67 of our Grade 8 and Grade 9 learners wrote the 5th
National Natural
Science Olympiad today.

2. 1) ACADEMICS
There are only 3 weeks remaining for grades 10 to 12 before the commencement of the mid-year
examinations. By now the senior grades should be well into their study programme. With the new
CAPS curriculum, the demands on our learners have increased both with content level and volume of
work to be covered.
Our learners should be spending at least 3 hours per day with their exam preparation and extended
study periods over the weekends. Those studying Mathematics in particular must seriously understand
the necessity for such preparation. Our learners must approach their teachers in good time if they do not
understand any sections covered so far this year.
We encourage Parents to monitor study periods and assist their children during this exam period. If our
learners need assistance with study timetables or counseling during this period, they must please
approach the school counselors.
INTERHOUSE ONE-ACT PLAYS
We would like to wish all our learners involved in the Interhouse One-Act Plays good luck with their plays
tonight.
MOTHERS’ DAY
We at Fairmont wish all our teacher moms, administration staff moms, and
moms of our pupils at Fairmont a very happy Mothers’ Day. We hope that
you will be spoilt this Sunday and receive a little ‘payback’ for all the love,
time and effort you invest in your children.

URGENT NOTICE FOR ALL PUPILS
 NO pupils will be allowed to go home early on any day or after a test without a written letter from
the parent requesting this. No emails!
 Permission for going home early will only be allowed for emergencies.
 If a pupil is too sick to stay for the full day after a test, then they must not come to school to write,
but must provide the school with a medical certificate.
PLEASE NOTE!
All pupils are required to be at school at the regular time - 07h55 - even if they are
not writing a test. This time will be used for consolidation or tasks organized by
various subject departments.
All parents are asked to please be aware that when your child misses a Monday or a
Thursday test, a letter from the parent and the relevant chemist slip (the date on the
slip must pertain to the pupil’s absenteeism and medication bought), a certificate
from the clinic or a doctor’s certificate is required. A medical certificate from either
the clinic or the doctor is applicable for missing any exam. A note from you excusing your child from
school for the days missed (not test days) is also required.
Grade 9 and Matric pupils must produce a doctor’s certificate for tests and exams missed as these are
the two exit phases and their marks are externally moderated by the Education Department.
Learners are not allowed to go home immediately after a test if they are ill. They have to stay until first
break. If they are ill, then they should not come to school. A doctor’s certificate will be required.

4) PARENT FORUM
We are just 2 short weeks away from one of our bigger fundraisers of the year.
ME-X 2015 will take place from 21 - 24 May at the Tygervalley Shopping Centre. This expo is
aimed at matric learners and young adults across the Western Cape, and will feature exhibitors in
the market for the Matric Dance, Plett Rage, Tertiary Education, Student Loans, Gap Years,
Driver’s Licences and more.

6. Our exhibitor list is growing, and so is our excitement!
We will also be doing a drive for the Princess Project, a charity who collects unwanted
eveningwear, shoes, fabric, jewellery, make-up - in fact anything that could be functional for a
learner attending their Matric Dance. These items are donated to learners who would otherwise
not be able to afford to attend their function.
MADCO, Fairmont High School’s Grade 11 Matric Dance Committee, will also be at the expo
selling tickets to win some fantastic prizes.
Please support our school by visiting the expo at Tygervalley, bring the items you no longer have a
use for to donate to the Princess Project, and buy a ticket from MADCO at the same time.
We look forward to seeing lots of Fairmonts’ young adults there.

As mentioned, the Parent Forum will be collecting items for the
Princess Project at the Matric Experience Expo.
We would love to be able to hang the evening dresses on a clothes rail
for better visibility.
If anyone is able to lend us a clothes rail and some hangers for the
duration of the expo ie 21 to 24 May, it would be greatly appreciated.

WORKPARTY, SATURDAY, 9 MAY 2015
Once again we’re back into the swing of things after 2 lovely long weekends
and a very short 3 day week.
Most of us are back to the grindstone now though and, this coming Saturday, 9
May, the Parent Forum will be holding another work party from 13h00 - 15h00.
The planned mission is to complete and spray new benches, and to repair any
older benches that might be in need of this.
The members of the RCL will ALL be attending as well to give their homeroom
a bit of a makeover.
Bring the family and assist in improving the facilities of our childrens’ school
while meeting and making new friends all at the same time.
Fires will be lit, so join us for a bring-and-braai afterwards.
We look forward to seeing a good number of Fairmont families there!
5) RAISING FUNDS FOR NEPAL EARTHQUAKE SURVIVORS
3 Past Pupils of Fairmont High School communicated with us via Facebook. They are reaching out
to Fairmont’s parents to assist them with this very worthwhile cause.
Below is the letter they sent:

7. Hello Fairmont Family
As I am sure you have all heard, on Saturday, 25 April 2015, Nepal experienced a 7.8 magnitude
earthquake, devastating the country, killing thousands and leaving many families permanently
displaced from their homes.
Myself, Storm Hawman and Darren Lion Waterman, 3 past pupils of Fairmont, were in
Kathmandu, Nepal, at the time of the earthquake. While we managed to come out of it relatively
unscathed, we have witnessed firsthand the horrific impact this event had on Nepal and its
people.
We made the decision to stay and help in any way we could and are raising funds in conjunction
with our hostel “I Am Traveller Hostel” to support the survivors of this tragic event. We have
already delivered 30 food and supply parcels to the affected village of Bungamati, Lalitpur.
The parcels contained rice, oil, salt, biscuits, soap, sanitary pads, phenol spray to avoid spread of
diseases and rehydration salts. We also assisted families in recovering personal items from the
rubble that was once their home. With monsoon season coming, displaced families are still in
desperate need of tents and waterproof tarps. They also need water purification drops because
drinking water shortages are an issue Nepal has struggled with even prior to the earthquake.

6) LIBRARIAN’S CHOICE
EDGE OF THE TABLE
Fourteen Cape Flats Youths Tell Their Life Stories
‘From where I come from, everyone has a story and everyone
comes from heartache’. Mario’s words powerfully prefigure the
contents of these fourteen life narratives by young people on the
Cape Flats. Behind the beauty of the Mother City lies the harsh
reality of poverty and young people’s struggles to hold to their
ideals in contexts that undercut them. Children learn young about
violence, death, addiction and the failures of social institutions to
care. Their encounters with life’s rawness force them constantly
to refashion relationships that matter.
From the stories, it’s clear that state institutions and families fail
children. Interventions that matter come from NGO’s and faith-based interventions, and from
young people’s efforts to secure their tenuous worlds. Almost all of the young people report
on the absence of fathers and father-figures in their lives, and on the vulnerabilities of their
mothers and mother-figures. Few have lived continuously in one place; most report having
shifted all over the Cape Flats and beyond, with consequent breaks in their experiences of
schooling and friendship networks. Some children find in gang structures the sense of
belonging, respect and excitement that school, family and other networks do not offer. Many
were introduced to hard drugs while still young, usually by peers. Those who have managed
to resist or reform, tell of the difficulties of staying outside drug-related activities which
structure the local economy of their worlds. Young people reflect unflinchingly on the
fractured nature of their lives, on the processes that make for vulnerability, and on their
efforts to hold together relationships that matter.
This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to know how we are failing our youth,
and how they understand that failure.

8. 7) ORANGE RIVER 2016
FAIRMONT HIGH SCHOOL
Fairmont High School is once again offering twenty students the opportunity to canoe along the
Orange River. The route is a family-friendly section of the river for which no previous paddling
experience is required. Children as young as 5 years and adults over 70 years have enjoyed the
Orange River with Amanzi Trails, as it meanders through the rugged landscape of the Richtersveld. It
is a life-changing experience that will leave your child feeling restored and revitalised with an added
sense of achievement. Drifting on a 5-metre Indian Mohawk canoe, gliding alongside the river banks
with their rich bird life, hearing the call of the fish eagle. Letting the sun soak tensions away, sleeping
under the stars. These experiences are but an idea of what your child will experience with Amanzi
Trails.

The cost for the trip is as follows:
 R2,190-00 per person. This cost includes all meals from dinner on night of arrival until breakfast
on day of departure. Drinks and snacks excluded.
 Transport to and from Amanzi Trails amounts to R1,310-00 per person which includes two meals
on the road.
 TOTAL: R3,500-00
A deposit of R1,750-00 must be made as soon as possible to secure your spot on this trip. Once your
deposit has been finalized, you will be responsible to find a replacement if you are unable to
attend. The total of R3,500-00 must be paid before or on 29 February 2016.
Your child will need a valid passport that is valid for 6 months after returning to South Africa. If you
pay the deposit and your child does not have a passport by the beginning of April, he or she will not be
allowed to accompany us on the trip. Non-South African citizens need a visa. As from 1 July 2015
minors must also have an unabridged birth certificate and will have to be accompanied by
affidavits and certified copies of the ID documents from the father and mother or guardian.
NB: If you are interested, please collect a booklet from Ms. Soga before any payments are made.
This booklet will contain all relevant information regarding the documents that are needed and all
indemnity forms.
The first 20 learners to pay their deposits and hand the proof of payment, a copy of their valid
passport and the filled-in booklet to Mrs. Soga, will have booked their place on the trip.

11. CROSS COUNTRY
The third race of the 2015 season, at
Tygerberg High School, was a very
successful one for our Monty team.
Samuel van der Merwe (Boys U17)
once again put up a great performance,
ending up 2nd
, 2 meters behind the
South African champion.
Carmen van der Merwe (Girls U19)
continued to deliver an outstanding
performance, coming 4th
for the third
time in a row. Bianca Harper (Girls
U19) also delivered a great performance

for the second time. Jessica

12. U16A GIRLS’ HOCKEY : CHAMPIONS IN THE MAKING
Over the long weekend
when most people were
relaxing and breaking
away, the u/16 A girls
team was hard at work in
Rustenburg’s
Championship Cup
Tournament. 12 schools
took part and there was
some serious competition.
Even though the team
didn’t receive the big
trophy, they took a lot
away from the
tournament. Growing as a
team being the most
important. The team
made the semi-finals and
drew against Rustenburg. The moment of truth: a showdown!! Rustenburg won the battle, but our
girls will meet up with them again soon enough in the league fixtures. The results of the games
were as follows:

The girls ended fourth overall, but we weren’t done yet. We are proud to congratulate one of our
captains, Jessica Rossouw, as the best goal scorer of the tournament with 6 goals. Well done!!!
The girls came back very tired, but more knowledgeable and ready for the official season to start!!!

TEAM GIRLS’ : FAIRMONT SHINES IN SPAR CHALLENGE
FHS first hockey girls participated in the second round of the SPAR Hockey Knock-Out Challenge
at Rhenish in Stellenbosch.
The first game was played
against Rustenberg. After a
shaky start and going 1 goal
down, our girls pulled it
together with a gutsy
performance and beat them 2
: 1. An excellent short corner
resulted in the winning goal.
Both goals were scored by
Teagan Crament.
After this great win, we
progressed to the next round
where we played against
Pinelands. Again, Fairmont
showed some guts and
brilliant skills to beat
Pinelands 1 : 0. Teagan
Crament scored the winner.
The 1st
team has progressed to the quarter finals of the KnockOut competition which will be held in
August.

Daniel van der Walt Gr. 8
Daniel participated in the third round of the South African Mountain Biking (MTB) Cross Country Cup
Series in Nelspruit. Daniel came second on a course featuring some spectacular jumps. With three of the
four rounds complete Daniel has an unassailable lead in the Series after his wins in Port Elizabeth and
Pretoria. Daniel also recently won the Western Province MTB Cup Series after wins in Paarl and
Somerset West. He maintains his number one ranking in South Africa.
13) PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Seven weeks remain before the end of term. In this time, the focus remains on our academic
programme. June exams commence in three weeks for our grades 10 – 12, and four weeks remain
before our grade 8’s and 9’s commence their exams.
This weekend we are taking part in the Bergvliet Sports Day. I encourage and invite our parents to join
us at Fairmont this Saturday to enjoy the various fixtures.
