This document discusses how a media product represents various social groups through its characters. It analyzes the representation of government employees, friends, and siblings in the opening of the media product. For the powerful male guard character and female leader, it took inspiration from films like The Bourne Identity and Kill Bill that portrayed similar authoritative figures. The spies were represented as friends helping one another, drawing from films like Se7en. One spy's goal is to find a cure for his dying sister, reflecting protective sibling relationships in works like Sin City and The Hunger Games. Throughout, mise-en-scene elements like low-key lighting were used to set an eerie tone, taking cues from movies such as The Maze Runner and

How Media Represents Social Groups
1. HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL
GROUPS?
2. SOCIAL GROUPS
• A social group is a group of people who can be generalised in groups
because they interact with each other, they share similar characteristics,
and collectively have a sense of unity.
Social groups can be defined by:
Age
Gender
Sexuality
Nationality
Hobbies
3. REPRESENTATION OF SOCIAL GROUPS
• In our opening we represented three different social groups:
Government employees
Friends
siblings
4. GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES
• The Guard is one of the powerful characters within the organisation his characteristics are:
A bold character who is fast, quick and frightening.
Our guard is the typical male character who is ordered to stop the spies which shows he has
authority like the typical guard as they are portrayed as strong and powerful individuals.
This represents the typical social group of a powerful position within an organisation.
We dressed the Guard in a suit to show his authority in comparison to others.
5. • We took inspiration for the strong, male guard character from the film Bourne Identity.
The Guard is shown to be wearing dark clothes and portrayed as being a powerful
controlling individual; this is similar to our Guard as he is in a similar attire to show his
villainous side. We are also able to see the importance of the Guard as he is sent to
protect others. This is linked to our Guard Character as he is sent out straight away to get
the spies as he has a strong sense of power.
6. GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES
• The female leader who is the head of population control has
many character traits- Strong, independent and demanding she
is portrayed as the authority figure.
• Our head character is controlling and has the most power in the
opening; people should be afraid of her as she has more
authority and control.
7. • For the head we took inspiration from Kill Bill, as Bill overpowers her and treats her as a
weaker character. We used this aspect in our Thriller as the head has a lot more power
than any of the other characters and is able to control them. As the head is sitting at the
computer looking in on the spies emphasises her sense of authority. She can also use
others, such as the guard ,to protect herself. We used low key lighting and black clothing
like the scene in Kill Bill to give an eerie atmosphere as well as emphasising the villainous
character of the head.
We also took inspiration from
Vanessa Redgrave’s character
from Mission Impossible as she
is a very demanding, controlling
character
8. FRIENDS
• The spies have the social group of friends as they share a close
bond and have the same motives .
• Characteristics: Close and helpful to one another
• In our opening we wanted to represent the social group of
helpful individuals, who are seeking a cure for the illness which is
spreading. We presented them in this way to show the positive
side to a sometimes negatively presented social group, as they
are out to support each other.
9. • We took inspiration for the spies characters from the opening of seven as we wanted
them to be mysterious which is portrayed in the opening of the movie; however, we are
able to see papers being searched and analysed in the film which we similarly used for
our opening to show to franticness of the spies.
We also took inspiration
from Mulder and Scully as
they both share a close
bond to one another.
10. SIBLINGS
One of the spies is trying to find the antidote for
his dying sister; this shows who the hero is in the
thriller. He is very empathetic towards his younger
sister which shows his characteristics.
We took this idea of protection and security from
the partnership from the thriller Sin City where
Dwight protects Shellie. There are a myriad of high
angles used to show his heroic nature which we
also used for our character. We can also see this
bond in The Hunger Games between Katniss and
Prim which we also took our idea of the sibling
protection from.
11. MISE- EN-SCENE
• Throughout the opening we took mise-en-scene into
consideration for all the characters. Low key lighting is used
throughout which is a typical code and convection to a thriller
film, we used this to add to the eerie mysterious atmosphere and
to emphasise the plot.
• We used a brighter light when filming the flashback to show who
the heroic characters are.
The idea of low
key lighting also
came from The
Maze Runner as
it added to the
daughting
atmosphere.
12. MISE-EN-SCENE
• The ideas for the black clothing came from Face Off where the
two men are both shown to be in black clothing to show their
villainous side. The idea for the flashback came from the film Kill
Bill where the lighting is low key to disorientate the viewer.
