James has learned a lot in progressing from his preliminary task to his full magazine product. He has improved his use of mise-en-scene in shots by considering wardrobe choices and genre. He has also learned how to use lighting better to avoid shadows and focus on his subject. James has incorporated more variety in poses and styles to keep readers interested. He has paid closer attention to layout, fonts, text size and placement to make his magazine more visually appealing and reader-friendly. Overall, James feels the differences between his preliminary task and final magazine show how much he has grown in skills like photography, styling and magazine design.

Learning From Evaluation 7
1. Evaluation 7
Looking back at your preliminary
task what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression from it
to full product?
By James Meadows
2. Mise-en-scene and camera work
Looking back at my preliminary task I can see that I have improved in a lot of
ways. One of these ways is I have improved what mise en scene I use in my
shots I have made sure that I really think about what my artist is wearing
for my shot and I have also made sure that it meets the genre and fits in
well with my final magazine. Also, I have also learnt how to take better
photos and also have more variety in the shots that I take. I have also
realised how important the light is as in my prelim I had some shadows in
my photos, this lets down the whole page of my prelim task. However now I
have used the lighting to my advantage using natural light in some shots,
the shots that I have used artificial light for I have made sure there is
enough to get rid of any shadows in my final photographs. I have learnt how
to focus on to my model to get the best quality photographs and also to
make the photos look professional. I have also made sure that I have my
artist in different poses to give the images a good verity of different styles.
I have also changed the styling of and artist of my magazine to match the
genre from my prelim task as you can see the difference between my
prelim task and my final magazine is massive and also shows how much I
have learnt to be able to make this massive jump from a basic styled
magazine to what I believe to be a very good magazine. I have also learnt
about different poses for my artist too do in the photoshoot, in my prelim
task the poses where very basic but in my final magazine there is a lot more
variety in the shots and gives the reader different styles of images to keep
them interested in the magazine. I have also learnt the importance of
where my artist is looking so on my final magazine I have made sure that my
artist on the front cover is looking directly at the reader. By doing this it
breaks the boundary between the reader and the magazine and gets them
interested in the magazine. it makes it seem like it is addressed to the
reader as the artist is looking directly at the reader. I have made it a lot
clearer where my artist is looking in my final magazine
3. Text
I have also learnt the importance of using different fonts and sizing to make my magazine
look the part and also to make it attract my audience. Going from the prelim task to the
final magazine I have found out what sort of fonts work for my magazine and look
professional. I have also made my magazine have a layout that is common to my target
audience but is very eye catching to draw my audience in. also as you can see on my
prelim task the text looks like it has just been put on the page and no thought about
where it should go has been considered. I have highlighted all of the text that now I have
learnt a lot more about the layouts of magazines I would not be happy with and as you
can see that is basically all of the text on the page also as you can see all of the text is
the same so there is no verity and this makes the magazine look basic and does not get
the attention of people.
However, on my final magazine it looks a lot neater and also the text looks like it should be
where I have placed it as I have done research on other country music magazines so I
know where the text works and also where the text looks the best and stands out to the
reader. Also I have learnt that the main cover line needs to stand out and be the second
biggest piece of text on the page. As you can easily see what the main cover line is as it
is the second biggest text on the page and also due to the bold font that is all in capitals
it really makes it stand out to the reader.
4. backgrounds
I have also learnt what backgrounds work and what don’t and I have also have learnt a lot about what
colour schemes work this is shown just looking at my prelim task compared to my final magazine.
It is clear to see that my final magazine has a colour scheme that works and is easily read and
looks professional, in my prelim task the colour scheme does not look professional and looks tacky
so I believe it does not stand out as well as the one I have chosen to use on my final magazine.
this is my prelim contents page and as you can see the text is too big and also you can see that I have
cropped around the image especially on the book. I have learnt how to crop images a lot better to
make them look a lot more professional. I have also learnt that the important text needs to stand
out more than the rest. As you can see on my final contents page I have also used red text to make
the text that needs to be clear and stand out to the reader do so, I have also put Johnny Davis in
red text to make it clear what page the double page spread on him is on.
