1. THE GENRE RESEARCH
Our group have decided to go for the Drama genre for our short
film.
2. What is a Drama Film:
A drama film is a film genre that depends
mostly on in-depth development of realistic
characters and situations dealing with
emotional themes such as Peer Pressure,
Bullying and Crimes.
Drama can be interlaced with other genres
such as comedy, tragedy, action, etc.
3. Conventions of a Drama Film:
• Conveys real life situations with realistic characters, settings
and stories.
• Conveys the journey which the character takes on and it shows
the development of the characters.
• The purpose of it is to send subtle message and move the
audience emotionally.
• Audience related- Eg: Teenagers can relate to the theme of
Bullying.
• Form of realization at the end that can either be positive or
negative.
• Drama film are mostly based on a true story or shows the
reality of a real life situation that can occur to anyone and gives
out a subtle message about how to deal with the issue.
• It includes climaxes and dramatic scenes to keep the audience
on their sit.
• Sometimes dramas have a twist in the end.
4. Sub-Genres and Hybrid
Our Drama film doesn’t really fit within a sub- genre and it is not a
hybrid, although it contains elements of other genres such as fast
phased running which we will have in our film which is like the action
film and it contains moralistic messages like docudrama.
As a snapshot into our main protagonist’s life she will be battling her
demons. This drama is a tragedy because the main protagonist fails to
overcome her demons that leads her back to her parents house and
become child like. Unlike her friends, she fails to come of age and step
into becoming an adult and fulfilling her dreams.
5. Audience:
• There are many types of Drama so we must be clear about who our
audience is:
• Our target audience are teenagers from age 13-18+. This is the time in a teenage
life where they may face similar issues addressed in our film.
• Our main theme of our drama film is “Peer Pressure” which is one way we are
going to attract our target audience because this issue is something they can
relate to, so they are likely to watch it and with the subtle message our film will
gives, it will ensure that they know how to deal with it if they face the similar
issues after watching our film. This is one of our main aim, it is to get the message
out to our targeted audience.
• Other ways we will attract the audience is through using teenage characters.
Also, we will be careful in the way we decide to represent the characters, for
example, whether they should be represented negatively or positively.
• We will compose our own non diegetic music which will be modern and fast paced
at some point through out the film which will make it more exciting to our
audience. Non diegetic music is not always used but as our audience is
teenagers we will use it to attract them.
8. Codes and Conventions of Short
Films:
• It has 2-3 characters and are portrayed in a short amount of time.
• It contains a twist either Beginning, Middle or End. This makes it
appealing to the audience as they become unaware of the twist and
when it occurs it creates the feeling of excitement and desperation to
find out more. Thus it keeps the audience interested.
• They can also be moralistic which fits with our film.
• The storylines are set in everyday setting and this helps audience
relate to the film and it makes them look forward to the climax or
resolution of the situation.
• It uses Narrative Enigmas- this is where audience doesn’t fully
understand the starting point and it is sometimes revealed during the
middle of the film or the end.
• Also uses Hermeneutic Codes- appears at the beginning of the
story creating unexplained or unanswered questions, thus creating
tensions that engages the audience.
• It uses Proairetic Code- refers to mere actions. Plots that leads to
another actions. Suspense is created by actions rather than by a
viewer's wish to have mysterious explained.
