1. Statement of Intent – Prompt Questions (Draft)
Q1. How do you intendto use the four areas of the media theoretical frameworkto communicate
meaningand meetthe requirementsofyour chosen brief?
Product 1:
In myTV drama introduction,Iwill incorporatemedialanguage, suchas, camerawork, editingand
sound.
Genre/sub-genre- WhatTV drama conventionswill youfollow?
I intendtocategorise myTV drama as a thriller,mystery,withelementsof a web-televisionseries
(withthe use of smartphonesandtexting) andalsosupernatural (usingthe ideaof telekinetic
powers). The TV drama conventionsIwill follow are:title graphics/title sequence, miseenscene,a
storyof the maincharacter, depictingthe difference betweencharacterse.g.the ‘good’and‘bad’
characters,a mixture of diegeticandnon-diegeticsounds,suchas,backgroundmusicthatwill fitthe
moodof the TV drama; soundhelpsthe audience categorise aprogramina specificdrama.I alsouse
genre (Iconsthat symbolise the sub-genre, e.g.,apolice carwill symboliseacrime drama) and
editing,usingdifferenteffectswhere appropriate.Linkingtomise enscene,Iwill include semiotics
by usingcertainoutfitsandpropsforthe charactersthat will conveymeaningandwhere theylie in
society.Forexample,Dani,the bestfriendof Alana,dressesdifferentlyfromAlana,whichwillshow
a signthat she is more ‘smart’;the stereotype beinga‘nerdy’character.
How will your openingbe structured?
My openingwill startwithaseriesof differentshotsthatwill conveythe genre:apuddle being
steppedin(the ideaof patheticfallacy;the rainyweatherlinkingtothe moodof whathappensin
the drama),filmingtreesinthe windanda seriesof shotsinemptyplacesandspaces,whichlinksto
the ideaof Alanabeing‘alone’,asshe isthe onlyone that can hearand see the paranormal
happenings.Linkingtothe lastpoint,Ialsowant to incorporate the ideaof sound,byusingmusic
that will fitthe moodandalsoreveal tothe audience aboutwhatgenre myTV drama is.In termsof
camerawork,Iwant to use bothhands onand tripodworkin the shotsfor myintroduction,asI feel
that cameraworkisan elementthatisstudiedbythe audience. Handsonworkhintsto the realityof
the storyline andthe tripodworkshowsthe stabilityandseriousnessof the shots.
Whatsub-genreconventionswill you draw on?
For example,asub-genreformyTV drama is mystery.Iwill include thiswiththe use of text
messagingandediting,tomanipulate the scene,toshow the audience whatAlana’smindiscapable
of doing. Also, the ideaof notknowingwhothe villainis, createsasense of mysteryandhow he has
stalkedAlanatomake herbecome paranoid.
Setting? (Both time and place - including two locations)
The time will be set in the afternoon, where the three girls are walking home from College.
The two locations will be using is the grass area in College and Castlefield House, that will be
used as Alana’s house. The audience will be able to see this due to the daylight throughout
the filming.
Characters? (At least two, representing two different social groups)
2. Alana, my main character represents the stereotypical ‘popular’ girl; the audience will be
able to depict this due to her outfits. However, her personality is different from the typical
popular girl. She creates a kind and caring impression with her friends but as things turn, her
temperament changes as she becomes bewildered and confused on why she has these
deep, dark thoughts, she fighting these inner conflicts; her inner self is not projected as
much to her friends. Dani, Alana’s best friend, is represented as a ‘smart tomboy’, along
with Charlotte, who is represented as a more ‘girly, relaxed smart girl’. The villain, Anon; his
personality cannot be depicted but it is obvious that he doesn’t have a normal way of
thinking; he is represented as a psychopath.
Narrative themes?
As mentionedabove,mymainnarrative themefollowsthe thrillerandmysterygenre,whichwill
make up mystoryline toappeal tothe audience.Mystoryline willhave anopenending, meaning
that there isno final conclusiontothe story. My narrative will byinformedtothe audience through
characters (the girls, mainlyAlana, andAnon, the villaininthisTV drama),action(how the events
leadupto my keydramaticmoment) andlocation(where myTV drama will be filmedandhow itfits
the storyline).This narrativemaybe deliveredtobyaudience byexpectation,suspenseandtension,
whichtheywill feelwhilstwatchingthe opening, thislinkstothe medialanguage aspectof myTV
drama. Meaningsinmytextand TV drama will be encodedthroughmedialanguage.
How will your representations engage your audience?
Mediarepresentationsare howgroups,events,placesorsocial changesare portrayedinthe media,
howtheyare re-presented.Theyalsoofferaversionof reality,thatwill appeal tomyaudience.
Representationsare subjectiverathe ratherthanobjective andare constructed. Forexample,my
stereotype of Alana,butwithatwist,thatshe doesn’thave popularfriends,willengage the
audience asthe age of the characters do appeal tothe age range of the demographic.
What issues of representation do you need to consider? Are any theories of representation
you have learnt relevant, i.e. Hall, Van Zoonen?
Stuart Hall theorisesthatmediarepresentationsare oftenreliantonstereotypeswhichreduce social
groupsto simplisticcharacteristicsortraits.Theyare in texts,whichare establishedthroughmedia
language.He saysthat these stereotypesreflectinequalitiesinpowerleadingtothe subordination
of certainsocial groups(e.g.ethnicminoritiesandwomen).The waysinwhichtextsare decoded
oftenreflectthe encodedmeaningalthoughthiscannotbe guaranteed.Ineedtoconsiderthe idea
of the stereotype thatismainlywomenthatgetattackedby menandthat theyget stalked, whichis
whatmy storyline ispartially basedon, however,Ineedtobe careful whenencodingmeaning, asit
may notbe decodedinthe same wayas it wasmeantto be.Olderpeople inmyaudience
demographicmaythinkthatmy storyline isbasedonsexualisingyoungwomenandhow theymay
be a prime targetto attacks, wheninreality, anyone canbe at riskof beingattacked, however, inthe
media, itismainlyshownthatit is usuallymenwhoare the perpetratorsof attackson young
women.
How will you produce content that is suited to the relevant media institution (channel and
broadcast time)?
3. I will produce mycontenttosuitthe relevantmediainstitutionbymakingsure myTV drama is not
overlygraphic, asthe TV drama wouldbe broadcastedpre-watershed,whichrunsthe riskof little
childrenwatchingit,eventhoughitisnotsuitedtothat targetaudience.
If not already covered in your responses above – how will your content appeal to the
target audience?
My content will appeal to a fun-loving 16-25 year old demographic by making it fit to what
the audiences’ expectations are. The characters profiles fit those of the ‘relatable’
demographic. The twists in the storyline and stereotypes will help attract viewers and drip
them onto the key dramatic moment at the end of the opening.
Product 2:
What website conventions will you follow?
In my website design for the TV drama, I want to follow these website conventions: a
homepage, a header, a footer, a navigation bar, scrolling, sliders, a hero image and call to
action, which is an important feature to include, to shows that the website can be shared to
other social media sites to spread ‘word of mouth’.
How will your characters be represented on your website?
My characters will be represented through the use of images, both groups and possible
individual shots. I want to also incorporate ‘behind the scenes’ or ‘bloopers’, which can also
represent my characters on the website, through the different features.
What does the style of your website need to communicate in order to appeal to the target
audience?
The style of my website needs to fit the themes and genres of the TV drama itself. It needs
to include social media links to pages to engage the audience to share. It also needs to
feature different fonts and colour themes to represent the drama’s intentions.
How will you make sure your website matches the institutional context? I.e. what will you
do to make your website in keeping with an ITV2 programme website?
I will incorporate elements of the ITV2 website, however, create my own TV drama page,
which will make it look realistic. The colours and images need to also follow codes and
conventions on what ITV2 would like the website page to look like, for example, use the
same PNG images for the logos and follow the same steps to create an exact replica of the
header and footer of the website, as well as the navigation bar.
Q2. How do you intend to link your media products to demonstrate your knowledge and
understanding of the digitally convergent nature of yourmedia production?
Media convergence encourages greater audience engagement by making content more
accessible on the website platform. This can increase audience numbers, as well as the
viewer’s enjoyment and appreciation that the institution have considered their needs. I will
do this by using my knowledge and skills from when I had to create a version of the Love
Island website. By doing this, I can link my media products using digital convergence to
4. create my media production. I will consider my brand identity and how my brand will be
clear and consistent across both my TV opening and website.
How will you promote the website and engagement online in the TV opening?
I will use text in the TV opening by creating a hashtag that can trend on social media, which
can bring the audience together to shows their views and opinions in one place. I will also
include the link of the website so that audiences can access other elements to do with the
programme.
How will you make the most of the website and connected online media to further engage
your audience with your TV drama?
I will make the most of the website and connected online media to further engage my
audience with my TV drama by, as mentioned above, including elements, such as, bloopers
or behind the scenes, interviews etc. to engage the audience. Also, adding an element which
mentions the episodes and when the next one will air. The episodes can also be accessed
and ‘watched’ through the website, which will encourage the audience to use the website
to keep up to date with the TV drama.
