Evaluation 2
1. Evaluation 2: How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
BY EMILY HYNES
2. Social Groups:
How do you represent those who have appeared in your film?
Friends Siblings Government employees
3. Social Groups:
Friends:
We represented the social group of friends through
our two main characters Max and Kiera. Their strong
friendship allows them to function well as a team and
act effectively as spies to steal the antidote.
We got the idea for these characters through the close
bonds of the friends in the Maze Runner movie. We
saw the close bonds within this film and wanted our to
mimic it within our opening.
We gathered our inspiration from various spy
movies such as Bourne when spies typically wear
black clothing, minimal makeup and basic
hairstyles. We also got inspiration for our lighting
from various thrillers such as Face Off that use dark
lighting, it is a typical convention of most thrillers.
4. Social Groups: Siblings:
We represented siblings in our thriller through
the characters Max and Rosie. We took
inspiration from movie siblings such as Cassie
and Sammy in The 5th Wave and Katniss and
Prim in The Hunger Games. Both of these
siblings are incredibly close and see the older
sibling fighting to save their younger sibling. We
saw these characters and wanted ours to be
similar, Max is very protective of Rosie and does
anything to save her, as seen in the black and
white flashback.
We took again took inspiration for our characters
costumes from the hunger games, dressing Rosie in
pyjamas and childlike clothing, and Max in more formal
adult wear (as seen in the picture of The Hunger Games
on the right). Most siblings are also wearing very little
makeup with dishevelled hair, we aimed to recreate this
with our characters. The flashback scene is shown in
black and white lighting, for this scene we took
inspiration again from the opening of Face Off, where
dark, dreamlike colours are used to show past events
5. Social Groups: Government employees
We showed government employees in our
thriller through the female boss Jennifer and
her security guard. Our influences for these
characters came from Jeanine Matthews in
the Divergent series, a scary female boss who
controls armies of people.
We also took clothing inspiration from Jeanine
Matthews’ character who is dressed very formally in
dark clothing. She also wears minimal makeup and
wears her hair back, much like our character. We
again used Face Off for inspiration when deciding
on clothing for our security guard. We dressed him
in dark, formal clothing like that of Nicholas Cage’s
character.
