Let’s
look
at
some
of
the
ways
teachers
incorporate
the
learning
of
nonfiction
into
their
literacy
block.
This 2
nd
grade teacher includes fiction
and nonfiction in her classroom library.
This first grader is assigned to
write about nonfiction materials
at a writing center.
2. Alyson Mitchell, June 2009
These first graders locate assigned
places on maps at a discovery center
while their teacher is engaging other
children in a guided reading lesson.
2
nd
graders work in small
groups to research a topic
which will later be presented to
the class.
3. Alyson Mitchell, June 2009
These
teachers
have
included
reading
and
writing
into
their
content
areas
(science,
social
studies,
math,
music
and
art).
Children
are
interested
in
their
world,
so
why
not
read
and
write
about
things
they
are
curious
about
while
also
teaching
other
subject
areas?
This
is
content
area
literacy.
This 2
nd
grade sample of interactive writing (the
teacher and children share the pen) is a timeline
showing important dates from the early colonial
days. The class created this as they studied in
social studies American history.
