Interview with Chris Gladwin
Radio Studio ProductionFacilities
Today I interviewed the MediaTechnician ChrisGladwinwithinthe E6radiostudio.While we were
interviewingChriswe gotthe chance to talk to himaboutthe differenttypesof softwareand
hardware withinthe E6 radiostudio.Alsowhendoingthisinterview Iwasputina teamof three
includingme;withmyself,HemitandAdam.We askedChrisa total amountof fourquestionsand
withthese fourquestionswe gatheredenoughinformationtotalk aboutthe productionfacilities
withinaNon-Profitradiostudio(E6). The questionswe askedChriswere,whatsoftware doesE6
radiouse?Couldyoulista fewof the productionfacilitiesthatE6 Radiouse?How far doesE6 Radio
broadcast? Is the E6 radio studiosoundproof? Below Iamnow goingto lista numberof RadioStudio
productionfacilitieswithinthe E6studio;
- S RadioOctomix CompactwithTouchScreen;thisis a portable unitwhichcomeswithan8 channel
mixerandUSB audiointerface
- S RadioSoftware Modules –live module forbroadcasting, schedulingmodule forcompilingshows,
productionmodule forimportingandorganizingmedia
- DAW ReaperandAudacity
- Microphones - AV JEFE STM9 (PresenterMic),Rode nt2000 (GuestMic)
- Behringer4Channel Headphone Amplifierx 4 (Headphones)
- StreamingSoftware (PlanetEStream)
SecondlyIam goingto give a brief descriptiononwhicheachpiece
of Radiosoftware andhardware doesandwhyit isimportantto
have it.While providingimagesasanexample toshow youit looks
like withinthe E6radiostudio. Firstof all the S RadioOctomix inmy
opinionisthe mostimportanthardware withinthe E6radiostudio.I
thinkthisbecause the SRadioOctomix allowsyoutomix insoftware
like chartmusicor radiojingles,bydoingthissuccessfullythereshouldbe nodeadairwithinthe
radioshowbroadcast forE6. I alsobelieve thatthe SRadioOctomix isa veryefficienthardware
because itcomeswitha touch screenmonitoranditis alsoa portable unitallowingyou toportit to
differentplaces.Andif youlookinthe toprighthand cornerof the textI have lefta roughimage of
the S radio Octomix thatwe use inthe E6 RadioStudio.Andasyou can see onthe bottomof the
monitorisa channel 8 mixingboardand thishasa total amountof six waysinwhichyoucan mix in
soundtracks, music, jinglesetc. FurthermoreIam now goingto talkaboutthe firstpiece of software
that I listedandthisisaboutthe S RadioSoftware Modules.The E6radio studiohas a total amount
of three modulesandwiththese threemodulestheycandothingslike;broadcast,schedule and
evenimportmediasoftware filessuchasmusicfiles. The software onthe SRadioOctomix isreally
importanttowardsE6 radiobecause withoutit E6 radiowill notbe able to broadcastto the people in
SalfordCityCollege (SCC). ThirdlyIamgoingto talk aboutthe computersoftware thatE6 radiomight
use for contributingfactorslike audioproduction. The computersoftware thattheyuse canbe
alteredfromtwodifferenttypes,one calledDAWReaperandthe othercalledAudacity.These are
veryreliable piecesof softwarebecause if apresenterwantedtopre-recordsomethingtheycould
use DAW Reaperor Audacitytoput ittogetheranduse itin there E6 radiobroadcast.

FourthlyIam goingto give a brief descriptioninthe MicrophonesthatE6 radio
use inorder to speakdirectlytotheircollege audience withinSCC(SalfordCity
College). The presenterMicrophone which isusedinthe E6 radio studiois
calledthe AV JEFE STM9 Microphone.Thismicrophone isthe bestwithinthe E6
radiostudioand itproducesanddistributeshighqualityaudiocontenttowards
there College audience. The secondMicrophone theyuse inthe E6RadioStudio
iscalledthe Rode nt2000 Microphone andthismicrophone ismainlyusedbyaguestor a co-hoston
the E6 radiobroadcast. But despite the facttheyare twoverydifferentmicrophonestheystill
distribute highqualityaudiocontenttowardsthere collegedemographicaudience.Howeverinorder
to here themselvesclearlytheyare goingtoneedheadphones.Andthe headphonestheyuse inthe
E6 radiostudioare calledthe Behringer4 Channel Amplifier;andtheyhave a total amountof four
headphoneswithinthe E6radiostudio. Above Ihave leftanexample photoof the Amplifierthe E6
radiostudiousesto plugthere headphonesin. HoweverIhave explainedthingssuchasthe software
and hardware inthe paragraphs above, butinorderto streamtheyneedto use streamingsoftware
and the software theyuse iscalledPlanetEStream. The software PlanetEStreamallowsthe E6Radio
Studiotobroadcast to differentCollege’swithinSCC,andwithoutittheywill be notbe able to
broadcast.
Furthermore Iam nowgoingto compare E6 radio’sproductionfacilitiestoprofessional production
facilitiesthatare usedby a companycalledRPCAudio. The RPCAudio mediasectorislocatedin
CarltonColville,Lowestoft,Suffolk.Fromthe studiosthatare locatedhere theyare able tobroadcast
to multiple peoplearoundthe UnitedKingdom. Whenbroadcastingtomultiple people theyalsouse
professionalproductionfacilitiessuchas;
- AudioTechnicaMicrophones(AT4047) withSafe Soundpre-amps
- Pro ToolsandAdobe Audition
- Wavesand Focusrite Plugins
- TC FinalizerMasteringProcessor
- BCX PlayoutSystem
Above isjusta small amountof professional productionfacilitiesthatthe RPCAudio Company uses
to broadcastboth audioand broadcastprogramme production. Incomparisontothe E6 radio
studio’sproductionfacilitiesIcansee thatthere isa magnificentdifference betweeneachof them.
In waysinwhichthe professional software andhardware equipmentproducesanddistributesmuch
betteraudiocontenttotheirbroaderdemographicaudienceprofile.Anexampleof adifference
betweenthe E6Studioandthe RPCStudioisthe software where theyuse.The E6Studiostreams
withthe PlanetEStreamsoftware andthe RPCStudiostreamwitha software calledBCXPlayout
System.The RPC’sstreamingsystemisalotmore advancedintechnologycomparedtothe E6
streamingsystembecause withthe RPC’ssystemitshowsweatherinspecificareas,timesin
differentcountriesetc.Byhavingmore advancedtechnological equipment inthere radiostudiothey
will be able toworka lotmore efficientlycomparedtoE6 because the technological equipment
almostdoesitall for theminthe sense thatitgivesthemweather/trafficupdatesetc.
