Nicolae Titulescu: Romanian Statesman and Peace Advocate
1. Nicolae Titulescu (1882-1941) occupied, for almost four decades, a leading
position in Romania's public life and became, among the two world wars, one of the
prominent personalities of international life.
His political activity began in 1912, the year of his election as deputy in
Parliament. Five years later he would get his first ministerial mandate - finance. At
the beginning of 1918 he left for Paris, where he participated as a member of the
Romanian delegation at the Peace Conference. Upon returning to the country, he will
hold - for a few months - his second term as Finance Minister, and in 1922 he will be
appointed Plenipotentiary Minister of Romania in London.
2. Titulescu was called the "peace academician", "the minister of
Europe", "the tribunal of peace," and A. Frangulis, president of the
International Diplomatic Academy, evoking Titulescu, characterized him as
"a legendary figure of international congresses and meetings." In fact,
Nicolae Titulescu was among the founding members of the International
Diplomatic Academy in Paris.
