2. FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE
• Florence and the Machine are an indie rock band. They were created as a band in London, England
in 2007. They have a main singer who is the most commonly noticed individual – Florence Welch.
She was born on the 28 August 1986 and is an English musician, singer and songwriter.
• The band's music is known for its dramatic and eccentric production.
• How the name was formed - ‘ I made music with my friend, who we called Isabella Machine to
which I was Florence Robot. When I was about an hour away from my first gig, I still didn't have a
name, so I thought 'Okay, I'll be Florence Robot/Isa Machine’.
• Florence and the Machine started off by playing a handful of gigs in and around London. In May
2008, they supported MGMT on tour in Europe. This led to them playing music festivals in 2008,
including Glastonbury and Reading and Leeds. This helped publicise the band and receive
recognition.
3. AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS
• At the 2009 Brit Awards they received the Brit Awards "Critics' Choice" award.
• The band's debut studio album, Lungs, was released on 6 July 2009, and held the number-two
position for its first five weeks on the UK Albums Chart. On the 17 January 2010, the album reached
the top position, after being on the chart for twenty-eight consecutive weeks, making it one of the
best-selling albums of 2009 and 2010.
• The group's second studio album, Ceremonials, released in October 2011, entered the charts at
number one in the UK and number six in the US.
• The band's third album, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, was released on 2 June 2015. It topped
the UK charts, was at number one on the US Billboard. The album reached number one in a total of
eight countries and the top ten of twenty.
• Also, in 2015, the band was the headlining act at Glastonbury Festival, making Florence Welch the
first British female headliner this century.
• The group has supported the UK Teenage Cancer Trust, performing at a concert for the charity at
London's Royal Albert Hall in March 2009.
• The band played at Australia's Splendour in the Grass festival in July 2010. They received one of the
biggest crowds during the three-day festival. It is estimated that 28,000 people of the 33,000 people
who attended the festival crammed in to see Florence and the Machine.
4. ABOUT THE BAND
• The current band members include: Florence Welch – lead vocals, percussion
• Isabella Summers – keyboards, synths, backing vocals
• Robert Ackroyd – lead guitar
• Christopher Lloyd Hayden – drums, percussion, backing vocals, acoustic guitar
• Tom Monger – harp, xylophone
• Mark Saunders – bass guitar, percussion, backing vocals
• Rusty Bradshaw – piano, Hammond, rhythm guitar, backing vocals
• Their music can be found on popular music apps such as iTunes and Spotify. They also have a
YouTube channel with 101,570 subscribers. Their YouTube allows fans to watch their videos and
link the lyrics to what they can visualise, which can create more meaning and fascination for an
audience. People are able to interact with each other on this platform with comments…
• The band have a group Facebook page where they can share updates such as potential gigs and
tours to fans on a well known platform.
• As a group we have chosen to chose the well known song by Florence and the Machine –
Spectrum.
