2. 1) ACADEMICS
Today marks the end of our 3rd
week at school this year. In these 3 weeks the school has
been extremely busy. To-date the majority of our textbooks have been processed, our testing
programme begins next week, our first cricket games have resulted in some good wins, and
the athletics program is making good progress.
Next Friday, 13 February, is our Inter-schools’ athletics meeting in Stellenbosch. Details of
this event will be published for the information of parents.
Our for this year will be sent to parents in its full format as an email pdf
attachment.
We are thrilled to hear that a third matric from 2014 has been admitted to Medical.

3) GRADE 12 ACADEMIC EVENING
Parents and pupils of Grade 12 are asked to please diarise this important
meeting which takes place in the Clive Wigg Hall on Tuesday, 17 February
2015, at 18h30. There will be talks from Stellenbosch, UCT, UWC and
CPUT.
4) SOCIETIES
Society signup took place today. The official time slot for Society meetings is Tuesdays from
14h30 to 15h30. The first Society meeting commences on Tuesday, 10 February 2015.
We at Fairmont strive to offer every student the opportunity to expand their potential in a field
other than that of the scholastic perspective.
Our activities are innovative and not only will they have an impact on the learner’s self-
awareness and self-esteem, but they will also bear fruit outside of the school portals.

3. INTERACT – Lend a helping hand! Here your focus will be on assisting the less
privileged in our community and also creating an awareness of the social problems
they face.
GRAPEVINE – Read all about it! Join the team who produces the school
newspaper. Aspiring young journalists and photographers required.
PUBLIC SPEAKING - What’s your view? Members not only focus on debating
issues, but also on learning public speaking skills and building confidence, self-
esteem and self-image.
SOUND AND LIGHTING – Lights, action! Develop your talents and skills to
effectively facilitate and host functions along with providing a service to the school
for their events or assemblies.
DANCING – Move to the beat! Learn how to dance, improve co-ordination,
rhythm, confidence and creativity.
HOSPITALITY – A function is on the cards! Acquire the skills and knowledge of
events planning, table etiquette and hosting.
PHOTOGRAPHY – Smile! Learn how to capture those special moments from
behind the lens.
GREEN - Recycle! Reduce! Re-use! A society that creates an awareness around
energy saving, preserving natural resources, litter on school grounds, sustainable
developments (Green buildings) and letting waste work for you.
DRAMA – Take your cue! An alternative to the Annual Production for those who
are interested in the performing arts.
CHOIR – Let your voice be heard! A platform enabling students to perform
together to develop their singing abilities as individuals and also as a group to
represent Fairmont in various settings.
M5 – Let your light shine! Here learners are encouraged to live out their Christian
faith and in so doing, to be an encouragement to one another and to demonstrate
the love of Jesus Christ at Fairmont and in the community.
ADVENTURE – Ready for anything! Pack your bags! Participate in various
adventure events.
FILM AND THEATRE APPRECIATION – Have you seen? Attend and discuss
theatre productions and films.
LITERARY – In other words! Here pupils improve their creative writing skills and
also focus on English literature appreciation.
JSE INVESTMENT CHALLENGE – It’s all about the Bulls and the Bears! The
learners are introduced to the world of investing: trade, stockbroking, the JSE,
interaction with business, and so forth.
FASHION – Project runway! Investigate trends in the fashion industry from a
design prospective.
SCIENCE – How does it work? Learners acquire knowledge of natural
phenomena through investigation and experimentation.

4. LEADERSHIP – Lead the way! The focus is developing leadership skills and
styles.
WILDLIFE - Wildlife study and photography.
Learners are encouraged to join a Society of their choice.

PLEASE NOTE!
All pupils are required to be at school at the regular time - 07h55 - even if they are not writing
a test. This time will be used for consolidation or tasks organized by various subject
departments.
All parents are asked to please be aware that when your child misses a Monday or a
Thursday test, a relevant chemist slip (the date on the slip must pertain to the pupil’s
absenteeism and medication bought), a certificate from the clinic or a doctor’s certificate is
required. A medical certificate from either the clinic or the doctor is applicable for missing
any exam. A note from you excusing your child from school for the days missed is also
required.
Grade 9 and Matric pupils must produce a doctor’s certificate for tests and exams missed
as these are the two exit phases and their marks are externally moderated by the Education
Department.
Learners are not allowed to go home immediately after a test if they are ill. They have to
stay until first break. If they are ill, then they should not come to school. A doctor’s
certificate will be required.

8) LONG DISTANCE INTER-SCHOOLS EVENT
Kindly note that the date for the long distance event for Inter-schools is going to be on
Thursday, 12 February 2015 (the day before the Inter-schools athletic event), and NOT on
Wednesday, 11 February 2015.

7. 9) LOST PROPERTY
Please ensure that all school clothes, especially blazers and jerseys, are clearly marked with
your child’s name and surname. All unmarked items will remain in lost property for one

Father Odran Yates is a good man. Dedicated to his vocation since
entering Clonliffe College seminary at seventeen, he has lived through
betrayal, controversy and public condemnation of some of his dearest
friends. Through all of this, he has remained firm in his belief.
But something plagues his mind as the years pass. A feeling that there
were things he didn’t see, chances he missed. People he has let down. Is
Father Yates as blameless as he’s always thought himself to be? And what
of the Church he has given his life to?

THANK YOU to the enthusiastic Parent Forum members and Grade 8 parents who joined us
last Saturday for our first work party of the year. All Grade 8 parents were invited to come
along to this work party / bring-and-braai as an early opportunity to get to meet other families
in the grade. We separated into work groups to tackle some much needed general clean-up
and maintenance around the Astro, basketball and tennis courts. The scale of the tasks was
somewhat daunting, but we were proud of the results of our efforts at the end of the morning,
and then enjoyed our much needed boerie rolls and drinks around the braai!

12. We will hold another work party / bring-and-braai on Saturday, 14 March. This time we will
be building new bench tables for the quads. Please diarise this date and come along and
join the fun while doing something practical to improve our children’s school! All Fairmont
families welcome!

THANK YOU to the parents who signed up for their My School Cards at the New Parent’s Evening
on 27 January, as well as to the ‘old’ parents who use their My School cards to raise money for our
school each month. In the month of December 2014, Fairmont earned almost R10,000 from My
School! 
Let’s increase that this month! Please make sure that you have a MySchool card, (a family may
have more than one card, so please get a card for your husband, sister, mother, great aunt, etc),
that Fairmont is a beneficiary on your cards, and that you swipe your card whenever you are at a
partner outlet. It is easy fundraising for our school!

14. 18) DRUMMIE ASSISTANT COACH REQUIRED
We are in need of the assistance of someone with either a drummie
background, dancing or choreography experience to assist our drummie
coach.
Practice times are:

19) SWIMMING PRACTICE
Our swimmers are doing swimming practice at The Paarl
Special School in Brackenfell until our pool is ready.
20) TENNIS TOURNAMENT AT BOLAND LANDBOU SCHOOL
Our U15 boys tennis are on their way to play in the Boland U/15 Tennis tournament for the
2nd
year in a row. We will leave school on Friday, 13 February, to play against schools like
Marlow, Outeniqua, Somerset College, St Andrews Grahamstown, Midstream Gauteng,
Stellenbosch and Menlo Park.
Coach Martin Redelinghuys and Mrs van Zyl will accompany them.
The tournament will run over 2 days and finish on Saturday afternoon.
Good luck to Braydon Smits, Matthew Serra, James Burness, Reece Klopper, Kyle Harrison,
Ryan van Toorn and Shaqeel Gamieldien.

15. 21) FAIRMONT BOYS’ & GIRLS’ HOCKEY
Fairmont hockey has hit the ground running this year as we look to improve on what was a
great season for both boys and girls in 2014.
The Girls Indoor Hockey league got under way on Wednesday last week as Fairmont hosted
both Tableview High School and Wynberg Girls High. It was a fantastic start to the season
as the girls produced some top class hockey despite being a bit rusty from a long December
holiday. All in all, we played 8 games, won 4, drew 1 and lost 3. A special mention must be
made of the 8th team (Grade 8 players) who ended up winning one of their matches 12 : 1.
Julia Hoal scored 6 goals, while Lynda Portelli scored 4. The Fairmont Hockey Family
extend a warm welcome to all the Grade 8 Indoor players!

fitness training got under way on Monday morning and will continue throughout February.
A warm welcome to the U/14 boys who have become a part of the Fairmont Hockey Family.

22) FAIRMONT CRICKET RESULTS : SATURDAY, 31 JANUARY 2015
Overall, this was a very satisfactory start to the 2015 Cricket season. Our 1sts,
U15As and U14As had big wins, while our 2nd team put up a spirited team effort
against a very strong Bellville High team.
1st Team: Fairmont made 232/10 in 49.4 overs. A good opening
partnership by Kyle de Wet (51) and Reagan Brandon (31) set
the tone.
Edgemead were bowled out in 27 overs for 88 runs. After
Marc Crous (2/100 had bowled out both opening batsmen, the
spinners Jason Vermaak (4/4) and Liam Witten (2/10)
completed the damage.
Result: Fairmont won by 144 runs.
2nd Team: Bellville made 282/5 in their 45 overs. Best bowling was by
James Daly (3/42).
Fairmont made 62/10 in 23 overs, with Jarryd Curran making
21 runs.
Result: Fairmont lost by 220 runs
U15A Team: Fairmont made 249/9 in their 50 overs with Keenan Opperman
(57), Cameron Sinclair (33) and Gareth Jones (32) being the
main scorers.
Edgemead made 73/10 in 24 overs, with Keenan Opperman
(3/11) being the best at the bowling.
Result: Fairmont won by 176 runs
U14A Team: Westerford made 106/10 in 29 overs, with Ethan Sevenoaks
(4/28) the best of the bowling.
Fairmont made 110/2 in 21 overs, with Theodor Demasius
scoring 51 not out.
Result: Fairmont won by 8 wickets

The aim of this course is for
students to learn, practice and become equipped with the necessary skills to become
unstoppable in pursuing their dreams.
Students acquire outer grooming skills that will enable them to feel more confident about
their appearance.

 An in depth make-up lesson
 Body shape analysis with advice on clothing styles

Please note:
- Minimum booking 8 children, Maximum 16
- Ages: 7-18
- We supply all the ingredients, chef hats and plastic aprons (aprons: R80 each)
- Duration of the classes: 2 hours
- Times: 10:00-12:00 or 13:30-15:30
- Supply own cooldrinks
