CONTENT ANALYSIS
The boy who drew cats is a Japanese folktale written by Hasegawa Takejiro. This is the story
of a small boy, who loves to draw cats. He only knew to draw cats. Because of this habit, at
first he suffers a lot and finally his habit saves him.

ACT 1
SCENE 1
Long ago...
A farmer and his family. The younger son of the
farmer a lazy boy is introduced as a character
who loves to draw cats.
SCENE 2
Farmer brings his younger son to a priest for
making him an acolyte.
Dialogues between farmer and the priest
ACT 2
SCENE 1
Priest and the boy. The boy doesn’t engage in his
duties.
SCENE2
Priest saw the boy drawing cats in the walls.
SCENE 3
Priest tells the boy to leave the temple as he is not
apt to become an acolyte.

(advice given by the priest to the boy)
ACT 3
Boy thinks of his father’s reaction and decides to
not to g home.
On his way there he saw an old temple. That
night he took his shelter there.
He got afraid with the ambience of the temple.
There was a goblin rat there in the temple which
is monstrous....the boy draws cats in the screens
there and slept there in a small cabin.
Next day he could see the goblin rat died lying in
the floor covered with blood.
He thought it would be the cats which he drawn
had killed the rat.
ACT 4
The boy becomes a well known artist.
ENACTINGTHE PLAY
Students were assigned roles and they presented
the play in the class.
LISTENINGTO THE NARRATIVE
Teacher reads the story and gives explanation and
also gives meanings for difficult words.
FEEDBACK ON THESTORY
Students share their reviews and experience.
Students enacted the play in the class
Students grasped the story and shred their
experiences about the play.
