2. AMERICAN
PSYCHO
• American Psycho is an extremely
gruesome psychological thriller
with an age rating of 18. The
reason for it being aimed towards
a more adult demographic, is
because of the disturbing images
displayed throughout the film and
very heavy plot line. This film had
a specific niche and was targeted
at a very limited audience so
there could have been a
possibility that it would go under
the radar as a film, however it
was massively successful.
American Psycho could be seen
as a vital satire of fragile
masculinity which I think could be
one of the reasons that the movie
appealed so well to the female
audience.
3. THE CONJURING
• The Conjuring is another horror/thriller movie that leans
more into the paranormal. This film is also targeted at
teenagers and adults due to its frightening content, meaning
it wouldn’t be suitable for children. The conjuring gets its
appeal from the adrenaline rush people feel when scared, as
well as its interesting plot line and the fact that it is based on
true events.
• Before the release of the film, the production company really
shone light on the fact that it was based on a true story, and
released interviews with the cast to explain some of the
paranormal sightings, as well as releasing images of the
original Perron family who experienced this phenomenon.
This increased interest for the film as people now knew that
it was partially real.
4. SHUTTER ISLAND
• Shutter island has an interesting target audience.
The film is rated a 15 and I personally feel that's
about right. The film isn’t violent but its very
confusing and plays with your brain which is why
the film has such a big appeal. I Think that the film
is targeted at any gender and anyone above the
age of 15 as I think if they were younger, they may
struggle to understand the movie. I think that the
film appeals to women strongly due to Leonardo
Di Caprio being the main lead, and how it is about
a man who lost his family at war and always plays
on his mind. The sad and romantic aspect of that
adds to the attraction for the female gender
stereotypically, however the violence in the movie
could catch the attention of teenage boys and
older men.
5. OUR
TARGET
AUDIENCE
• To work out our target audience, we
conducted a lot of research into similar
movies, mainly the ones I have discussed on
this power point. I feel that our target audience
would be around 14 – 45 and both men and
women. The reason for that age bracket is
that our film, similarly to ‘Shutter Island’, is a
Slow burn psychological thriller and may be
quite confusing to work out if you are too
young. The film is aimed at men and women
as men are typically more subject to
adrenaline rushes which is why they are so
attracted to horror and thriller movies, yet it
also creates and breaks stereotypes for
women and focusses a lot on feminism which
will be a large attraction for women.
6. HOW I
ENGAGED
MY
AUDIENCE
• We really wanted to make sure that we could
keep our audience captivated by our opening
sequence and wanted them to feel as if they
wanted to watch the full movie. One way I
thought of as to how we could achieve this,
was by making our opening sequence a very
tense and gritty scene from the end of the film
when our protagonist is in trouble and cut it
out just at the jump scare in order to leave the
audience on a cliff hanger. I was happy with
how that worked as it had the exact effect that
we’d hoped it would and set the atmosphere
for the rest of the film, as the audience were
waiting for it to get to that point.
7. WAS OUR
AUDIENCE
ENGAGED
?
• After our class had watched our sequence, we
received a lot of good feedback and some good
constructive criticism which I can interpret into my next
sequence I film.
• We were told that our music was really effective and
kept the audience on the edge of their seats.
• The camera angles were unsettling and made them
feel like they were in the protagonists' shoes
• The lighting really added to the eerie atmosphere and
made it more unsettling
• One person said “it felt like you were teasing me,
every time she looked out of the door, I thought there
would be someone there but there wasn’t. I still
jumped even though I knew the jump scare was
coming!”
• The audience really sympathized with the character,
and the camera angles made it seem as if she was
being watched.
8. INTRODUCTION TO DISTRIBUTION
• Distribution is probably the most crucial part in film production. Without
distribution, people can’t watch the film, and people don’t even know
about it in the first place. Some distribution companies are huge empires
with different subsidiaries on top of the main company. Warner Bros has
many different platforms, meaning as soon as they work on a film, it is
heard about very quickly and spread so everyone is aware of the movie's
presence and its release date. Companies with less money are called
limited distributors, which means that they only have access to a limited
amount of platforms, such as blu – ray and DVD which usually means
that the film is far less successful, especially nowadays as its very rare
for people to use DVD or Blu – Ray.
9. DISTRIBUTIO
N COMPANIES • Like an industry there is an oligopoly in
this market. There are many different
distribution companies however only
some of them dominate the industry,
meaning they have the most money, the
most access to platforms and the most
power. Above I have put an image from
the internet of some of the top distribution
companies in the world.
10. MARKETING OUR FILM
• Marketing is extremely crucial in this
industry. Personally, for this film, I would
want to create an idea that it’s a real issue
that happening right now, and that a girl has
gone missing. I would put posters up on
social media and around a busy
commercial area like central London for
example, and maybe put it on billboards,
but I will put in small print that it is
advertisement for a movie in order to make
sure it doesn’t cause any problems. I would
also start a campaign where people go to
different schools and teach do talks about
the dangers of safety online and tell true
stories of people being catfished or stalked,
in order to spread awareness of the issue.
11. DISTRIBUTION FOR OUR FILM
• Considering I have a vertically integrated company
such as Warner Bros or Disney, I would want to
release the movie in cinemas. This is because when a
movie is released in cinemas, people who go to watch
other films will see the trailer for our film, as well as the
fact that watching films in a cinema means that the
audience is much more immersed than they would be
at home. This is because the room is very dark with
surround sound speakers and a huge screen, meaning
the audience are much more captivated and focused
on the movie. After a couple of months of the movie
being only in cinemas, then I would want it to be
released as a rental online so people can have access
to it at all times if they pay.
