1. PHOTOGRAPHERS
In this PowerPoint, I am going to be looking at
five photographers that are known in the media
community. I have examples of each of the
photographer’s work which allows me to look
at the different styles available for images for
magazines.This will allow me to take
inspiration from these photographs to consider
more variation for my images for my magazine.
2. Rankin
• John RankinWaddell, also known as Rankin is a British portrait
and fashion photographer
• He grew up in Hertfordshire and while he was studying at
Brighton Polytechnic, he decided he was more interested in
photography. He then joined Barnfield College in Luton and later
went to the LondonCollege of Printing. Rankin met Jefferson
Hack in the meantime and after they graduated, they started a
magazine called Dazed and Confuse.
• He has photographed many celebrities such as Kate Moss, Spice
Girls, LilyAllen, Britney Spears, Kevin Spacey, Cate Blanchett,
Queen Elizabeth II,The Rolling Stones, Madonna, Juliette
Binoche, Björ and more.
• He has been awarded an Honary Fellowship by the Royal
Photographic Society.
• As well as taken photos of many well known celebrities, he’s
done campaigns for well known brands such as Coca Cola,
L’Oreal, Nike, Levi’s and many more.
4. Victor
Demarchelier
• Victor Demarchelier is a fashion photographer
• He was born and raised in NewYork City
• He is the youngest son of the well known photographer
Patrick Demarchelier which meantVictor had an interest
in photography and fashion from a young age.
• He studied economics and studio art- mainly focusing on
printmaking- atVassar College and after he graduated in
2006, he was employed by his father and worked daily in
the studio learning about photographic art.
• His work has appeared inVogue,Vogue Paris,Vogue
China,Vogue Japan,Vogue Spain,Vogue Germany,
Vogue Russia,TeenVogue, Bazaar, Interview, Numero
and V.
6. Emma
Summerton
• Originally a painter but is now an established fashion photographer who uses her bold
and colorful knowledge from her artwork to capture alternative images and is describes
as “one of the most talented photographers to emerge in the mid 2000s.”
• Her work is is shown in Italian, American, Japanese and BritishVogue, W and i-D
Magazine
• Originally from Australia and Emma says that the infusion of colours in her images is
inspired by her Australian background.
• She started taking snapshots when she was young and her grandfather was really into
photography and he shot a lot of side film.
• Emma went to the National Art School in Sydney and intended to do painting but chose
photography for her major instead and is unsure why she did so. After graduating, Emma
worked as a photographic assistant for 6 years.
• She moved to London in 1998 and worked as an assistant to the artist Fiona Banner and
sometimes worked with Fiona on photographic projects including shooting images for
Fiona's first book which was released in 2003.
• Emma is a fashion photographer, she always loved fashion and her mother was a
seamstress. Emma would draw first and her mother would make the outfits for her.
• When she went for an interview to assist a photographer towards the end of art school he
asked what magazines Emma looked at and she didn’t look at any at all.Through that
experience,, she learnt that fashion photography is more than she imagined. When
Emma shot forVogue Italia for the first time, she states that “it opened up this world for
me that allowed me to realize that fashion photography could be a creative expression as
well.”
8. Ellen Von
Unwerth
• She is a photographer and director and specializes in
erotic femininity.
• Her work has been publishes inVogue,Vanity Fair,
Interview,The Face, Arena,Twill, L’UomoVogue and I-
D. She has also publishes several books of
photography.
• In 1991 she won first prize at the International Festival
of Fashion Photography.
• She worked as a fashion model for ten years before
becoming a photographer and she now makes fashion,
editorial and advertising photographs.
• Ellen has also directed short films for fashion designers
and music videos for several pop musicians. She has
also directed commercials and web films for the brands
Revlon, Equinox, Clinique and many more.
10. Mert & Marcus
• Mert and Marcus is the working name of two fashion
photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott who work
together on a collaborative basis.
• Their work and style is influenced by the photographer Guy
Bourdin
• Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott met in England in 1994 and
because they’d both been working in the photography
business, they decided to create a team.
• When they first showed the images to the magazine Dazed
and Confused which is a London fashion magazine, their
images immediately made the front cover.
• Known for their portraits of very sophisticated and powerful
women
• “The difference between us and other photographers is that
we care a lot about appearance. We spend most of the tine in
the make-up and hairstyling rooms.” -Mert Alas
• They have worked witch many well known celebrities
including Madonna, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Kylie
Minogue,Victoria Beckham and many more.
