WHAT IS RETAIL BUSINESS?
Retailing involves the process of selling consumer goods or services to customers through
multiple channels of distribution to earn a profit. Retailers satisfy demand identified through a
supply chain.
Retail business sell the finished goods to the customers who are having certain demand to get
fulfilled, in exchange of money.
A retail sale occurs when a business sells a product or service to an individual consumer for his
or her own use. The transaction itself can occur through a number of different sales channels,
such as online, in a brick-and-mortar storefront, through direct sales, or direct mail. The aspect
of the sale that qualifies it as a retail transaction is that the end user is the buyer.

TYPES OF RETAIL BUSINESS
HARDLINES
• Things that tends to
last for a long time.
• Like: Hardware, cars,
furniture etc.
FOOD
• Things that do not stay
for a long time.
• Like: Meat, milk, baked
products.
ART PRODUCTS
• These involves all the goods
such as books, musical
instruments etc.
• Things are not a kind of
perishable.
HISTORY OF RETAIL BUSINESS
The modern customers have grown accustomed with the effortless retail experience in the 21st
century.
Customers can shop at anytime, anywhere with an Omni channel service that has been tailored as
per the requirement of the customers.
The effortless retail has always been one of the dreams for any of the retail business.
Going back to the 1200 BC, the retail business was then also considered worth for money. The
cowrie shells were used to trade goods before there was any currency.
These shells were used to mark the monetary value of the goods and were traded with by the
Romans.

 V-Mart was first incorporated as Varin Commercial Private Limited under the Companies Act in
2002 in West Bengal.
V-Mart Retail primarily operates in Tier II and Tier III cities and is one of the pioneers in setting up
stores across various small Indian towns and cities including Sultanpur, Ujjain, Motihari. Based in
New Delhi, the company operations are spread across northern, western and eastern parts of India.
V-Mart's business can be classified in three business verticals: Apparels, General Merchandise and
Kirana Bazaar.
Maintaining high standards in quality and design, V-Mart offers fashion garments at down-to-earth
prices and over a period of time has emerged as the destination of choice for bargain hunters and
the fashionable alike.

Bata India is the largest retailer and leading manufacturer of footwear in India and is part of the
Bata Shoe Organization.
 It was incorporated as Bata Shoe Company Private Ltd in 1931 and was set up initially as a small
operation in Konnagar (near Kolkata) in 1932.
The company went public in 1973 when it changed its name to Bata India Ltd.
Today, Bata India has established itself as India's largest footwear retailer with a retail network
of over 1,200 stores across the country.
The stores are present in prime locations and can be found in all the metros, mini-metros and
towns.

These market forms serves the daily, weekly, monthly needs of the customers.

care, home care, general merchandise and a basic range of apparels.
CONCLUSION
The study has highlighted the success stories of various companies in the retail business. To
satisfy the human needs, these companies often take a heavy pressure and work 7 days a week,
30 days a month and 365 days in a year. Several big companies are also coming in the retail
business to unleash their potencies in serving customer needs which are never ending. From the
clothing, toiletries, food and beverages to the cars and other transportation vehicles, today the
retail has increased. Retail business has always been the source and center of revenues for any
of the company.
The study has thus shown some of the success stories of certain companies in the retail business
over the years.
