GDG Cloud Southlake 32: Kyle Hettinger: Demystifying the Dark Web
How Preliminary Tasks Improved My Magazine Creation Skills
1. Evaluation Question 7
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt
in the progression from it to full product?
2. Research - planning
I have learnt that before planning and research I will need to look up
similar artists and magazines that links to my genre so I can have a look
at what makes this appeal to my target audience and implement my
own ideas later on. The difference between what I did to create my work
and what I did to create my work during prelim is that in prelim I looked
at different magazine genres which did not help me as much but during
the final piece I looked at vibe magazine which was really similar and I
followed the same codes and conventions from their magazine to link
mine to the rap genre. After the prelim tasks I have a good
understanding on what codes and conventions to follow and break for
my magazine.
3. Interviews and questionnaires
At the start, I asked people what genres appeal to them and why do they
like it, this gave me some knowledge during my production for my
magazine as I knew which genres would appeal to my target audience
and why it would. I asked mainly teenagers and interviewed them as I
was aiming at that age group when I start my magazine. The interviews
and questions really gave me an understanding which what decisions I
should make and what my magazine should be. The difference between
this and what I did in prelim is that in prelim I didn’t ask questions about
what magazine genre I should do and I didn’t know whether a niche
market or a mainstream market was better. These questionnaires made
it easier to appeal to my target audience and follow codes and
conventions.
4. Pictures
I had the chance to use HD Cannon cameras and this was
useful as I was able to take high quality photographs
which I can then use for my magazine. I also use a camera
in prelim which gave me the experience to use it well in
my magazine. I mainly use this camera to take photos of
my model which then can be put onto my front cover, my
contents page and my double page spread.
5. Drawn Drafts
In my prelim posts, my drawn drafts looked really rough
and it shows how my student magazine will look. I also
put annotations around my drafts which helped me
identify what something is and why I decided to have it
there. In the real thing I was able to create drafts as well
and use this to give me an idea what my magazine would
look like.
6. Codes and conventions
The codes and conventions I followed in my magazine allowed me to make it link to the rap
genre. On my front cover I followed codes and conventions my having my model look towards
the viewer with a serious facial expression and a hand gesture which connotes aggression and
this appeals to rap audiences as aggression I found a lot in rap magazines. The colour scheme for
my magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread are the same and the colours I
used is red, black and white which makes it link to the rap genre and appeals to males over
females as these colours are more masculine. The front cover also included cover lines and a
main cover line which anchors to the main image and to the double page spread. In the contents
page I followed codes and conventions by having my model look towards the viewer which
makes them feel more included and it also grabs their attention. The contents are also grouped
so the reader can navigate through this page easier. In my double page spread I followed codes
and conventions which made this magazine link to the rap genre as I had my model pose in a
more serious pose and it is a pose which many rappers get into. My main image was made my
whole background which made this look more professional and link with rap. The article also
followed conventions as it used slang which appeals to my target audience.
7. Time management
My time management skills were great because I got my work
finished and I did a lot of work at home to make sure I reached
deadlines. However I got pulled back at times for when I was
using other presentation websites to create my work mad me
work slower as I did not know how to use them fully which lead
to me becoming behind a bit. But I did catch up By doing most of
my work at home.
8. Creative skills
I had obtained a lot my skills and knowledge from work I did back in prelim as I
learnt to use the few fundamental programs which boosted my it capabilities. After
preliminary I definitely feel that my work has got more creative and my work will
appeal to my audience. I put what I learnt form prelim into use as I started my real
course work which allowed me to start creating my magazine. I created drawn
drafts first which will act as a sort of guideline for when I start creating the
magazine. In addition when It came to the production of the magazine. I made sure
every feature of my magazine was positioned in a placed which made sense and
would appeal to my target audience. The colour scheme I used was also appealing
to my target audience as it had aggressive connotations.
9. Technical skills
I believe that my technical skills has improved majorly from preliminary work and
this is because I had used a wider range of IT which helped me create work which
then can be implemented onto my blogs. In preliminary I had experience with
using some IT which boosted my knowledge and skills for when I was starting my
real course work. One of the main websites I used in my course work is blogger
which can be used to upload my work online. I also learned how to use
presentation software to create presentations, I used Microsoft word to create
documents and my article which then can be uploaded onto blogger. Finally the
last but major pieces of tech I used was photo manipulation software which
allowed me to create my magazine front cover and contents page as well as my
double page spread. The use of all these software's has made me feel more
comfortable using other programs and websites to create work.
