Teen dramas typically focus on the lives and relationships of teenagers. They often feature an underdog main character and involve a love interest. While exaggerated at times, this allows sensitive topics to be addressed in a lighthearted way. Settings, costumes, lighting, character narratives, and music are employed to provide context and evoke certain moods. Techniques like cross-cutting, point-of-view shots, and handheld camerawork help advance compelling storylines.

Teen drama codes & conventions

2.
In teen dramas, the basic premise is the same, it
looks at situations that occur in teenage life for
example a lot of them look at love
There is often an underdog kind of character, in a
lot of them, its an unpopular person, or someone
that is new to the school (Will from in-betweeners)
A love interest is always involved in someway.
Many of the characters in teen dramas are
exaggerated from what they would be in real
life, but this helps give the film a comical edge
which allow different situations be approached in
a light hearted way.
3.
Setting – As the characters in teen dramas are all of high
school age (Sixth form/college) it is also an easy way of
showing the different groups. E.g Popular, unpopular,
rebels, rich poor etc.
Also Character’s houses are used as well in teen dramas.
By filming the house of different characters it is easy to
distinguish what kind of character they are. E.g.
Rich/Popular children tend to have big/lavish while a
normal girl has a normal type of house etc.
Costume – Costume is fairly simple s they are just
teenagers, so everyday wear is worn although it varies
slightly from character to character it gives each
character a different identity and helps represent the type
of character they are.
Lighting is used in teen dramas tends to be fairly bright
unless it is a very dark (Horrible things happening) scene
4. In a lot of teen dramas, they often have the
main character do a narrative. This helps
the audience understand the characters
feelings and to know exactly what the
character is thinking, as usually the
unpopular person is too scared to say what
they think
It helps for the audience to gain a bit of
empathy for the character to know what
they are feeling.
5. Music plays a massive part in teen
dramas. They use it to help get across
the feelings of the character. E.G
upbeat song if the character is in a good
mood/something good has happened
It sets the tone of each part of the film
and helps to know when you should feel
happy/sad
6.
There are a lot of different camera techniques use in
teen dramas, for instance, cross cutting is used quite
a lot to flick from the popular to the un-popular
Also cross cutting back to what may have just
happened in the pat or to a day dream of a
character is also quite common.
Some teen dramas use techniques like panning and
split screens to help show as much things as possible
in the shot
POV shots are used in a lot of teen dramas as it shows
the view of the main characters.
Sometimes a free-hand shot is used to show hectic
scenes such as running away from the police or
being pushed around.
