Do Something Unless
They Are Willing!

3. …Is the belief that each person
has the inner power to choose
helpful or hurtful actions at any
time.
• Each of us is responsible for the way
we behave.
• We cannot MAKE others behave in
certain ways.
• Free will also applies to children but we
spend a lot of time trying to MAKE
children behave.
We need to shift from “how can I make
children behave” to “how can I help
children choose to behave a certain way?”

4. Adults often think of
childhood as a
carefree time, but in
reality, young children
have very little choice
in their lives.
Consider allowing your child the opportunity to make the
choice to behave in an acceptable way!

5. Offering a positive choice and a
negative choice isn’t really a
choice.. 5
Formula for two POSITIVE choices:
“You have a choice. You may _________ or _________. Which is better for
you?
Example: You can hold my right hand or my left hand while we cross this street.
Which do you choose?
Infants and toddlers do much of their communication without words, but they
can still make choices.
Hold up two choices in front of them and a baby will grab which one they want.
6. In our classrooms, we allow
children to make choices such as
which greeting to receive or
which center to play in. 6

Picture Rule Cards respect a child’s
free will while also providing clear
information about acceptable
behaviors.
Young children see images in their brains instead of words. A picture helps them see what is
expected of them.
