FRIDAY, 13 FEBRUARY 2015
Photo. acknowledgement: Google images
Information for Parents, Athletes and Pupil Spectators
Tomorrow, 13 February, our school will be travelling to Coetzenburg in Stellenbosch to take part in
the 2015 Inter-School athletic’s meeting. This will be a first experience at Coetzenburg for our
school and we hope to have a wonderful day.
Please find below the information you need to know for the day. If there are any further queries,
please contact the school. We are requiring that all pupils travel to and from the stadium on
Fairmont arranged transport so that we can keep a tight control on the transport arrangements.
Parents who wish to travel to and from the stadium may travel in convoy with the buses. The
moment we make travel concessions for one pupil and that pupil offers a lift to another, the
situation could result in us losing transport control. Each pupil will be allocated to a bus and an
embarking checklist, both at school and the stadium, will be conducted.
Tickets for parents will be available at the stadium at a cost of R10 per adult and R5 for U18
visitors. Pupils who are attending the function on the day enter free. We kindly request that pupils
who have indicated that they will not be attending the athletics day, do NOT arrive on the day at
the Coetzenburg track. This will be closely monitored at the gate.
INFORMATION FOR ATHLETES:
Athletes must wear the new athletics vest with green shorts (any tights worn in addition to the
shorts must be the Fairmont green tights).
There will be a uniform check (no make-up, jewelry, girls MUST tie up hair, boys must be
shaven) before athletes board the bus.
Register at 05h30 at school with Ms Phillips and the relevant age group manager/s in the main
parking area in front of the school.
4. Parents of athletes please note that the front parking area will be out of bounds for drop-off of
athletes after 05h30. No cars will be allowed to enter the front gate after 05h30 to facilitate the
departure and boarding of buses. To avoid traffic congestion en route to Stellenbosch, ALL
buses must depart Fairmont High school soon after 05h30 for athletes and 06h30 for
spectators.
The day at Coetzenburg will end at approximately 16h00. Please arrange to fetch your
children from school at 17h30. This time is subject to traffic flow. Please keep in contact with
your children for updates on their arrival time on their way home.
Arrival at Coetzenburg: After entering the stadium – athletes must report to the relevant
athlete gathering point on the embankment (staff members will direct you to the athlete area).
Athletes will march onto the track at 09h40.

duration of attendance at the stadium is a consentual undertaking by the parent and or legal
guardian of their child/ward.

to be at school.
Various district and provincial athletic events for those athletes who will be selected for the trials

Team vs Chesterhouse
After bowling out Chesterhouse for 129 runs, Fairmont seemed well set with the score at 118/2.
However, cricket is a funny game and Fairmont lost their remaining 8 wickets for just 4 runs to lose
a game that Fairmont should never have lost.
Scores: Chesterhouse 129/10 (Michael Laros 4/18, Ayden van Eeden 2/28)
Fairmont 122/10 (Ayden Poole 33, Kyle de Wet 30)
Result: Fairmont lost by 7 runs
1st
Team vs DF Malan (Quarter-final match in the North Zone Knockout Competition)
Fairmont won the toss and put DF Malan in to bat. Much improved bowling and captaincy saw
DF Malan bowled out in their 30 overs for 123 runs. Fairmont bastmen were soon in trouble and,
at 36/6, it looked like another batting collapse would cost them the quarter final match in the
competition which they had won for the 1st
time last year. But some splendid batting by Michael
Laros and Ryan Chedburn who added 54 runs for an unbeaten 8th
wicket partnership saw Fairmont
parents and supporters leap for joy (and relief!) that their boys had brought off a memorable
victory.
Scores: DF Malan 123/10 (Ayden Poole 3/25, Michael Laros 2/18 in 6 overs,
Marc Crous 2/23)
Fairmont 125/8 (Michael Laros 40 not out, Ryan Chedburn 32 not out
in 19 balls)
Result: Fairmont won by 2 wickets with 4 balls to spare
2nd
Team vs Stellenberg 2nd
Team
After winning the toss, Fairmont scored 130/9 in their allotted 25 overs. This was a much improved
performance in which 6 bastmen reached double figures. Stellenberg scored the winning runs in
21 overs.
Scores: Fairmont 130/9 (Evan May 26, Aiden Abegglen 26)
Stellenberg 131/3
Result: Fairmont lost by 7 wickets
11. U15A vs a Combined Chesterhouse/El Shaddah/Durbanville CC U16 Team
Fairmont won the toss and put the opposition in to bat. In the final over, the combined team were
all out for 238. Fairmont began slowly against some hostile, accurate bowling. However, excellent
batting by Braydon Smith, Cameron Sinclair and Gareth Jones at the top end of the batting order
saw Fairmont win with 6 overs to spare in this 50-over encounter.
Scores: Combined Team 238 (Gareth Jones 4/36, Andrew Reeve 2/29, Kaegan
Smith 2/31)
Fairmont 241/4 (Braydon Smith 84, Cameron Sinclair 33, Gareth
Jones 33)
Result: Fairmont won by 6 wickets
U15B vs Milnerton U15B
Fairmont batted first and scored 104/7 in their allotted 21 overs. Milnerton then scored 107/5,
thanks to the large number of wides bowled by Fairmont.
Scores: Fairmont 104/7 (Dylan Christians 23)
Milnerton 107/5
Result: Milnerton won by 5 wickets
U14A vs DF Malan at DF Malan
Fairmont batted first and, after being 8/2 and thanks to fine batting by Aaron Smit, Nathan Rose-
Innes and Stuart Mellors, Fairmont posted a creditable 190/10 in their 40 overs.
DF Malan reached 62/3 after 15 overs, but chasing a further 129 runs in 25 overs proved too much
as they lost 4 wickets through run outs, giving Fairmont U14A’s another big win.
Scores: Fairmont 190/10 (Aaron Smit 79, Nathan Rose-Innes 22, Stuart
Mellors 22)
DF Malan 99/10
Result: Fairmont won by 91 runs
U14B vs Curro postponed to Thursday, 12 February due to wet pitch
10) COUNSELLOR’S CORNER
Sexuality and Education
As part of the CAPS curriculum for Life Orientation in the Senior Phase (Grade 8 and 9), one of the
topics to be covered this term will be sexuality, sexual behaviour and sexual health. The Grade 9
learners will be required to do an assignment to cover these topics.
We would like to make parents aware of this to ensure security settings on home computers are
up-to-date when the teens do research on these topics. This will also be the perfect opportunity to
have that long postponed talk with your teen about sexuality and your norms and values.
"...For those of us with teenagers, our job of communicating, informing, advising and debating
never ends. No matter how many 'Eeeh yikes, I don't want to hear about that!' we get, until we can
be certain that our message has got through, we should never give up on such talks. We cannot
be there with them 24/7 – so all we're left with is the power of words that can hopefully trigger
responsible thoughts and actions.
As one dad says: 'Sow the seed of knowledge to germinate the seed of restraint, rather than
having the seed of regret sown by ignorance.' " – Life Talk for Parents by Isabella Little & Thomas
Burkhalter, 2008.

PHILIDA
by ANDRÉ BRINK
Philida is the mother of four children by Francois Brink,
the son of her master. The year is 1832 and the Cape is
rife with rumours about the liberation of the
slaves. Philida decides to risk her whole life by lodging a
complaint against Francois, who has reneged on his
promise to set her free.
His father has ordered him to marry a white woman from
a prominent Cape Town family, and Philida will be sold on
to owners in the harsh country up North. Unwilling to
accept this fate, Philida continues to test the limits of her
freedom, and with the Muslim slave Labyn she sets off on
a journey across the great wilderness on the banks of the
Gariep River, to the far north of Cape Town.
Philida is the unforgettable story of one woman’s
determination to survive and be free.
