Editor's Notes

  1. Liwayway is a leading Tagalog weekly magazine published in the Philippines since 1922. It contains Tagalog serialized novels, short stories, poetry, serialized comics, essays, news features, entertainment news and articles, and many others. In fact, it is the oldest Tagalog magazine in the Philippines.
  2. “Jingle is a songbook-magazine with emphasis on guitar chords. It is dedicated to the proposition that young people deserve good entertainment. Jingle is carefully prepared to suit the interest of students, young professionals and the not-so-young, who, in times like this, need a new, creative and exciting outlet.”
  3. Comics in the Philippines (Filipino: Komiks) have been widespread and popular throughout the country from the 1920s to the present. Komiks were partially inspired by American mainstream comic strips and comic books during the early 20th century. The medium first became widely popular after World War II.
  4. Is a Canadian-American comic book artist best known for co-creating the DC Comics character Superman, with Jerry Siegel, in Action Comics #1 (cover-dated June 1938). Shuster was involved in a number of legal battles over ownership of the Superman character. His comic book career after Superman was relatively unsuccessful, and by the mid-1970s, Shuster had left the field completely due to partial blindness.
  5. Francisco "Kenkoy" Harabas is a Philippine comics character created by writer Romualdo Ramos and cartoonist and illustrator Tony Velasquez in 1929. Velazquez continued the strip for decades after Ramos' death in 1932. Kenkoy was seminal to Philippine comics and thus Velasquez is considered the founding father of the industry. The term kenkoy has entered the Filipino language to mean a joker, jester, or a hilarious person
  6. In 1946, the first regularly published all-comic-magazine was born, the short-lived Halakhak Komiks. Halakhak lasted only ten issues, perhaps due to the lack of an efficient distribution system. The company went broke and Halakhak was closed down. In 1947, Don Ramon Roces and Tony Velasquez started Ace Publications, a komiks publishing house that published komik books: Pilipino Komiks in 1947, Tagalog Klasiks in 1949, Hiwaga Komiks in 1950, Espesyal Komiks in 1952, Kenkoy Komiks in 1959, and Educational Klasiks Komiks in 1962.
  7. Siopawman was a Filipino comedic superhero. It was also the title of the first comic strip created by Filipino cartoonist Lauro "Larry" Zarate Alcala after World War II. Siopawman first appeared in Halakhak Komiks in 1947. Siopawman was described as a “Superman parody”.
  8. Mars Ravelo was one of the most successful Filipino comic artists. He was the creator of the famous superheroine 'Darna', and the highest paid comic artist of his time. After World War II, Ravelo realized the Filipinos were in need of a superhero. He created the heroic superheroine 'Varga' in Bulaklak magazine in 1947. Ravelo left the magazine two years later, and had to leave his character behind. So, upon joining Pilipino Komiks in 1949, he rebuilt 'Varga' to 'Darna'.
  9. ROSA DEL ROSARIO 1951 LIZA MORENO 1963
  10. 1977 1969 1973
