Newman• Arnold Newman was born 3rd March
1918 in New York and died 6th June
2006.
• His field of photography was portrait
photography, news photography and
photography teacher.
• Newman attended the University of
Miami and studies painting and
drawing with an introduction to
Modernism.
• He was unable to afford to continue
after two years so moved to
Philadelphia to work for a studio
making 49-cent portraits.
2. Success as a
Photograph
er• When Newman returned to Florida in 1942, it
was to manage a portrait studio in West Palm
Beach.
• Three years later he opened his own business in
Miami Beach.
• In 1946 Newman went back to New York and
opened Arnold Newman studios and freelanced
for Fortune, Life and Newsweek.
3. Environmental
Photography
• Newman is also credited for being the first to use
environmental-portraiture. He normally captured people
in their most familiar settings with representative objects
to show their professions and personalities.
• For example a musician may have been photographed in
their studio or on stage. A politician may be
photographed in front of a representative building.
• “I didn’t just want to make a photography with some
things in the background. The surroundings have to add
to the composition and the understanding of the person.
No matter who the subject was, it had to be an
interesting photograph. Just to simply do a portrait of a
famous person doesn’t mean anything.”

7. Awards
• In 1999 Newman won the award for
Master of Photography at the International
Centre of Photography in Manhattan.
• And in 2004, Newman also won a Lucie
award for Outstanding Achievement of
Portrait Photography. This was part of the
International Photography Awards
program, in Los Angeles, California.
