2. Who is Ferdinand Mahfood?
• Ferdinand Mahfood is one of four brothers of Lebanese
extraction, and was involved in the import-export business
between Jamaica and the United States.
• In 1980, Ferdinand underwent a religious conversion and he
became determined to help the destitute in Jamaica.
• So, Ferdinand founded the non-profit organization Food For
The Poor Inc. with the help of his other three other brothers,
Robin, Joseph and Samuel Mahfood.
3. History of Food For The Poor Inc
• Founded in 1982 by Ferdinand Mahfood
• He collected funds from North American and
European benefactors soon after establishing the
organization.
• Throughout the 1980s, FFP expanded its scope to not
only help those in Jamaica but also those around the
Latin American and Caribbean region
• In addition to food, FFP also began to ship medical
supplies, equipment and educational materials

• In 2000, Ferdinand stepped down as President of FFP,
and is succeeded by his brother, Robin Mahfood
• By 2003, FFP had grown to become the largest relief
organization in the Caribbean and the third largest
charity in the United States.
5. Impact of Food For The Poor Inc.
• FFP provided agricultural assistance to
independent farmers in the 1980s, to allow
farmers to better manage crops and increase
yield.
• FFP provided assistance in the form of food to
Haiti
• FFP was also part of the U.S. presidential
programme 416B which shipped surplus food
from the United States to developing countries,
alleviating hunger and malnutrition.
6. Impact of Food For The Poor
• Parents under community aid in developing
countries were taught proper nutrition and feeding
habits for their families.
