Experiments
Emma Garthwaite
Process
We tested with different lights and colour
gels. Me and my model both wanted to
have similar opportunities to play around
with lights just to see how it would look for
an add or an article. Firstly we started with
the blue gel on a single light and that
wasn’t as bright as we wanted it to be. It
really just cooled down the image a little
bit. We then attempted orange gel which
was a lot brighter and a lot easier to see in
the photos. I like this idea for a DPS advert
as I think its too shadow based for an
article page. Lastly we tried both blue and
orange gels on me and the outcome was
really cool. Again id like to use this on an
advert or as a feature photo for an article.
The gels add a very cool unique look to the
photos.
Process
Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you include in your
final product?
With these ideas I think the orange gel photos I would use for a perfume dps
advert where as for the two coloured photos with a different model I would
use these for a featured photo in an article. This is because they’re quite a
specific type of image with the lighting ect. However they are quite different
to the usual photography style in magazines therefore it keep my magazine
different to everything else. Which is what I want to do and as my research
proves its what my audience want to see aswell because if something is the
same as everything else you’re less likely to pick it up in favour to anything
else. This experiment definitely gave me new ideas on ways to keep my
photography unique and different to everything else.
Process
Process
This was a test of natural lighting outside. I wanted to also test with
different models as for everything before hand id been using just
Emily as a model. I wanted to have a selection of various models
rather than using the same type of models throughout the
magazine as I know that can get boring and repetitive which I don’t
want. This also gave me a good idea of how to use the camera
properly outside and focus on the lighting outside and how to ajust
it to look decent and to focus on the model. Such as the third
picture is a lot darker and this was because of the angle it was
taken from and the lighting was changed which gives it a darker
look which isnt really what I wanted therefore that’s why I focused
more on the images with the brighter lighting which worked better
with what I wanted for feature photos within articles.
Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you
include in your final product?
• I really like idea of using the natural lighting shots for adverts and feauture
photos for articles. I am really excited to play around with settings more
on the camera with natural lighting and test more things due to it being so
easy to change natural lighting just by changing the angle or certain
settings. Therefore I think it will be an interesting concept to play around
with it more. I have played about a little for my experiments so I have an
idea of what I want for a final picture in my project. I am going to use this
as a fashion brand advert where as studio shoots im gonna use for things
such as perfume and make up adverts.
Process
This was testing natural lighting again, it was
on two different days and I wanted to see the
difference in lighting day to day. It surprisingly
made quite the difference. This being with
the camera on the same settings and clearly
shows that the lighting will change from day
to day so if using natural lighting I will take all
the photos I need in one day therefore I can
keep the lighting the same and have photos
look similar without having to edit them too
much with the lightings and the levels.
Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you
include in your final product?
• I really like the idea of using shots like this. I love the artwork incorporated
into the picture mixed with the fashion. The photo with the lips chould
definitely be used as a makeup add in my magazine. I think the lighting
will need to be better or the photo brightness and levels will be moved up
a little. Either that or retake it in the studio. I think what I will do is make
the background full of lips to add more to the photo so it isn’t as plain and
maybe make it an advert for a lip plumper advert or a new lipstick range
and I could maybe make the lips on the background different colours if it’s
a lipstick range.
Process
• Within this I have been testing
fonts for my mast head I wanted
something modern but unique. I
really like the first font but I think I
will want to put it into illustrator
and making it bolder and more
square. What I would really like is
almost a mixture between the first
font and the last font therefore I’m
going to look into changing the first
one. I have already added a stroke
to it in photo shop to add some
thickness to it.
Reflection
I definitely think this has been helpful to be able to work out
what fonts work best as mast heads. There was some that didn’t
work such as the third one was too plain and thin to be a mast
head but would maybe work for general text or headings for
articles which is what I’m going to look into next. I think fonts are
important because they catch the eye of the audience which
makes the person remember the name of the magazine.
Therefore I think my choice in font is an important thing when
making a magazine especially the front cover.
Process
This was a test for body test for my
magazine. I wanted something simple
but also readable therefore the first
font wouldn’t work as well as the
other ones due to it being hard to read
and just not looking right. I
experimented with it as a main mast
head and that worked better than it as
block text but not by much. The
second one was something slightly
better but the third one is perfect. Its
easy to read and looks a lot nicer with
everything. I just think the boldness
and spacing is better for reading even
in small print.
Reflection
Looking back at this experiment I definitely think setting out a font before hand can help
or even a similar idea of what you want to use. I think I will definitely either use the third
font or find something very similar and then change it in illustrator for headings possibly.
I think fonts are important not just for mast heads because I feel like if the text is eye
catching the audience is more likely to read the content if it looks easy to read. I think
therefore this is an important thing to experiment with. I wanted to try out different font
because I think sometimes because not a lot of people like reading you have to keep it
interesting and the font is quite a good way to do this in my opinion. I did this
experiment so that when I come to do my work I have a better idea of what I want to do
when it comes to the final project.
