table. Then, marker is placed on fabric.
# Then, straight knife cutting machine is placed at any corner
point of fabric lays.
# After that, machine operator switches on the cutting machine
and continues cutting process.

ADVANTAGES OF STRAIGHT KNIFE CUTTING MACHINE
@ A large number of fabric lays can be cut by the machine due
to high length of knife. So, productivity is high.
@ Automatic grinding and Automatically lubrication.
@ Comparatively cheap & moved easily by wheel. Suitable for
straight line and curve line.
DISADVANTAGES OF STRAIGHT KNIFE CUTTING MACHINE:
# High speed of the machine causes high risk of damage. Faulty
knife could damage fabric layer.
# Motor weight creates knife deflection which may be creates
faulty pieces.
# Risk is high for physical damage of operator.
APPLICATION OF STRAIGHT KNIFE CUTTING MACHINE
Straight knife cutting machine is suitable for straight line cutting,
curve line cutting and for large part cutting. It is used for large
production. This machine is most comm-only used in Garments
Industry of Bangladesh (99%). Again, In this machine fabric can
be cut from any angle.

BAND KNIFE CUTTING MACHINE
A band knife is a power tool used for cutting cloth. Very similar
in operation to a band saw, it has an endless loop blade and the
material to be cut is supported by a flat table. It is one of the
important equipment used in apparel manufacturing factory.

# Continuous knife/ Without edge knife. Here used Steel knife,
Teflon coated.
# Rotatory motion of the knife. The machine is fixed but fabric
lay is movable while cutting.
# Suitable for cutting at a perfectly 90 degree angle. It has airball
facility for moving fabric lay.

BAND KNIFE MACHINE PARTS WITH DESCRIPTION
The band knife: A band knife blade forms a continuously moving
circle during the cutting process.
The knife sharpener: The frequency of sharpening depends on
the stuff existence cutting.
The move surface: This of the machine is polish as well as may
live equipped amongst a particular air blowing system.
Safety devices: It used, cutting is performed at high speed.

WORKING PRINCIPLE OF BAND KNIFE MACHINE:
1. Clean the table then spread the paper & spread fabric.
2. After that attach the tape and then spread the marker.
3. Start the cutting process. Stickering in cutting fabric.
4. Lastly, bundle the cut fabric, Checking all the cut panels.
ADVANTAGES OF BAND KNIFE CUTTING MACHINE
@ Very effective than a straight knife to cut small pieces of
garments. Low space is required for machine installation.
@ Only one operator can fully control a machine with fully
operational. An automatic grinder is used.
@ The intensity of accidents is very low. Air blower helps to
smoothly handle and cut the fabric layer.
DISADVANTAGES OF BAND KNIFE MACHINE
# Without a proper marker the fabric wastage is high. Not
possible to cut large length garments due to table length.
# Fabric is not possible to cut directly. High weight layer could
be a problem with a smooth, perfect cut.
# Here, too many markers required for the large production.

APPLICATION OF BAND KNIFE CUTTING MACHINE
This machine is used for the cutting of fabric rolls without
cardboard-inner tube. Again, it is works automatically according
to the height of the relevant material. Band knife machine is with
special blower decreases resistance between fabrics and table
which enables the fabrics be moved easily and be cut precisely.
COMPARISON BETWEEN STRAIGHT & BAND KNIFE
CONCLUSION
Both straight knife and band knife cutting machine are very
important in the readymade apparel industry. more than 99%
cases straight knife is used. It is used for both woven & knit
fabric. On the other hand, Band knife machine is a convenient
high-performance device for precise cutting of materials. Both
have a great impact in cutting department.
