Where the project is starting from, what the
situation or problem that triggered its
development?
Context: Strijp-S, a former industrial area in Eindhoven is newly developed to
become a central hub for creativity. ‘De apparatenfabriek’, a former Philips building,
is converted to house a collection of small start-up companies. These start-ups
could benefit from each other by working together on an ad-hoc basis, yet, they are
not always aware of what each of them has to bring. What is more, the area is
developed to combine work and living in innovative ways. The creative atmosphere
should not be encapsulated in the buildings but become a part of the whole area.

What are the starting concept,
strategies, what are the development in-
progress, the results achieved?
Project: The ‘Humus project’ aims to capture and document
the creative energy of all the new inhabitants of this building. It
creates a poetic archive of the people passing through its hallways
by means of a installation in the elevator.

What are the tools and process and how
did it support the local project
development?
Design Role: Janne van Kollenburg, the designer of ‘Humus’,
involved the inhabitants of ‘de apparatenfabriek’ in many ways during the
design process. She mapped their movements by literally documenting
their footsteps, she collected inspirational artifacts of the inhabitants and
interviewed many of them. These activities shaped her design actions
and formed the ‘Humus’ concept. When the final result of the project was
confronted to the inhabitants of the building, they were very positive.
