2008/9 Has Been Challenging for Manufacturers Impact of Financial Crisis on Consumer  Spending Manufacturers Feel Impact of Financial Crisis The manufacturing sector was hit hard by the downturn. Reduced consumer demand led to production cuts at factories. The credit crunch prompted manufacturers to hoard cash and suspend investing in new opportunities.
But Has the Tide Turned – Is the Recession Over? There is optimism that the economy has moved from recession into recovery… The U.S. economy grew at a 3.5 percent pace in the third quarter, the best showing in two years. It's the strongest signal yet that the economy has entered a new, though fragile, phase of recovery.  There is a growing belief among financial experts that the recession is over.  Barry Knapp, a strategist at Barclays Capital, wrote recently that the economy appears "to be in the sweet spot of a recovery.“ Gross domestic product in the third quarter is now expected to show 2.4% growth and the fact that     the jobless rate fell for the      first time in 15 months,             suggests the worst is over.
Either Way: It’s Time to Be Lean and Prepare for Growth Bold Companies Emerge Stronger “Waiting until new demand arrives will be far too late to appropriately meet it, and we are recommending that companies start preparing for business growth now.“

At DMC, we hate to do manual things more than once. We are very accustomed to automating a process, automating data collection, and then automating reporting. We automate assembly lines, conveyor belts, factory floors, as well as testing and measurement.So automating dashboards was a natural fit for what we do.

  4. - Key Performance Indicators are quantifiable measurements, agreed to beforehand, that reflect the critical success factors of an organization and align with overall company goals. - Key Performance Indicators usually are long-term considerations. Their definition and how they are measured do not change often, but goal/target KPI value may change as the organization's goals change or as it gets closer to achieving a goal. - An organization that has as one of its goals "to be the most profitable company in our industry" will have Key Performance Indicators that measure profit and related fiscal measures.- There must be a way to accurately define and measure a KPI.-Keep the number of KPIs small just to keep everyone's attention focused on achieving the same KPIs. - There will be 3-5 Key Performance Indicators for the company and all the units may have 3-5 KPIs that support the overall company goals and can be "rolled up" into them. Turn the data you already collect into useful information that can drive decision-makingEnable you to extract value from existing systems with a relatively small incremental investment

Hold quarterly discussions that are a bit more organized. Schedule a year end review that is really just a review. By the time the year end review happens everything should have been discussed before. No surprises.Hold ongoing communication. Forms are trivial and unimportant to the real purpose.
  7. - AccountabilityMatrix.- People will be motivated to be green and help others be green.
  8. - Use the KPIs as a carrot. Post the KPIs everywhere: in the lunch room, on the walls of every conference room, on the company intranet, even on the company web site for some of them.Show what the target for each KPI is and show the progress toward that target for each of them. People will be motivated to reach those KPI targets.
  9. How many people know that the data they need to measure all of their KPIs is currently being collected and is accurate?How many people have the data, but it’s stored in more than one system? 2 systems? 3 systems? More than 5 systems?
  10. How do you share metrics information?Restrict access? Not usually a good idea. Try to share and keep front of mind!
  11. How much time do you (and/or your staff) spend assembling information? Formatting information? Communicating information?What are some of the ways that you communicate company goals and KPIs?Manual approaches get in the way of accountability (difficult to share, keep measurement baselines and trends)Manual aggregation of data is tedious, time consuming and error prone Orgs have many specialized Line-of-Business (LOB) applications for decision-making and planningDifficult to monitor and manage workflow effectively
  12. Dashboard is not intended to replace other systems; they provide at-a-glance viewsof them. Providing real-time status on KPIs and signaling areas of possible risks or immediate action. Note that Super Green can indicate super success, but sometimes a warning sign that you could become a victim of your own success.
