1. La La Land
In the summer of 2017, I watched the film of La La Land after hearing the positive and overwhelming
reviews of the film. In the opening sequence, I was completely and utterly captivated by it. I have
worked on filming before in my Media A Level filming a music video which took weeks to complete
and I was amazed how in the opening sequence it was all filmed in one shot. Every detail in the film
was clearly well thought about and this was shown in the final product. Ryan Gosling has always
been one of my favourite actors and I absolutely loved his performance with Emma Stone due to his
ultimate skill to evoke emotion in the audience. The soundtrack for the film along with the costumes
worked incredibly well with the narrative. The main song in the film that stood out to me was the
'City of Stars' which was also sung by Ryan Gosling and by having the actor sing one of the most
significant songs of the entire film, it made La La Land a striking and memorable product. The only
part of the film I would've changed would of been the ending as myself as an audience member
expected Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone to be together at the end. However, the element of
surprise in this ending is also an attribute I loved due to the fact most endings in films are fairly
predictable so it was interesting how La La Land did not follow this convention which made the film
even more memorable to me. La La Land is clearly 'something wonderful' (quote from the 'City of
Stars') due to the compelling performance.
