PLEASE NOTE!
All pupils are required to be at school at the regular time - 07h55 - even if they are not writing a
test. This time will be used for consolidation or tasks organized by various subject departments.
All parents are asked to please be aware that when your child misses a Monday or a Thursday
test, a relevant chemist slip (the date on the slip must pertain to the pupil’s absenteeism and
medication bought), a certificate from the clinic or a doctor’s certificate is required. A medical
certificate from either the clinic or the doctor is applicable for missing any exam. A note from you
excusing your child from school for the days missed is also required.
Grade 9 and Matric pupils must produce a doctor’s certificate for tests and exams missed as
these are the two exit phases and their marks are externally moderated by the Education
Department.
Learners are not allowed to go home immediately after a test if they are ill. They have to stay until
first break. If they are ill, then they should not come to school. A doctor’s certificate will be
required.

6) FAIRMONT GIRLS’ CHOIR
The Fairmont Girls’ Choir had a rehearsal at The Settlers High School in preparation for the
Cultural Contact last Wednesday, 22 July 2015.
Our choristers did us proud. Well done ladies!
7) ITALY CULTURAL TOUR 2015
On Sunday, 12 July 2015, a very excited group of 17 learners, along with Mrs Lourens and Mr Dill,
met at Cape Town International airport to embark on the first ever Fairmont cultural tour to an
overseas country. The group flew via Istanbul to Fiumicino International Airport in Rome. The
group saw many sites of historic, cultural and academic interest over 5 days in Rome and 4 in
Florence. There was also a day trip to Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius.
The group was accompanied by expert English speaking guides on every excursion, learnt a great
deal, and had many exciting and unique experiences despite the extreme heat wave that Italy was
experiencing. Temperatures soared to 37º and higher each day. Water was in constant demand
and the cool respite of the air-conditioned hotel rooms and a shower were a welcome break in the
late afternoons before supper.
Sites visited in Rome included: The Roman Forum, the Colosseum, the Capitoline Hill, the Spanish
Steps, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, the Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel as well as St
Peter’s Basilica.
Before departing for Florence, the group enjoyed a day trip to Naples to visit the ruins of Pompeii
and to climb Mount Vesuvius. Only three intrepid members of the group braved the 40º heat to
climb to the rim of the crater – Shannon Misplon, Joshua Webb and Mr Dill.
On Saturday, 18 July, the group departed by bus for the beautiful city of Florence. The narrow
streets, abundant street cafes and gelato shops proved very popular with the group. Shopping in
the many little shops was high on the priority list despite the heat. The group visited Florence
Cathedral, the Ponte Vecchio, the Mathematics museum at the Garden of Archimedes, the statue
of David at the Academia, the Piti Palace and the Boboli Gardens, as well as the Galileo Museum.
On 22 July the group sadly bid farewell to Florence and travelled by bus back to Rome to catch the
flight back to Cape Town. After 1½ days of travel it was a bit of a shock to the system going from
the 40º heat in Rome to 14º back home!
This was a hugely successful tour and we hope to make it a regular item on the Fairmont calendar
in the future.
8) LIBRARIAN’S CHOICE
THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN
by Paula Hawkins
EVERY DAY THE SAME
Rachel catches the same commuter train every morning. She
knows it will wait at the same signal each time, overlooking a
row of back gardens.
She’s even started to feel like she knows the people who live in
one of the houses. ‘Jess and Jason’, she calls them. Their life-
as she sees it- is perfect. If only Rachel could be that happy.
UNTIL TODAY
And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until
the train moves on, but its enough.
Now everything’s changed. Now Rachel has a chance to
become a part of the lives she’s only watched from afar.
Now they’ll see: she’s much more than just the girl on the
train…..

Annual Production 2015
Deadly devious

12 & 13 AUGUST – R40 PER TICKET
14 AUGUST – GALA EVENING R100 PER TICKET
The housekeepers and butlers of an upper-class neighbourhood of East Village are shaken to
the core when they, together with their employers, become the suspects of a heinous murder.
They are all impressed and uncomfortable to be forced into the limelight. They conduct their
own investigation – mainly by satirically commenting and analysing the nature of their
employers’ characters and lifestyles.
This satire pokes fun with various stereotypes whilst the detective desperately tries to solve
the crime. As an outsider, his task is almost impossible and he finds it difficult to infiltrate this
closely knit community to get to the facts and find what has truly happened.

21) WELL DONE
James Burness Gr. 9
Update from the SA team in China.
The SA Team spent the first couple of days in Beijing – incredibly hot and humid! They climbed
the Great Wall of China which James says was the most tiring thing he’s ever done! They visited
Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City which he said was amazing, and also saw poor pandas
and polar bears in the Beijing zoo.
On Monday they flew to Changchun – the host city for the China International Mathematics
Competition – where they stayed in hostels at the Jilin University. The qualifying children
(including James) wrote the South African Maths Olympiad Final Round paper on Tuesday. He
said it was hard and made his brain feel as if it would explode!!
They wrote the actual IMC exam yesterday morning whilst we in South Africa were all still sleeping!
The group was exhausted by the time they were all done, and then they were off to perform their
South African dance at the Cultural Evening.
Qaylah McCabe Gr. 8
Qaylah took part in, the SADF’s (South African Dance
Federation) Regional and Social Competition.
She danced in 3 sections, receiving 3 trophies and 10 gold
medals after finishing in first place in each section.
Well done, Qaylah!
Kelly Vroon Gr. 10
Kelly recently took part in the SA Youth Long Course championships.
Her results are as follows:
200m Freestyle 1st
400m Freestyle 3rd
200m Backstroke 3rd
100m Freestyle 3rd
50m Freestyle 3rd
Congratulations Kelly!

Fairmont Focus: 23

  • 1. CIRCULAR NO. 23 30 July 2015 Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s) “THERE IS ALWAYS A WAY - IF YOU’RE COMMITTED.” Anthony Robbins Fairmont rugby team warming up before their game on Saturday against The Settlers High School.
  • 2. 1) ACADEMICS Thank you to all parents who attended the Academic Consultative evenings on Monday and Tuesday of this week. Support plans for those pupils experiencing academic difficulties will be put in place to assist them this term. • 6. 7) ITALY CULTURAL TOUR 2015 On Sunday, 12 July 2015, a very excited group of 17 learners, along with Mrs Lourens and Mr Dill, met at Cape Town International airport to embark on the first ever Fairmont cultural tour to an overseas country. The group flew via Istanbul to Fiumicino International Airport in Rome. The group saw many sites of historic, cultural and academic interest over 5 days in Rome and 4 in Florence. There was also a day trip to Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius. The group was accompanied by expert English speaking guides on every excursion, learnt a great deal, and had many exciting and unique experiences despite the extreme heat wave that Italy was experiencing. Temperatures soared to 37º and higher each day. Water was in constant demand and the cool respite of the air-conditioned hotel rooms and a shower were a welcome break in the late afternoons before supper. Sites visited in Rome included: The Roman Forum, the Colosseum, the Capitoline Hill, the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, the Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel as well as St Peter’s Basilica. Before departing for Florence, the group enjoyed a day trip to Naples to visit the ruins of Pompeii and to climb Mount Vesuvius. Only three intrepid members of the group braved the 40º heat to climb to the rim of the crater – Shannon Misplon, Joshua Webb and Mr Dill. On Saturday, 18 July, the group departed by bus for the beautiful city of Florence. The narrow streets, abundant street cafes and gelato shops proved very popular with the group. Shopping in the many little shops was high on the priority list despite the heat. The group visited Florence Cathedral, the Ponte Vecchio, the Mathematics museum at the Garden of Archimedes, the statue of David at the Academia, the Piti Palace and the Boboli Gardens, as well as the Galileo Museum. On 22 July the group sadly bid farewell to Florence and travelled by bus back to Rome to catch the flight back to Cape Town. After 1½ days of travel it was a bit of a shock to the system going from the 40º heat in Rome to 14º back home! This was a hugely successful tour and we hope to make it a regular item on the Fairmont calendar in the future.
  • 7. 8) LIBRARIAN’S CHOICE THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN by Paula Hawkins EVERY DAY THE SAME Rachel catches the same commuter train every morning. She knows it will wait at the same signal each time, overlooking a row of back gardens. She’s even started to feel like she knows the people who live in one of the houses. ‘Jess and Jason’, she calls them. Their life- as she sees it- is perfect. If only Rachel could be that happy. UNTIL TODAY And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but its enough. Now everything’s changed. Now Rachel has a chance to become a part of the lives she’s only watched from afar. Now they’ll see: she’s much more than just the girl on the train…..

  • 9. 10) ANNUAL PRODUCTION 2015 : DEADLY DEVIOUS DOMESTICATION Annual Production 2015 Deadly devious domestication 12 & 13 AUGUST – R40 PER TICKET 14 AUGUST – GALA EVENING R100 PER TICKET The housekeepers and butlers of an upper-class neighbourhood of East Village are shaken to the core when they, together with their employers, become the suspects of a heinous murder. They are all impressed and uncomfortable to be forced into the limelight. They conduct their own investigation – mainly by satirically commenting and analysing the nature of their employers’ characters and lifestyles. This satire pokes fun with various stereotypes whilst the detective desperately tries to solve the crime. As an outsider, his task is almost impossible and he finds it difficult to infiltrate this closely knit community to get to the facts and find what has truly happened. Tickets on sale from 27 July at the payments office!

The SA Team spent the first couple of days in Beijing – incredibly hot and humid! They climbed the Great Wall of China which James says was the most tiring thing he’s ever done! They visited Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City which he said was amazing, and also saw poor pandas and polar bears in the Beijing zoo. On Monday they flew to Changchun – the host city for the China International Mathematics Competition – where they stayed in hostels at the Jilin University. The qualifying children (including James) wrote the South African Maths Olympiad Final Round paper on Tuesday. He said it was hard and made his brain feel as if it would explode!! They wrote the actual IMC exam yesterday morning whilst we in South Africa were all still sleeping! The group was exhausted by the time they were all done, and then they were off to perform their South African dance at the Cultural Evening.
