2. Introduction
Action Against Hunger is a non-government organisation founded in 1979 by a group of French intellectuals in
response to the emergency in Afghanistan. They now provide assistance for the poor countries, warring countries and
countries that suffered from natural disasters in terms of food, safe water, sanitation. The founding members of the
group are the following:

• Why do they help?
1. About 795 million people go to bed hungry every night, becoming one of the leading cause of
death
2. Many children are suffering from hunger and malnutrition
3. But a mere $45 is enough to save a child’s life!
• How do they help?
1. 93% of donated funds are used for programmes with the remaining 7% for management etc.
2. Providing the poor with food, funds and ensure crops can be grown
3. Building water points
4. Evaluate emergency procedures for countries suffering from natural disasters
• Are they reliable?
1. Highest four-star rating from Charity Navigator, 10 years in a row
2. Listed as an ‘A’-rated organisation by CharityWatch
3. Meeting 20 Business Bureau standards
4. Received the Guidestar’s Gold participant seal
5. Awarded “Best in America” seal by the independent Charities of America
4. Contribution Made part 1
- The organisation pioneered the use of therapeutic milk (F100) on severe acute malnutrition , now
used by all major human aid organisations to treat acute malnutrition.
- As a result global mortality rate of malnourished children under the age of five has been reduced
from 25 % to 5 %
5. Contribution Made part 2
- They built 59 water points in 7 villages in Kivu Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
- They involved the community there in the construction of the water points to allow the community to
learn for future use.
- By doing so, many people have been saved from hunger and dehydration.
