● Describe the change in the state of matter, in terms of behaviour of the
particles;
● Indicate which changes in state requires gain vs loss of heat energy.

The video shows the change in the state of matter.
Dry ice is carbon dioxide in solid form.
When hot water is added to it, it changes directly to gaseous form. This is the fog that you are
seeing in the video.

El hielo seco es dióxido de carbono en forma sólida.
Cuando se le agrega agua caliente, cambia directamente a forma gaseosa. Esta es la niebla que

In the simulation, try to make the water vapour change from solid to gas by changing the
temperature and/or pressure.

11. SUMMARY
● The main states of matter are solid, liquid and gas.
● Changing from one state to another state of matter is a physical change, NOT a chemical
change.
● The states of matter differ by how much kinetic energy their particles have. Solid matter
has the least, liquid matter has more than solid and gaseous state has the most kinetic
energy in their particles
● Changing from solid to liquid or from liquid to gas needs the addition of energy or
increasing temperature.
● Changing from gas to liquid and from liquid to solid needs the removal of energy or
reducing temperature.
