- 1. HOW TO BE A HUMAN LIE DETECTOR: Solo talk by Elizabeth Baillie Linguistics, tells and cues.
- 2. SO HOW AM I GOING TO HELP YOU? This is going to be split into four parts: - What is deception analysis and who uses it? - A brief introduction to ‘tells’ or ‘cues’ - Reading micro expressions and examples - Conclusion and questions.

WHAT IS DECEPTION ANALYSIS? • A type of psychology that helps people in law enforcement. • There is no ‘real’ career actually involving human lie detection. • Deception analysis is not the real name of this skill • Many people use it though • Your boss, the police, doctor, psychologist etc. • The untrained eye will miss the following signs easily.

SIGNS SOMEONE IS LYING: • They will talk in the future tense instead of the past tense. • Right for remember, left for lie. • They will deflect to other people • They will go out of their way to convince you. • They will distance themselves from the subject. • Their word choice will change. • “I DID NOT have sexual relations with THAT woman” – Bill Clinton. • If it sounds rehearsed – they’re lying.

- I’m going to talk about how you can tell someone is lying through linguistics (speaking), body language and facial expressions; these are referred to as “tells” or “cues”
- Now this sullen looking guy is Tim Roth, who plays Cal Lightman in “Lie to me”. He was paid a great deal of money to open his own business in the show where he would speak to witnesses/persons of interest and possible suspects in crimes; he would read their face and assist the FBI in finding the killer, finding the body, motive etc. anything they needed to know purely by talking to them and reading their face.
- Sadly though, no job actually exists. The nearest we have in any country is behavioural research, there is no job where we fully assist the police in such a way. How great would that be though? (Or perhaps I’m just a geek!) However, the one and only place (well, place that carries credibility) to study this is in the BSU in the FBI training facility in Quantico, Virginia, USA. While it is initially used for FBI (and again only for research!) there are other people who use it! You’re boss for example, will read your face (if skilled in people reading) and will determine whether you’re telling the truth or not…so always be careful! It’s also a useful skill to have if you suspect your partner is cheating, make sure you have the facts though!!
- Another point to remember is that liars DON’T fidget or cannot keep eye contact, infact prior to belief, they actually make a conscious effort to stay still and keep as much eye contact as possible to “prove” their sincerity. They will always go out of their way to convince you that they are telling the truth; “I didn’t take that money, okay? If you don’t believe me ask my friend Stephen, he was with me the whole time! Infact lets call him just now eh?” an honest person would just say “No, I didn’t take the money”
- Bill is looking to the left, during the speech he kept eye contact with one person the whole time (trying to maintain eye contact) he doesn’t break it at all! He speaks very slowly, not so you can simply understand what he is saying but because if he talks slower and more sternly he thinks he is less likely to trip his words up...except anyone clued up on body language and lie detection will know that he is absolutely teaming with tells.
- Here are some examples of facial cues, now no matter what your age or build is unless you have a specific condition which means you cannot control your muscles, you will aways tell the truth with your face.
- Everyone shows the same micro expressions, no matter what your build is, what your sex is, orientation or biological makeup. Everyone has the same muscles and unless you have a specific condition where your muscles don’t work, you will almost certainly show these “cues” or “tells”
- Kate here is showing contempt, I’m not 100% sure what Gerry is showing but I think he may be showing disgust, don’t count me on that one though.
