2. Mind Map 1: Magazine Ideas
Age Group/Target Audience
I will aim the video game
magazine towards people
between the ages of 18-25 as
that is the biggest
demographics of video game
players, therefore by aiming it
at this demographic my product
would be more likely to sell
better than if I aimed it at 10-
16 year olds.
Colour Scheme
When looking at this range of
video game magazines I can see
that the colour schemes on
more modern poster have
become darker compared the
retro magazines. Therefore if I
wanted to design a modern
magazine I would have to use a
dark colour scheme. I have
decided to use this bleak colour
scheme as it will appeal to the
modern video game industry.
Style
On all of these magazine the main
characters of the game the
magazine is focusing on are always
front and centre, therefore when I
design my poster I will need to
make sure the character is front
and centre, to attract the
consumer.
Genres
When looking at these video game
comics I can see they all focus on a
different genre of video game,
some focus on games that have
already been released and others
focus more on up and coming
games, therefore if I make a video
game magazine cover I will need
to decide whether to focus on up
and coming games or already
existing ones.
3. Mind Map 2: Video Game Poster
Age Group
I will aim the video game
poster towards people
between the ages of 18-
25 as that is the biggest
demographics of video
game players, therefore
by aiming it at this
demographic my product
would be more likely to
sell better than if I aimed
it at 10-16 year olds.
Genres
• Action
• Adventure
• Survival
• Horror
• Mystery
• Puzzle
• Sport
• Role Playing
• First Person Shooter
• Massive Multiplayer Online
• Simulation
• Virtual Reality
Poster Ideas
From looking at a variation of
video game posters I have noticed
the main character is always front
and center, usually with one side
of the character covered in a
bright colour and another in a dark
colour. I think this is like a
foreshadow for what’s to come,
for example in most Uncharted 4
posters the main character Nathan
is getting old, and has retired from
his adventuring days, yet his dead
brother comes back alive and
needs Nathan’s help. This leads to
Nathan fighting with himself and
his wife Elena as last time went
looking for a lost artifact they both
almost died. Therefore the colour
split is showing the fight going on
in Nathans head.
Colour Scheme
I have decided to make my poster look quite
modern, for the modern video game industry
instead of doing a retro poster. In a lot of
modern posters the colour scheme is quite
bleak, grey, red and black are mostly used for
Action, Adventure, FPS, RPG and MMO games.
Poster designers do this to show that the
character you you play in the game, the
character you make, is the person to save the
world. This pulls players and draws them to the
game because who doesn’t love saving the
world?
4. Mind Map 3: Video/Audio Review
• Ideas
• Trailer
• Review
• Gameplay Summary
In the trailer I could get a collection of intriguing clips of the game, anything to peak the viewers
interest. I would also have to pick certain tracks from the games soundtrack to go with the
trailer.
In a review video I would break down my review into certain categories, I would then also gather
certain clips to match with what I would be talking about, I would also use the game’s sound
track with this as I would also be reviewing it.
A gameplay summary is much like a review, although it misses certain parts of the story and only
focuses on the actual gameplay. E.g. how the controls are, if it runs smoothly and so on.
5. Mind Map:
Magazine
and video
Magazine
• Rime Review – Talk about all the game’s themes, characters, aesthetic and soundtrack
• Front cover – background image of Rime
• Context – advertise other games that are of the same genre – Include a spoiler warning over
Rime section
• Double page – review page
• Colour scheme – stick to the games colour scheme – light blues and anything from dark grey
to white
Video
• Rime Trailer
• Record gameplay clips on PS4 – clips highlighting certain parts of the game – soundtrack
needed ( find on YouTube )
• Premier Pro – use for editing clips
Inside of the magazine
• Different image of the game on each page – Stick with the game’s colour scheme – Find
review quotes from the internet to go on the double page
7. Mood Board Analysis
Is there any repetition in the images you have collected? Repeated
colours/images styles/fonts/tone/mood
• In my mood board all the images are different, therefore there isn’t any repetition,
however all the images are from the same game. I decided to gather all my images
from the same game because I am doing my FMP off of this game, therefore I can
always come back and look at the colour schemes. Within the images there is a
wide mixture of different colour schemes, for example some of the images have a
very light tone where as others appear more dark. The tone from the images varies
with the colours.
How will your mood board influence your final product?
• My mood board will influence my final product quite heavily as I will be sticking
with the games colour schemes for my magazine.
8. Informal Proposal
Current Idea
Concept My ideas are to make a magazine with a review of the game Rime, I am also thinking
of making a trailer for the game.
Type of
products you
would make
• I will be making a magazine for a review on the video game Rime, within that
magazine I will be making a front cover, context page and a double page with the
games review. I will also be making a trailer for the game to accompany the
review.
What you will
need to make
them
I will need Photoshop and Premier Pro to make my products
Audience I will aim the video game poster towards people between the ages of 18-25 as that is
the biggest demographics of video game players, therefore by aiming it at this
demographic my product would be more likely to sell better than if I aimed it at 10-
16 year olds.
9. Choices
Discounted ideas Reasons for not choosing this
project
• Video Review
• Poster
• I decided not to make a video review as I
wanted to make a magazine review
instead a long with a trailer as I think this
shows my creativity more
• I decided not to make a poster as I think
a magazine and a trailer is a better
pairing, rather than a magazine and a
poster.
