Installation 1
Title of Work: Make-Up – Make-Down
Created by: Sanja Ivekovic
Date Created: 1978
What Happens In The Video?
The video features a woman in her bra
applying a variety of different make up
products. The whole video is made up of
one close up shot of the woman’s chest,
which instantly makes the video appear
sexual, and interests the audience. There is
faint 1970’s pop music playing in the background, which enforces the idea that this
woman is getting ready to go out. The video examines the pressures imposed upon
women to conform to conventional beauty standards and explores what women do to
become societies idea of ‘beautiful’.
How Has The Video BeenCreated And What Techniques Have They Used?
The video would’ve been easy to create considering it includes one shot for the whole
video but as the installation was produced in the 1970’s it explains why the video is so
simple as the technology wasn’t available to create something more elaborate.
How Does This Installation Make You Feel?
As I watch the installation I am initially intrigued by the provocative positioning of the
camera and the relatable actions the woman is doing, such as putting on her make up.
But as the video progresses I become bored by the repetitive actions and the lack of
camera movement.
How Are People Behaving Who Are Watching The Installation?

The audience watching the installation were interested in the video at first but lost
interest after 30 seconds, I assume this is due to the lack of diversity in shots and
content.
How Would You Improve The Video?
I would improve the video by shooting it from a range of different camera angles and
perspectives and include more of the background to enable the viewer to see the setting.
I would engage the viewers by filming the woman doing her hair or getting dressed as
well as doing her make up as these scenes could be filmed without showing the models
identity and will still be in keeping with the original theme of conventional beauty.

What Happens In The Video?
The video shows people on boats and
gondolas on the Grand Cannel in
Venice. The artist dyed the water
bright green with the intention to
raise conscious awareness about
environmental issues such as water pollution. There are a variety of shots used and
some of the shots are sped up or slowed down which engages the viewer. The sound in
the video is the background noise that would’ve been recorded whilst the artist filmed
the visuals.

The video would’ve been filmed using a handheld video camera as the shots are shaky
and resemble an amateur level of filming. The installation would’ve been relatively easy
to create as once the artist had dyed the cannel; he only needed to record how the pubic
reacted to it.
How Does This Installation Make You Feel?
I like the message of this installation, however I was very bored of the simplicity of the
piece. There were a variety of shots that retained by interest but there was no strong
narrative or purpose of the installation, which caused me to lose my interest.
How Are People Behaving Who Are Watching The Installation?
The audience that surrounded the installation were interested initially and once they had
read why the artist had dyed the cannel they seemed to grasp the purpose of the piece
more but it still wasn’t enough to retain their interest for the full length (4 minutes) of
the installation.
How Would You Improve The Video?
I would improve the video by featuring shots of the artist adding dye into the cannel as
well as a voice over or more explanatory clips to demonstrate the full process of the
production of the installation. I would also shorten the length of the installation, as 4
minutes is far too long to sit through considering the shots become repetitive after 20
seconds.
