The document is a proposal for a video installation titled "Inner Workings of the Mind" by Chelsie Brandrick. The 30-50 second video will portray memories and the emotions they evoke through overlay effects on footage of people with distant expressions. It will start slow and build to a climax using a dark and psychotic soundtrack. The goal is to show how hidden mental processes are portrayed and make people aware of the effects of recalling memories. A small crew will be needed, and the video will be filmed and edited within a week for premiere.

Unit 35 – Video Installation Proposal
‘INNER WORKINGS OF THE MIND’
A Video Installation Proposal by Chelsie Brandrick
I. VIDEO INSTALLATION TITLE
My installation project is called ‘Inner Workings of The Mind’. I chose this title as it
represents the emotions and images that I am trying to portray through my installation.
I like how the title doesn’t explain what the video is about which enables the viewers
to make their own interpretation.
II. CONCEPT
‘Inner Workings of The Mind’ is a video installation set around the idea of memory
and is about the emotions memories can cause us to feel when we recall them. The
piece has a dark theme as well as visuals that is based on image association,
metaphors and will be open to interpretation. The video will open with a black title
screen and transition into footage of four different people with a distant expression on
their faces whilst sitting against a white background. I will overlay effects such as ink,
fire, water and smoke on the footage to represent the emotions memories can cause,
e.g. fire is anger and destruction whilst water is relaxed and cleansing. The video will
start out slow and build up to a psychotic and almost psychedelic climax before
ending on a black screen that will allow the video to loop seamlessly. My installation
won’t have a narrative but instead will be centred on personal interpretation and the
use of imagery will allow the audience to create their own meanings and narrative. I
have taken inspiration from the American Horror Story title sequences and Queen’s
Bohemian Rhapsody music video. The soundtrack I am going to use will be eerie,
jarring and will contain psychotic qualities. The installation duration is going to be 30
– 50 seconds as it is long enough to tell the story of the video whilst not losing the
viewers interest.
OBJECTIVES OF THE VIDEO
I aim for the installation to show how the hidden processes of the mind might be
portrayed if we saw them. The purpose of this piece is to make people aware of the
effects recalling memories can have. The video highlights the destructive and negative
emotions we can feel whilst thinking about old memories as well as focusing on why
living in the here and now is a positive thing that can improve our mind sets.

THEME
The themes of the installation are memories, symbolism, positive and negative thinking
and the effects they can have on a person. I will portray this by showing slightly
abstract and altered clips of people thinking and the layover effects will show the
emotions that can be caused.
III. TARGET AUDIENCE
The target audience for this installation art will be intended for 13 years old and
upward, from any social and educational background. The video will be suitable for
anyone that can understand the emotions and symbolism that is being shown.
However, the video is short so all age groups can watch it. Young children won’t be
bored but it may be up to the parents whether they deem it is suitable and they may not
be able to take away the deeper meaning of the installation but it could provide
entertainment regardless.
IV. EXHIBITION SPACE
I wish to install my video installation on computer screen in a dark room. The small
screen will impact the audience and enable them to have an intimate viewing of the
piece, which will heighten the emotions being portrayed. The dark will create an
intense atmosphere that will enhance the psychotic elements of the piece whilst
improving the experience for the viewer.
V. REQUIRED CREW MEMBERS AND EQUIPMENT
3. By Chelsie Brandrick Page 3
There are a variety of key members that will be needed in order to successfully
produce this installation. They are as follows: a camera operator, director, producer,
four actors and an editor.
A director that is capable of achieving the high standard I will need is essential. They
will need to be able to deal with the actors or members of the team that aren’t doing
their job the way I need them to.
The producer will be needed to choose the actors, help create the vision with the
director and oversee the whole production from start to finish.
The camera operator will be vital to record the footage that will be used as a
foundation for the whole video.
I will need multiple actors to portray the emotions that will be shown via overlay
footage but they won’t need to have outstanding acting abilities as they will sit down
and won’t say anything for during the shoot.
The last key member that will be needed is an editor. They will be responsible for
honouring the producer and directors wishes and appropriately achieve the vision with
the footage that’s been shot. The editor will need to have good communication skills in
order to liaise with the director as well as having good editing skills, as they will need
to make a professional standard installation.
To create my video installation I will need access to a camera, tripod, photography
studio, lighting equipment and a MacBook to edit that has Final Cut Pro.
VI. SCHEDULE
The installation will take a day to shoot and two days to edit, as the shots aren’t
complex to film but will require a lot of editing. I plan to start the production process
on May 19th and post-production on May 22nd – May 24th. I will hope to premiere the
installation May 25th 2017.
VII. BUDGET
The installation will require a small budget to be made as the actors, location and
camera equipment will be sourced from college so will be free. As the shoot will occur
during lesson time the actors will already be on the premises so travel expenses won’t

be necessary. The only thing that will need to be paid for is the travel expense for the
editor to go to and from their editing space.
