 Juniper berry essential oil (Juniperus
communis) is a steam-distilled oil from the
berries and needles of the juniper plant
 The health benefits of Juniper Essential Oil
can be attributed to its properties as an
antiseptic, sudorific, antirheumatic,
depurative, antispasmodic, stimulating,
stomachic, astringent, carminative, diuretic,
rubefacient, vulnerary and tonic substance.

 A piece of laboratory apparatus invented in 1879
 Used in the solvent extraction of organic substances
from solid natural materials
 Soxhlet extraction is only required where the desired
compound has a limited solubility in a solvent, and
the impurity is insoluble in that solvent

5. Procedure of the extraction of Juniper
essential oil
 The Juniper berries are crushed using
a pestle and mortar to provide a
greater surface area

6. • The solid material is inserted in
the porous container and the
solvent in the flask

7. • The solvent is heated to reflux
• Boiling solvent vapors rise up
throught the larger side- arm
• Condensed drops of solvent fall into
the porous container and extract
the organic substances
• When the soxhlet chamber is
almost full, is emptied by the siphon
• The solvent is returned to the
boiling flask
• And the cycle repeats………
