This study investigated the relationships between motivation to lead (MTL), motivation to develop leadership (MTDL), and leaders' self-development (SDL) based on a survey of 102 workers. The results showed that workers' MTL positively impacted their MTDL and SDL. Additionally, the relationship between MTL and SDL was mediated by MTDL. In other words, high MTL led to greater MTDL, which then facilitated higher SDL. The study provides suggestions for selecting manager candidates and directions for future research.

The Effects of Motivation to Develop Leadership and
Motivation to Lead on Leaders’ Self-Development: A Pilot

Abstract
Qualified managers who could respond quickly to internal issues and external
competitions, serve as important cornerstones of any sustainable organization.
Therefore, leadership has been long play a central role in human resource
management. However, past research shows that a person holding higher ‘Motivation
to Lead (MTL)’ may not have sufficient degree of ‘Motivation to Develop Leadership
(MTDL)’ or ‘Self-Development of Leaders (SDL).’ On the other hand, someone holding
a higher MTDL may have lower MTL The main purposes of this study were to
investigate whether MTL has any association with Motivation to MTDL and SDL of
workers. There were four steps in this study. The first step developed questionnaires
from literatures. The second step asked senior managers conducting expert validity.
The third step was reviewers for face validity. The last step requested 102 workers
from public service and schools completing the survey. Data analysis included one-
way ANOVA, Person’s product moment correlation, and multiple regression analysis.
Major results show that Workers' MTL positively affects their SDL and MTDL; and that
the relationship between MTL and SDL was mediated by MTDL. Finally, suggestions
based upon conclusions were provided for slection of manager candidates and
suggestions for future research.
