Statement of Intent
How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical
framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements
of your chosen brief? (approx. 400 words)
The brief states that there must be at least two representations of two different social groups. To do
this I will choose to include movies in my magazine that have diverse casts in them so I can represent
a wide array of social groups; I will also make sure I don’t represent these groups in a way that relies
on harmful stereotypes. Since my magazine is focused on horror films if I portray only one social
group as the “villain” or “monster” and another as the “victim” it will lead to harmful connotations for
both groups.
My target audience for this magazine are 16-25-year-old middle and upmarket literate people. The
age-range for my magazine is also the target audience for horror media so my magazine will be able
to have a wide reach within that demographic. The target audience will expect a magazine focused on
reviewing classic and recent horror movies, interviewing notable people in the horror movie industry
and reporting on news relating to horror movies. My magazine will differ from other magazines by
Bauer by being focused on horror films by being focused on only horror-related media.
Since the genre of my magazine is horror than the media language in my magazine will be constructed
in a way that creates a horror aesthetic to reflect the content of the magazine. For example, the colour
palette for my magazine will be red and black as both connote themes of danger and fear. The colour
black represents imagery of the dark and night whereas the colour red evokes imagery of blood and
gore.
For my website, I will make sure the aesthetic of my magazine carries over to my website in order to
create a house style. So, I will make sure I use the same colour schemes and imagery present in my
magazine. My font choices will be different since serif fonts work better on paper and sans serif fonts
work better online.
I have found out from my research and planning who the general audience is for movie magazines,
which font types work best for my magazine, the typical codes and conventions for other horror
movie magazines (colour schemes, fonts, imagery etc) and how house styles are created.
How do you intend to link your media products to demonstrate
your knowledge and understanding of the digitally convergent
nature of your media production? (approx. 100 words)
In order to link these my website and magazine together I will make sure they share the same visual
presentation and media language. This will create a link between the two and create a house style for
my magazine. Another thing I’ll do is make sure the website is advertised in the magazine and vice
versa so my readers are aware of the other product and know where to find it.
