6. Evaluation
I have chosen to not create an advert in my project due to the
fact that I feel that this option offers me the least creative
freedom of all of the projects. This is due to the fact that
whatever I make must ultimately be tied to a project and that if I
am to create a more creative trailer I run the risk of my advert
losing it's links to the product. Some adverts of course are far
more plot driven and tend to not explicitly focus around a product
an example of this would be the John Lewis “Man on the moon”
Christmas advert however i feel that the success of this advert
was largely due to the family friendly and festive narrative of the
advert which is not in keeping with the cinematic style which I am
aiming to produce which is more alternative or indie in
appearance.
8. Concept 1- Teen Drama
• Shots of teens having fun e.g.
pool party, bonfire, sleepover
etc.
• Close up shot of various
characters with voice over of
main character explaining who
they are.
• Shot of main character voice
over “this is me and this is the
story of how I died”.
9. Concept 2- Horror Film

• A voice starts to sing a childlike rhyme
the last words are “what will you do
when the lights go out”.
• The final candle is blown out and the
audience hears screams.
• Hand held camera shots can be seen
of the teens running in fear before the
camera is dropped and childlike
laughing is heard.
10. Concept 3- Comedy

took place the summer before.
• Camera pulls back to the protagonist laying on
a therapist’s couch staring at the white cracking
ceiling.
• Voice breaks through the monotonous music.
• “Excuse me sir” says voice off camera.
• Protagonist sits up and is not infact lying on a
therapists couch but is sitting on a couch in a
furniture showroom.
• Protagonist walks out of showroom whilst
lighting a cigarette and offers one to the person
who's POV is displayed in the camera and says
to them well I suppose I should tell you what
happened last summer.
• Screen cuts to black.
11. Evaluation
The largest factor for me deciding not to create a film trailer this
year was the fact that last year for my AS project I created the
open sequence for a horror film and I feel that these two tasks
would be too similar in style. I also feel that the fact that trailers
are composed of selected sections of the film (generally
the highlights) in order to make the film appear to the viewers
without giving away large plot points that it would be hard for me
to create a flowing story on screen. Finally I have discounted a
film trailer due to the fact that I feel that the style of lighting and
cinematography which I am choosing to pursue in this project is
most suited to the format of a music video.
13. Concept 1- Youth Subculture
• Shots of youth being wild and
having fun.
• Shots vary from point of view
shots to wide shots.
• Lighting is heavily stylised and
helps to convey the emotions of
the scenes.
• Colouration may include soft
pastels.
• Music video will have a
somewhat grunge appearance.
14. Concept 2- Emotions
• Music video will be shot in the studio.
• The song will have to be extremely
emotive.
• One characters will appear.
• The music video sequence will
symbolise the main characters mind.
• The music video will be shot against
a white backdrop with the possible
use of coloured chalk to add
dimension and help to convey
emotion through colour.
• Lip syncing will likely be employed.
15. Concept 3- Backstage pass
• Somewhat documentary style
music video will follow a bands
process of preparing before a
show.
• Predominately hand held
shots will be used.
• Shots will be taken backstage
as well as from the crows
whilst the band is performing
as well as on stage with the
band.
16. Evaluation
I have decided to create a music video for my A2 project due to the
fact that it is the most flexible of the three projects options. I feel that
this flexibility largely comes from the numerous genres of music
videos, this number of genres means that I would be able to venture
into symbolism to a greater extent than I believe I could effectively
achieve in a film trailer. One of the main icons that I have found
inspiration in is Troye Sivan’s music videos for his album Blue
Neighbourhood as I enjoy the use of colour as well as the
cinematography of his music videos such as “Youth”, I am also
inspired by the originality of Melanie Martinez’s music videos for her as
they link very distinctly to her style and image as an artist. Melanie
Martinez is a particularly interesting artist as all of her branding for
example album artwork, merchandise, lyrics, appearance and music
videos all feature the same surreal yet youthful and childlike style.
