The document summarizes a student's media evaluation of a short conversation film they produced. It discusses the various shots used, including establishing shots, mid shots, and tracking shots to introduce the characters and setting. Sound effects were added to make the film feel more realistic. Effective shots like two shots and over the shoulder shots helped involve the audience. Mise-en-scene elements like a computer and balloon helped establish realism. The diversity of the actors allowed for broader audience relatability. While the editing could be improved, overall the film achieved the task of including various shots in a one minute conversation film.
1. MEDIA EVALUATION FOR CONVERSATION FILM (SKILLS BASE) LUCY CLAYTON
The task was to produce a short video for approximately 1 minute, including a conversation using some of the shots we
have been learning in class. I feel as if my video achieves the task accordingly.
Within the beginning 10 seconds, the audience will be able to see a range of shots, including an establishing shot, mid
shot and tracking shot, which introduces the character and setting. This is important, because the audience will then be
able to follow along with the video easily and know exactly who the main focus of the video is.
Sound effects were used in appropriate situations, such as the tweeting of birds outside, footsteps, typing on the
computer and the door opening. I feel as if the sound effects made sure the audience felt as if my film was more
realistic, and therefore gave a more exciting video to watch and gave the impression that there was a less amateur
approach towards editing. The music in the background has a smooth beat, enabling the audience to focus on what the
people are saying within the video, rather than listening to loud and potentially unrelated music.
Throughout the video, there were a number of shots that were extremely effective. I found that during the conversation,
the ‘two shot’ worked really well, as even if the two people involved weren’t together, the audience wouldn’t know any
different because of the clever camera work, ensuring the 180 degree rule wasn’t broken, making it look like the two
people were having a conversation. Another shot I found effective was the over the shoulder shot towards the end, as I
felt the audience would become more involved and feel as if they were part of the conversation too, as it looks like they
are watching it next to the person, with the camera as the audience’s eyes.
Mise-en-scene was created by a few objects, such as the computer, however the ‘balloon’ used to show the person
pregnant was the most successful. I thought this was an extremely well-thought-out part of the video, as it added to the
realism of what our whole video was about, making the audience believe what was happening a lot more. This is
important because the audience is the most important part of creating a video; therefore they were taken into account
many times when deciding what we could do to achieve the best possible piece.
The people involved would add to the success of the video if it were to be released into the public, as it shows a
culturally diverse aspect. I thought this was important, because the audience would be able to relate a lot more,
especially if this was shown all around the country/ other countries too. The outfits were chosen suitably, adding to the
‘casual’ and ‘loving’ feel the video portrays, as the 2 people were dressed in informal clothing, as I wanted to create a
relaxed environment, considering the ‘pure’ and ‘innocent’ topic.
At the end of the video, I wanted to create a contrast to the affectionate theme and add a sudden, abrupt ending. This
would encourage the audience to keep watching, as the unexpectedness enables the audience to widen their imagination
and become excited about what’s to come.
The age rating of this video would be aimed at teenagers and young adults, who can appreciate the sense of humour
portrayed throughout the video. I feel as if this video sustains this aim, and people of this age range would enjoy
watching.
I gathered information from my peers in class together with my own views, and the strengths to my video were the
range of shots used. I wanted to include as many different shots as possible, to ‘show off’ the wide variety I had
previously learnt. Weaknesses to my video included lack of consistent scenes, therefore my editing of shots combined
didn’t reach my full potential, as I feel as this could have ‘flown’ a lot better. In contrast to this, I feel as if the video
achieves the task set well and includes a well thought idea too.
